Strawberries, weddings, and bugs.

Hi, friends. πŸ™‚
Taper week is once again upon us.
This weekend was a busy one! On Friday, I met with a new client to discuss details about a photo gig. I’ll post more once I have everything set in stone- but here’s a preview of my new subjects…

Brian and I wanted to celebrate my newest gig opportunity, so we went to Matsu Ya. I love sushi!

We headed out to New London Friday night. Since our Saturday wedding was in the Fox Cities, we took the pups to my mother-in-law’s to run to their heart’s content! Abbie has recently taken up sleeping on our shoes. Brian’s nasty work boots and my well-worn Chacos?

Brian woke up early with me and we went for a little run on Saturday morning. My hamstrings have been incredibly painfully tight for the last few days. I was hoping a short run and good stretch would help.

(For the record, it only helped a little bit. I’m currently trying not to panic.)

On the way to the salon, my car rolled across the big 140,000.

I made my last car payment this month, too… So that probably means my car is going to start falling apart. :-/
We had a wonderfully warm and sunny day for Katie and Ryan’s wedding. πŸ™‚ Here’s a quick recap of the day through our lenses…

Congratulations, Katie and Ryan! We had so much fun with you!
Sunday brought an amazing day. We went to Appleton to go to church at Appleton Alliance with Jean, then we ran some errands. I got some pink and lime green maribou! I’ve got some flies that are just waiting to be tied with that pretty stuff. I also picked up a book for small group- Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. After errands, we went strawberry picking! I haven’t been berry picking in 10 years or so. The last time I went, my mom and I made a storyboard from berry picking through cleaning and making strawberry jam. I kept thinking about how fun it was! We went to a place near Appleton that Brian’s family has been going for years- and I found Todd!

I didn’t know he worked there. What an awesome surprise! His fiancΓ©e, Hannah, works there, too. πŸ™‚ Here is our berry picking extravaganza…

“Strawberry fields forever…”

Thanks, Cuff Farms… We were the last people out picking for the afternoon. πŸ™‚
Packing up the car was quite an extravaganza- with all of our photo gear, overnight bags, and the dogs… Our trunk was packed to the gills!

20120612-150006.jpg
We also discovered that we must have been driving through some pretty buggy areas- my rack is covered!!

20120612-150036.jpg
Monday brought unpacking, photo editing (SO MANY PHOTOS!), and processing some of those berries. I made my first ever batch of strawberry jam by myself!

20120612-150128.jpg
I wasn’t sure if it would turn out because I didn’t use as much sugar as the recipe calls for- but it’s perfect. Seriously delicious! πŸ™‚ I’m so proud. I didn’t know that when you can anything, the jars make little popping sounds when they seal! How cute. πŸ™‚
I’m off to finish some photos before Brian comes home. I’m planning on logging a few miles tonight in the cooler weather. πŸ™‚

Miles this year: 333.5

P.S. Here’s something to think about.

Three words: fly. fishing. school.

I had the most amazing weekend!
On Friday afternoon, Brian and I hopped on our bikes to take Abbie out for a run. It was pretty warm outside, but we knew we wouldn’t be around as much this weekend, and we wanted her to get some exercise. We took her for a few miles, but when she started panting pretty hard, I scooped her up and put her in my basket.

She’s way too cute. πŸ™‚
After our bike ride, we loaded our boats and headed over to lake Emily for a quick paddle. The weather was beautiful!

We paddled in, loaded up, and tossed on a second layer just in time to start the main weekend event: Fly Fishing School!!
We started on Friday night with knot tying. I learned the surgeon’s knot and loop, blood knot, cinch and improved cinch knot, and the handshake.

After a bunch of time with knots and some great stories, we headed home.
I woke up early on Saturday to go for a run with two strangers. Well, technically, they weren’t total strangers… I met them through my friend, Sarah Cooke. She graduated on Saturday (congratulations, girl!), and her family came to witness and celebrate her accomplishment. Enter the Cooke brothers- Andrew and Morgan. I took them out on the Green Circle for a relaxed 4.5 miler before school. Thanks for the run, guys! It was great to meet up in real life! πŸ™‚

I made it home with exactly enough time to shower and head out to day two of fly fishing school. Brian may have shut my brand new rod in the door and broke both pieces. I may have cried on the way to school. I may have made him tell everyone what happened to the rod they gave me.
We learned about the gear…

20120520-185926.jpg
Watched some fancy casting…

20120520-185949.jpg
And learned to cast on our own!

20120520-190009.jpg
I was having a lot of fun πŸ™‚

20120520-190028.jpg
The school is held at the Riverside Bible Camp, along the Tomorrow River in Amherst. It is a BEAUTIFUL location!

20120520-190113.jpg
There was lots of wildlife, too!

20120520-190137.jpg
They cooked us delicious meals (burgers, pasta, pizza, breakfast sandwiches, cinnamon rolls, lots of fruit…), and after dinner, we started fly tying. I forgot to take photos of my flies, but you bet your bottom dollar that mine have fancy pink tails, glittery bodies, and silvery segments. πŸ™‚ I made up my own patterns with colors that I’m sure will grab the little fishes’ attention.

20120520-190521.jpg
After a bonfire and the drive home, Brian and I crashed pretty hard. I peeled myself out of bed this morning, tired but very excited to actually go fishing today!
I ate breakfast at school, then did a half hour of yoga on the footbridge that crosses the river. It was a great practice the morning- I had fresh air blowing in my hair and the sound of running water in my ears. As soon as I rolled up my mat, we started a session that covers what TU does as far as stream restoration.

20120520-191327.jpg
We followed the work project discussion with casting review and a few casting games.

20120520-191451.jpg
I made a cameo in Brian’s sunglasses!

20120520-191514.jpg
After lunch (with WATERMELON!!!), we got everyone together…

20120520-191610.jpg
…then split up into fishing groups. Brian and I went with Wyatt to these secret little ponds, and I caught my first brook trout!

20120520-191658.jpg
I didn’t want to touch him, he was so beautiful with these pink and orange polka dots and a pretty sorbet orange tummy. Don’t worry, I caught two more! They were practically little babies, but I didn’t care. They’re soooooo cute!

20120520-191753.jpg
Wyatt stayed out with Brian and I for a few hours.

20120520-191818.jpg
Special thanks to Wyatt for helping me with everything- from tying on my fly to untangling my line to helping me cast in the wind to correcting my casting form to taking the hook out of the cute fishes’ mouths.

20120520-191922.jpg
We came home, searched for ticks, played with our pups, showered… And now I’m back to normal Heidi life, with a giant salad and Burn Notice.

20120520-192017.jpg
We even stopped at Cellar 70 on the way home and picked up some Two Hearted to celebrate our accomplishments today!

20120520-192108.jpg
Look at the little brookies on that case! πŸ™‚
Brian is already snoring on the couch, so I better get us ready for bed.
Thanks, Frank Hornberg chapter guys- you’re a group of amazing men and I’m so blessed that you’re sharing your knowledge and experience with me!
Watch out, world… I’m a superb fly fisher-woman in the making! πŸ™‚
