Coming home: Wisconsin Summer

I love coming home from a trip- I am so thankful for my husband, and my home, and my own bed… and of course, my little pup.

With that said, I apologize for the next few posts, as they’re a little behind schedule. πŸ™‚

My first morning home, I had lots of work to catch up on, including errands. I hooked Abbie up, laced up my running shoes, and ran to the post office and the bank. I even ran through the “drive through” at the bank, since I can’t take Abbie inside, and when the tube came back through the little vacuum thing, there was a biscuit inside!

She sure earned it, as she did a great job as District 4 Alderdog and welcomed everyone we saw on the run. Thanks, Chase!

This is random, but we picked up some sweet corn, and I just LOVED this middle cob. Why have straight lines, when you can be crazy? πŸ™‚

I was able to squeeze in an engagement photo shoot with Brigitta and Stryder. They’re such a neat couple, and we were so excited to work with them!

We had gorgeous weather, and we went for a little walk on the Green Circle. Lovely!

It is so hard going on vacation during the middle of wedding season, and I have so much to try and catch up on. This year was even crazier, as I am also staying very active as a new alderwoman, and trying to learn as much as I can from everyone around me. This brings me to Bob. Meet Bob!

Bob runs Poky Pedaling, a totally free group of organized bicycle rides around our community. He’s an active advocate for pedestrian and bicycle safety, so I had my meeting with him on our bikes, and we rode around the city. Thanks for sharing your thoughts during our “mobile meeting,” Bob!

I made it home in time to help stack some wood near our shed, and I amazed at this piece that I found…

Bark beetles do some beautiful work. Art by bugs. They must have been incredibly busy before the bark fell off, revealing this masterpiece. πŸ™‚

We worked up quite an appetite working in the yard, and we were more than happy to have dinner with Brian’s family, at Dale and Sheri’s house.

Fish fry, jalepeno poppers, french fries… yes, we’re spoiled.

It was really awesome. I sure love these people!

We got home late Friday night, and I was exhausted, but I climbed out of the covers just early enough to run the Violet Thompson 5K, a fundraiser for a very special little girl in town. I had no idea if I’d know anyone there, but sure enough, I found George and Marc around mile 1.5. πŸ™‚

I’ll leave you all with a few photos from paddling out on the chain. I just can’t get enough of my SUP and Marl Lake.

I made us SUP hatch-friendly blackberry mojitos. I muddled the rum and mint and berries before we left, and the rest is a delicious memory. We know how to spend a day on the water. πŸ™‚

So many more shoots to share with you- it will be an engagement and wedding explosion here for a while!

Two Days At Home = Cramming Summer Fun

After those dusty, hot Lifest days, we recovered with a dip in the Chain of Lakes in Waupaca.

One of the things that I love the most about those Wisconsin lakes is how turquoise/blue they are.

My friendΒ (and our occasional intern)Β Chris Pruitt, took that photo of my little brookie going for a swim. πŸ™‚ Marl lakes are awesome because the high mineral content of the soil binds extra nutrients, inhibiting the growth of algae. The white muddy bottom also reflects the water in a unique way!

We played with my SUP and Brian’s kayak until we were completely exhausted. I love long summer nights.

Looking at those photos just reminds me how spoiled I am… Brian built me that wooden SUP and it is absolutely gorgeous- it tracks straight and looks great!

Obviously, we crashed hard on Sunday night, and I woke bright and early for a shoot with these beautiful Collectivo coffee beans. I look at this image and I can practically smell the aroma… I think I’m doing something right. πŸ™‚ Product photography of consumables is supposed to make your mouth water!

Smelling, drinking, and agonizing over the details of those beans woke me up so I could head over to the KI Mobility ground breaking at their new location. It is so exciting to see a local business growing as quickly as these guys have- and they build some amazing products!

I haven’t been to many groundbreakings, so it was pretty exciting! The mayor, city staff, and other alderpersons all had the opportunity to participate- I’ve never done that before! Put on a hard hat, and use a golden shovel to scoop some dirt? If only all construction was like that. πŸ˜‰

A little yoga, a little running, and a lot of laundry…

…then I was packing to head off for another adventure, as a counselor at the Wisconsin Trout Unlimited Youth Fishing Camp.

Cupcakes + New Phones + Mother’s Day

I really do love being busy, especially because it means I get to eat lots of delicious treats to refuel.

Take this olive oil. fig, and pistachio cupcake, for example.

It was every bit as delicious as it looks. Food photography is the best. πŸ™‚ That cupcake is from the Main Grain Bakery.

I’m super excited to announce that we have FINALLY ditched Sprint. After fighting with them over connection and coverage issues, and being issued several new phones, then losing data in my office and home, and spending hours with customer service, we finally just decided to ditch them before our contract is over. We happily switched to AT&T, and we went to Best Buy to do it. These two guys just made our day… we had great service, and now we both proudly use the iPhone 6. Yippee!

We celebrated Mother’s Day with brunch (for dinner) for our moms, but I spent some extra time with Abbie for the morning. Since we don’t have kids, she’s the closest thing to a baby that I have, and I sure do appreciate her. ❀

We took a little field trip over to the Hines/Bellile family’s home to do an extended family photo shoot. They all came in by car and plane to spend Mother’s Day with their grandparents. Look at this crew!

After a long weekend, I recouped for the week by heading up to Wausau for my best friend, Amy, and her wedding hair and makeup trial run. πŸ™‚

Life has sure been busy.

I’m starting to learn that being busy is just a state that we all know as adulthood.  I keep thinking things will slow down, but they don’t! πŸ™‚ I did take a very brief break after the race, but it didn’t last!

While I’ve been out on adventures, here is what you missed:

-An Earth Day presentation. Matt, my TU chapter president, and I, made a PowerPoint to share what TU does in our community. The Jensen Center was packed with friends of water in our area. πŸ™‚   

   -I ran up to Wausau and did a few headshots and event photos from an oral health presentation sponsored by Fehrman Orthodontics.  

   -I cooked a killer batch of fajitas. They were pretty, too…  -I religiously went to yoga at Community Soul.   

 -And last, but not least, Brian and I celebrated my one-week-post-marathon anniversary by running a little five mile race in New London. It’s called the Sturgeon Shuffle, and the course runs along the Wolf River while the sturgeon are typically spawning.  It was a great race, though my legs were feeling pretty tired near the end. Marathon recovery is no joke! I do love running along the water, and this course is an out-and-back, with a two mile option. It starts and ends at the school, runs through a little park, then the rest of the course follows the river. I loved that part of it. Brian was a trooper and stuck with me through the whole thing, even though I felt like I was running excruciatingly slow. Post-marathon muscle fatigue is such a weird and very real thing. It was a relatively small race, with chilly and windy weather, and it was well organized. They had bananas and delicious cookies at the finish, so I was obviously pretty excited for that! We finished and warmed up inside the school until it was time for awards.

Brian placed 2nd in his age group. I got 3rd in mine, and we both came home with these fabulous mugs as awards.   

 I’ve been traveling all over the place, shooting places, people, and projects… and I can’t wait to sit still long enough to share them all with you!

Easter + a week on the road

I love Easter! We celebrated Easter this year with friends from our church, and I brought deviled eggs. 

I love deviled eggs, though I always feel a little weird bringing something with the word “devil” right in the name to a celebration about Jesus. πŸ˜‰

We tried to go easy on the Easter candy at home, but there is a seemingly unlimited supply of seasonal candy at the PT clinic. Oh, gummy candy… I burned off all that gummy candy with a super windy and hilly nine miles with Lydia on the Wau-king trail.  We refueled with beer at Chain Bar, and I headed home to pack for a crazy week.I had such a busy day- when Brian got home, we headed up to Wausau for a ballroom dance lesson with our first dance teachers, Missy and Jeff! We hadn’t seen them since they taught us to dance before our wedding. Eight years was too long! Of course, I was too excited to see them and I forgot to take a picture, but after our lesson, we headed over to the election headquarters for our alderman Mike Wiza, and we were present when they called the vote, making Mike our new Stevens Point mayor! Congratulations, Mike. πŸ™‚Brian and I spent the week in the Valley, while he was at a training for work. It was pretty cool for me- since most of my work is portable, I can work from anywhere. I was able to catch up on some photo work, make all the games for Amy’s upcoming bridal shower, and shoot a gorgeous pastry (with the cutest edible orchid!) from SAP Brunch in Appleton.On our last morning at the hotel, we went out for breakfast at this fabulous cafe- Molly’s. They had sweet potato hash browns! Made. My. Day. I loved the treadmill at the hotel, so I headed back to our room, changed, and logged a few miles in the hotel gym. After a quick shower, we packed up and headed down to Chicago to celebrate my great aunt Eileen’s 75th anniversary of being an active member of the ancient order of Hibernians. It was a beautiful party where I got to see a lot of my family, including my brother and his family. Happy National Sibling Day! We caught up with everyone and danced until we dropped! It’s fun to visit my Hoffman side, because I’m the short one among those cousins, and I’m 5’8″! πŸ™‚

We spent the night at my aunt Maureen’s house and took care of Percy. I think she was upset that she wasn’t invited to the party. She wouldn’t smile for me! πŸ™‚ We left very early on Saturday morning to head up to Wausau for Amy’s bridal shower! My car celebrated a little palindrome milestone of her own somewhere in northern Illinois…We stopped at home for a whirlwind half hour- showered, changed, styled my hair, brewed some iced tea, boxed up the shortbreads, made simple syrup, then packed it all up in a cooler and took it to the Hirn home for Amy’s bridal shower. Becky, Brooke, and I planned this adorable tea-themed shower, and it turned out beautifully!

Tulips + Stewardship + Lemongrass Noodle House

Hello, spring!

  

The first few warm days always seem to draw attention to the salt that is caked on to my car. It amazes me that cars can survive multiple winters and humid summers and sun beating down and layers of ice. I planned to get out to fish early season, but wanted to swing by the car wash first. Of course, every other person in Wisconsin had the same idea, so the lines were long. Luckily for me, I had my briefcase in the car, so I pulled out my laptop and spent my 45 minute wait writing my column for Wisconsin Trout. Before I knew it, I was enjoying the abstract art on my windshield. A short drive later, and I was out on the river. 

That’s my home water, the Tomorrow River. There’s something so special about going out for the first time after a long winter… I love watching the changes that happened while I was “gone.” I didn’t catch anything, but to be totally honest, I was mostly just checking things out. πŸ™‚

That healing time on the water was good for my soul, and my next photo shoot was good for my tummy! I headed over to the new Thai restaurant in town, Lemon Grass Noodle House. They’re known for their egg rolls, but all the food was delicious. They were so sweet to me, and they packed up all the food after the shoot for me to take home for dinner. They even included a bottle of that orange-y drink… I think it’s called Thai tea. It was kind of like a spiced iced tea with milk and sugar.

   

  

   Thank you for your hospitality, Lemon Grass Noodle House! We’re happy to have you join the downtown businesses. πŸ™‚

I burned off those extra calories by meeting Carmel up in Wausau and running up and back down Rib Mountain. With Wisconsin’s governor’s budget, stewardship funding is drastically cut. Being a lover of the outdoors, I take advantage of many benefits from stewardship, and the trail up the mountain is one of them. It breaks my heart to watch our governor attack so many things I care deeply about. I’ll post soon about the politically-motivated actions that I’ve taken this spring.

Kasha salon + food + Chicago

I’ve spent a lot of time in salons. Almost every wedding morning, I’m skipping through a salon, camera in hand, with blushing brides and excited bridesmaids. This time, I was invited to Kasha Salon, in Wausau, for new promotional photos. This is Stef. She’s an absolutely stunning woman (seriously, those eyes!), with a sweet personality and a powerful creative streak. I met her on dance team back in my high school days, and it was really fun to reconnect with her over a couple shared brides as clients. The salon is beautiful, and filled with fabulous products!  Thanks for bringing me in, Kasha staff! It was a pleasure working with you all!  I had a busy week, but was able to steal away for a Skype coffee date with my first sole sister, Nancy.  Nancy moved to warmer climes last year, so we’ve only been able to keep up our dates virtually. πŸ™‚ I hope to get out to the Vegas area to visit her soon!

I had lots of food in the studio this week. I am absolutely in love with these lavender lemon shortbreads.

  Of course, I ate them as soon as I was done, and I washed it down with my newest favorite food- bug macaroni and cheese!!  As a fly angler, I have a special appreciation for all things buggy. πŸ™‚

Keeping with the lemon theme, I worked on some stock photography of translucent fruit…

 …and I finished off the work week with a beautifully rich French Napoleon from Andersonville’s Swedish Bakery.

 I spent Saturday at TroutFest, a TU event. I had a booth for the women’s initiative, and I also had blank trout outlines for kids to color. My booth was right along the window, so I kept my eye out on the water- as the ice melts, the eagles come out.

     

  I hurried home on Saturday night, and packed for Sunday… the highlight of my weekend was a trip to Chicago with this little love… …my niece, Ember! ❀ My sister, Erin, and I had a chance to catch up, and I spent a little time down in Chicago, including lunch with my cousin, Max.  A whirlwind week, filled with my favorite things. With spring around the corner, spirits are high!
