Meetings, so many meetings.

Part of my new job with TU involves traveling to regional meetings, meeting our members, and having some really awesome discussions about getting women involved and active in TU. Here’s a few of my favorite memories so far:
Reno.
I bought a new luggage tag, ran into friends in Madison before I flew out, and flew into an airport with cutthroat trout in the tile floor. I ran by myself and also with my friend, Steve Moyer, in terrifying interesting areas, with power poles in the middle of the sidewalk, along the Truckee river, stayed in a big hotel/casino/spa/resort (The Atlantis), drank some weird things at a hipster bar, and gambled for the first time.

I loved an early taste of spring. I ran downtown, did yoga in the grass, ate a Moonpie and drank a Nehi soda, and bought cowboy boots. I listened to a bluegrass band, ate grits, met a ton of great people, and sat in meetings at a really cool venue- The Dillard House.

I learned about stream restoration techniques, talked with members about engaging our women volunteers, fished with my friend, Pete, and his pup, Teak. I hung out with nerdy staff (Brennan!), bonded with some of my favorite Wisconsin TU people, and came home to a crazy snowstorm.

I stayed at the Garland Resort, ran on golf courses, met some incredible female leaders (and men, too!) within TU, hung out with my WITU guys, and got closer with our TU staff. I went to a fly fishing historical museum, and found some Weber reels made here, in Stevens Point! I caught my first Michigan fish, and was welcomed home to Wisconsin with a view of the Capitol from the plane and a hot cup of coffee.

How to appropriately heal from a stress fracture…

Fall is typically my favorite season for running. The cool weather is easier to tolerate, there’s lots of races, and beautiful scenery. I was able to log some beautiful miles while tapering for Madison Marathon.

20140123-103355.jpg

20140123-103440.jpg
Running with friends always makes the miles fly by. It’s easy to talk myself out of running if I am not feeling it, but I will never stand someone up for a planned run. Thanks for the miles, Mike!

20140123-103550.jpg
I had lunch dates with some of my favorite people… Nancy and Rickopedia…

20140123-103652.jpg
…and talked shop with Bill. 🙂

20140123-103722.jpg
I had a shoot over at the School of Performing Arts… little kids with tiny violins are the cutest.

20140123-103805.jpg

20140123-103811.jpg

20140123-103816.jpg

20140123-103821.jpg
I love shoots that are related to music. The owners of this music school are colleagues of mine from my college days.
If you’re a new reader, you might be starting to get the idea that I have widely varying interests and activities. You are so right! To fill up some of my “free time,” I auditioned for and got a spot in the musical White Christmas, so I had some tap dance rehearsals. This was a really fun group of people to work with, and it was great to show Brian that yes, I actually know how to tap dance.
Really.
I’ll post pictures from the show soon! 🙂
That busy schedule distracted me from the predictable taper crazies, and before I knew it, it was time to race. You can read my recap here, including Santa hydrating me at mile 23 and some of my favorite signs from the race course.
I finished the race in the morning, ate a ton of frozen yogurt, slept in the car on the way home, and headed straight to teach ballroom. I had tap dance rehearsal on Monday and Tuesday, and I was still feeling pretty sore, especially in my left foot. On Wednesday, I took Abbie for a walk in my house slippers, since my foot was still hurting. I was hoping my body just needed a good shakeout run and a stretch, so on Thursday morning, I laced up my shoes and took Abbie out to the river. As soon as I tied the bow on my left shoe, there was some serious pain. I was hoping it wasn’t anything too bad, and left anyway. Abbie was so happy to get out of the house… she is a typically active Jack Russell, and she doesn’t care if I’m resting post-marathon or not. She needs her exercise! 🙂

20140123-104803.jpg

20140123-104829.jpg
To my dismay, I only made it out about a mile before I realized that something was seriously wrong with my foot. Two miles logged for the day, and worry creeped into my normally optimistic brain. I took my shoe off, but the pain remained, and seemed to resonate through my ankle, foot, and calf.
I called my doctor, hoping for a cancellation so I could get in, but there wasn’t anything available. I did what any insane runner would do- I went to urgent care. The pain wasn’t urgent, but my mental state was.

20140123-105346.jpg
They did an X-ray, but educated me that they usually can’t tell a stress fracture immediately on an X-ray, that it takes a couple weeks to show up. They did recommend that I see my regular doctor, and she recommended that I see an orthopedic specialist. And she gave me a special kind of shoe that didn’t hurt to be on my foot.

20140123-105315.jpg
The orthopedic doctor appointment wasn’t for a few days, and I was ordered to rest. So I crocheted a scarf. 🙂

20140123-105449.jpg

20140123-105516.jpg
When I finally made it in to see the specialist, he pushed and prodded all the spots that hurt me. He thought that I had a stress fracture in one of the “chunky” bones in my ankle, and some irritated and inflamed nerves in my foot. He said that he could order a bone scan to be sure, but that his treatment recommendations would be the same, so I opted to save the money, and headed straight to physical therapy. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, do not run. And wear this big walking boot all the time.

20140123-105826.jpg
Please enjoy this montage of my foot situation for the past 8 weeks.

20140123-110005.jpg

20140123-110017.jpg

20140123-110035.jpg
There was a small lapse in judgement, where I decided to still tap dance in the show. Turns out, tap dancing will prolong the healing of a stress fracture. It’s okay, I was wearing some of my favorite compression socks while doing it…

20140123-110329.jpg

20140123-110334.jpg
…and basically tried to rest. It’s hard to be such a busy, active girl with this boot, but I tried to make the most of it. 🙂
I hung out with friends and made Möbius strips.

20140123-110819.jpg
Went to coffee with Stef, and celebrated the liberation of my curly bangs…

20140123-111032.jpg

Visited my mom and grammie…

Witnessed the engagement of two of our good friends, Amanda and Andy!!!!

20140123-111346.jpg

20140123-111359.jpg
Had my mind blown about a Trout Museum that wasn’t…

20140123-111454.jpg
Went shopping with the Benishek ladies and my momma for hunter window weekend…

20140123-111957.jpg
Bought a hat with ears…

20140123-112048.jpg
…and taught some adorable little girls how to make scarves, too!

20140123-112126.jpg
If I’ve learned anything through this process, it’s that I need to be more patient. Healing takes time!
Up next? Thanksgiving, Black Friday shopping, a bunch of photo shoots, and photos from White Christmas. Thanks, friends 🙂

Newsboys. Visiting Michigan. Running!

That wonderful, warm Florida weather made for quite an adjustment to Wisconsin fall. Luckily, I had a shoot with Lem and Tracy over in Green Bay… Newsboys, and their tour entourage.

In concert photography, I never forget about the sound guy. They can make or break a show…
20140121-105507.jpg20140121-105512.jpg
Aww, Duncan. Great drummer, and often makes me giggle. Funny guy!
I don’t shoot a lot of concerts, and every time I do, I fall in love with the saturated colors.
I got home a little late from Green Bay, and fell sound asleep. All that travel was wearing me out! Of course, that didn’t stop me from waking up early, repacking my suitcase, and heading to Michigan with Brian for the weekend. We went to visit my aunt, Maureen, and her family at their country home in Bloomingdale.
20140121-110117.jpg
Can you tell we’re related? 🙂
It was a beautiful weekend, and I was able to get in a few miles on the Kal-Haven trail. It was beautiful!!

20140121-110624.jpg

20140121-110709.jpg
It was an amazingly relaxing weekend filled with family, running, eating good food, and playing with a puppy. Who could ask for more? The seven hour drive home concluded just in time for me to get to dance lessons.

Stay tuned for the extremely exciting story of how a busy girl copes with a stress fracture…

Fall during winter.

I love blogging about fall’s stunning colors while looking out my window at softly falling snow. Reliving different seasons through photos is a pretty fun part of my job. Without further adieu, here are a few cute photos from Jace’s one year photo shoot.

Beer, fish, cold water, apple pie, and Megan and Jim :)

Hey, friends.
Last month, B and I headed over to Pigeon River Brewing Co with our friends, Mary and Joe. They were featured in the last Hoopla magazine.

20131206-113026.jpg
It’s a small brewery in Marion, Wi, run by a couple guys and their families.

20131206-113202.jpg
I’m always happy to see small, local businesses growing. Farmers turned brewers? Awesome. They’ve still got the bulk tank out back!
We got back from that midweek trip just in time for me to pack to head down to the Trout Unlimited annual meeting. This year, it was held down in Middleton, so I was able to drive there easily! I was asked to present about Stream Girls.
Chris Wood gave the state of TU address, filling us all in on what’s happened in the past year.

20131206-113651.jpg
My friend, Jon Christiansen, also gave his presentation, as chairman of the board.

20131206-113724.jpg
The Administrator of the EPA, Gina McCarthy, gave a very interesting presentation. I’d never taken photos at an event with Secret Service before!

20131206-113841.jpg

20131206-113848.jpg
As always, there was fly tying, and an awards ceremony. 🙂

20131206-113917.jpg

20131206-113923.jpg
As if it’s any surprise, I made a lot of new friends and got to visit with some that I hadn’t seen in a while! Have I mentioned that I love the company of fishermen and fisherwomen? I even got to sneak out early for a little run with Franklin.

20131206-114024.jpg

20131206-114053.jpg
I am happy to be a part of this organization!
Fall makes me want to bake and cuddle in with sweaters and soup! I picked up some beautiful apples and made a pie. 🙂 there is just something about homemade crust!

Abbie almost had a taste! 🙂 darn cute dog.
A beautiful Sunday morning arrived, perfect for Megan and Jim’s engagement session.

20131206-114602.jpg
I’ve known Megan since junior high- we played in band together! 🙂

Love these two! Jim just became a marathoner at the Fox Cities marathon in September. 🙂 They fit together so perfectly, and they just made my job easy… Their love for each other shines through in these photos. We can’t wait until your May wedding, friends!
Sunday night was teaching ballroom dance lessons with Dale. I had a cold, so I was kind of crabby. Dale recommended that I supplement with Vitamin B… Vitamin BEAR!

20131206-114945.jpg

20131206-115002.jpg

20131206-115029.jpg
It worked, and I made it through my group lessons. Don’t worry, I gave hand sanitizer to my students and used it myself! 🙂
More to come. Oh, so much more, but I’m heading out to brave the cold for a beautiful winter photo session!

I’m skipping ahead chronologically because I want to tell you all about the fun that was the Madison Marathon this year.
When the marathon organizers changed the date from May to November, I was a little nervous about the cold, and I was right to be. Race morning, it was in the 30s, with a slight wind. The race starts and ends at the capital, which is exciting , but presents some problems… the first 1/2 mile is downhill (so people go too fast) and the last 1/2 mile is uphill, so you’re spending your last bit of energy struggling up a hill! Good thing we stopped for coffee before the race. That cup of steaming liquid magic got me through the wait for the gun to go off!

I started with the selfies around the first mile 🙂

I tried to catch photos that show how hilly the course was…

Here is my sexy shadow self, somewhere around mile 10, next to a stranger in a hat.

There is a big hill around mile 17, and once you make it to the top, there is a beautiful view!

How about this sign?

20131114-134830.jpg
I know that some of you think I’m crazy for taking photos and tweeting while running, but here is proof that I’m not the only one…

20131114-135227.jpg
I loved this little kid and I definitely touched that sign. You betcha.

20131114-135316.jpg
Around mile 18, I started to feel a little jello-y in my legs, but nothing too serious. I felt like Gumby!

20131114-140457.jpg
Brian was waiting for me right around mile 19, and caught me midfueling… Swedish fish FTW.

20131114-135821.jpg

20131114-135830.jpg
The course had a little loop, so I saw him again around mile 20…

20131114-140022.jpg
I’m typically a hot runner, so cold races are kind of miserable because I want my gloves for the first two miles, then my hands get too warm. I ended up taking my gloves off and putting them back on a dozen times during this race. The wind got to me!
Amanda was volunteering at the mile 21 water station, so I was looking forward to seeing her! Even with the hills and the cold, I was feeling great.

20131114-140403.jpg
I walked through the mile 22 aid station to drink my water, and when I tried to start running again, I noticed that my right quad had tightened up noticeably, and my gait changed dramatically. It’s almost like my right leg refused to land on a bent knee, so I had to land on an almost straight leg. How crazy. It changed the end of my race big time.
Luckily, Santa was there, coming to my rescue at the mile 23 aid station. If I didn’t have pictures of this, you would probably think I’d started hallucinating.

20131114-140815.jpg

20131114-140824.jpg
The last three miles of this race are basically an out-and-back on John Nolen Drive. It overlooks Lake Monona, right in Madison.

20131114-141019.jpg
When you turn around to head back, you’re at about mile 24.5, but it feels (and looks!) like the Capitol is sooooooo far away.

20131114-141113.jpg
Mile 26, starting the last uphill…

20131114-141149.jpg
Brian was waiting right by the finish line for me…

20131114-141221.jpg

20131114-141231.jpg
And I did it. Marathon number seven, finished. It was a slow race, made worse by the last five miles (I was in my way to a PR until mile 20!), but I pulled my gimpy butt across the line in 4:54:36.

20131114-141602.jpg
We ran back to our hotel in Middleton (the Extended Stay suites, highly recommend!), I took an ice bath, ate leftover Chinese food, and headed home. Oh, after a quick stop at CherryBerry to eat my weight in froyo. 🙂

Perpetually behind…

I’m behind, as always. I keep thinking that my life will slow down at some point and allow me to catch up.
I am starting to realize that in my line of work, with my personality, I will never again have a completely finished “to do” list.
Sigh… I still continue to make lists. My trusty Moleskins are full of scratched off lines of work, and dreams, and brainstorms, and doodles. Addresses and phone numbers are scribbled everywhere, and notes from everything to good fishing spots to packing lists for travel are stuck in between.
Here are a few more of my favorite things to share with you from last month.
Musical Thursdays at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art museum.

Congratulations, guys! My heart just warms with joy when I look at the love you have for each other.
I went to my first hearing of any kind at our state capitol in Madison. Trout Unlimited has a bill that will allow us to get license plates made that have TU on them, and a portion of the proceeds from purchasing these special plates comes back to TU. It was a very interesting experience- TU had about 45 people show up in support of the bill.

Trout Unlimited is such a worthwhile organization, and I’m so proud to help them on their mission of cold water conservation.
I’ll leave you with a few photos from Fox Cities 1/2 marathon, on a very chilly morning!

Megan and Jim! Jim is now a proud marathoner. 🙂 We’re lucky enough to be capturing their wedding in May of next year. Stay tuned for their adorable engagement portrait session in a few posts.

I’m always amazed that I have any energy left after shooting a wedding, but if I’ve learned anything from the loss of TK and Rachael, it’s that friends are to be cherished. I never miss a chance to catch up!

Riverfront Jazz Festival, Justiceworks 1/2, and fish shocking! :)

I love running. So every year, when fall rolls around, I find myself signing up for the Justiceworks 1/2 marathon on Labor Day weekend, since it’s practically in my backyard. It apparently doesn’t matter if it fits in my training schedule, I just can’t pass it up. So this year, I rode my cruiser over to the park to pick up my race packet on Friday night, and settled in for a good race on Saturday morning.
I fueled normally, drank a cup of coffee, and ran the 3/4 mile to the start line. I saw Robert, and we hung out and chatted until the trumpet began to play, and we were off!
The first miles go through downtown, then campus, and around Lake Joanis in Schmeekle Reserve. Imagine my surprise when I saw Ray around mile three, manning the water station!
20131010-142642.jpg
I chatted with a mom of three from Rapids for a few miles, then our entertainment started! This sweet choir was singing for us around mile 5.
20131010-142803.jpg
Miles, oh, 5-10ish are an out-and-back, and I love those. I get to say hi and smile at everyone both coming and going! I saw a couple friends, Eric and Lauryn, and met a lot of strangers. I danced at all the end-of-driveway boom boxes, made jokes with spectators, and basically had fun. Around mile nine, the humidity was starting to get to me, and I was feeling a little cranky!
20131010-143034.jpg
I did what any logical person would do- I ran faster, caught up to the guy in yellow ahead of me, and started talking. Turns out, it was his first half marathon! I gave him a couple mile pep talk, then zoomed off. Drank some water…
20131010-143149.jpg
…and ran into my friend, Heather, who was guarding the cross-street around mile 12. She saw me coming and snapped these two 🙂
20131010-143526.jpg20131010-143531.jpg
I came in all happy and smiley, and got my medal. Then, I looped back around about a half mile to cheer on my new friend in yellow to his first half finish. 🙂 He looked like he was having a hard time, so I was happy to lift his spirits for the final stretch.
I found Robert…
20131010-143748.jpg
…and Eric and Lauryn. 🙂
20131010-143815.jpg
All in all, it was a good race. A lady pulled me aside at the finish line, and told me that running behind me is miserable. She smiled, but said that suffering for 13.1 miles behind someone who is laughing, smiling, singing, dancing, cheering on strangers, and making jokes… well, that just adds insult to injury. She laughed, and I gave her a hug! I ran home, showered, then got ready to head over to Riverfront Jazz Festival to do some work!
Here is some of my favorites from both days, along with some of the friends who joined us for live music along the Wisconsin River. 🙂

Riverfront Jazz Festival is free to the public, and they sell raffle tickets and take donations to support jazz scholarships at the university. It wasn’t that long ago that we were selling tickets, hoping for a scholarship! We drank lots of wine, ate delicious food, and laughed, sang, and danced. ❤
On Labor Day Tuesday, I went night fishing in waders for the first time, pretty much unsuccessfully. I've been hex fishing in a kayak, and I've fished up until dark before, even fishing until I had to walk out in the dark, but I've never tried wading and casting in the dark before. I didn't even care that I didn't catch a fish because the fly we used was sooooooooooooooooo cute…

20131010-145146.jpg
Adorable, right?!
I also took my annual trip out with the DNR fisheries guys on a shocking expedition. We went on a section that has been heavily repaired by our local TU chapters, so I was anxious to see the results of the work that we’ve done.
The crew…

Since my blog readership is so widespread and growing, the likelihood that a congressman is reading this is pretty high, right? In that case, I wanted to share a quote I heard directly on a call this morning.

“Outside of Washington, D.C., conservation is not a partisan issue.”
-Lynn Scarlett

Dear Congress, I’m begging you, for all of the previously mentioned reasons… Please let us get back to our work.
