Living the dream: babysitting, MKE Art Museum wedding, families, wood carving, food, and a girls’ weekend…

Sometimes I feel like I am really living the dream.
Babysitting for my friends’ totally sweet little babe is one of those times. Halle, you’re the cutest!

We went for a walk and I saw this birch tree that creeped me the heck out. I usually run on this path, and I’m obviously so fast that I never saw this until I was on a leisurely walk.

20131004-163523.jpg
Mother Nature, you’re hilarious.
I can’t get enough of her cute face.

20131004-163639.jpg
After babysitting, B and I headed over to Lambeau courtesy of my sole sister, Nancy! B brought Devon to keep him company. First preseason game, we like to start the season as early as possible πŸ™‚

The weekend of August 17th, we headed down to Milwaukee to capture the absolutely gorgeous Milwaukee Art Museum wedding of Jen and Josh. The guys started their morning with golf, and as usual, the ladies started with manicures and hairstyles πŸ™‚

We spent time on the pontoon, cruising around the lake, a hilly country run, bonfires, hot tubbing, a trip to the Amish store, tubing, good food, and lots of laughing.

Love, hops, the Twin Cities, a race, fitness, and something REALLY important.

So much is going on in my mind lately. I’m reeling!
I’ll start with some love… Katie and Royal had a beautiful late July wedding, complete with a line-up of classic cars πŸ™‚

Katie’s hair was one of the most stunning bridal styles I’ve ever seen, and the parade of cars brought me back to a classier time, before wedding parties traveled by stretch Hummers.
The first week of August, I attended a banquet held by the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes. It recognized women of courage and character, and when I arrived, the ladies gave me the patch that we designed for Stream Girls.

20131003-115653.jpg
I cried a little tear of joy and pride when I saw this. So much work and planning went into this project, and seeing the final patch brought it all home πŸ™‚
I “hopped” over to Fencerow Bounty, a hops farm up in Northern Wisconsin, near the Eau Claire River water basin, for a photo shoot. David is the farmer, and Mitchel does the brewing.

20131003-120442.jpg
It was a beautifully sunny day, and the guys were getting ready for their harvest party, a time where all their friends come over, eat, drink, be merry, and collect some hops.

I was educated on everything even remotely related to hops… did you know that you can throw a couple hop cones in a cheap beer ahem, Miller Lite and it will improve the taste?
We drank beer, and ate cheese made from the milk produced by the farm’s dairy cows.

20131003-120920.jpg
Thanks for having me out, guys! See you next year for the harvest party…
I used that cheese and beer to fuel me for my weekend trip to the Twin Cities to visit the Weisses and run. Pack up the dog and the husband…

20131003-121055.jpg

20131003-121113.jpg
We arrived Friday night, and Curtis and Mo greeted us at their beautiful new home. I took it pretty easy, since I was getting up pretty early on Saturday morning to run the Minnesota Half Marathon. It was sort of a spur-of-the moment race, since I rarely get a Saturday off, and I can’t pass up an opportunity to run a race.
Saturday morning arrived all warm and wonderful, and I headed to St. Paul for the start.

20131003-121346.jpg
Good morning, sleepy girl.

20131003-121427.jpg
This race was very unique in that it also had an inline skate half at the same time. I loved seeing those guys on the double out-and-back course.

20131003-121533.jpg
I made a new friend around mile four when I laughed at his shirt…

20131003-121613.jpg
So true. America, put down the drugs, and get off your ass. This guy actually had a small knee procedure a few months before the race, so he probably should have been resting, but we all know that runners have a few screws loose can be a little ridiculous.

20131003-121751.jpg

20131003-121817.jpg
It was a beautiful day for a race, though this course was pretty hilly. I wasn’t prepared for it at all! I was a very smart runner and thought, hey, if I add a minute or two per mile, I’ll finish this race feeling great, still be able to help my friends move, and won’t walk like a peg-legged toddler. I took it easy, at least when I could. I wanted to sprint down those hills!

20131003-122010.jpg
The uphills? Not so much.

20131003-122046.jpg
I spent the last three miles chatting with the 2:20 pacer who had no one running with him! The 2:30 pacer had on a sparkly skirt, I’m sure that’s why everyone else held back πŸ˜‰ I strolled my way across that finish like I’d just walked back from the kitchen with a cold beer.

20131003-122209.jpg
Back to Curtis and Mo’s new home for a shower and breakfast, then a hard day of moving. I’ll skip right to the fun part- the housewarming ice cream cake πŸ™‚

20131003-122326.jpg
I love seeing my Delta Omicron sisters and brothers. We’re a tight knit group. Thanks for the fabulous weekend, friends ❀
I returned home with a couple new wine racks from IKEA, and hung them next to my very first start-to-finish photoshop project. Yay!

20131003-122518.jpg
It’s kind of ironic, since I wasn’t old enough to drink wine when I did that project. πŸ™‚
I’m flying through these fitness photos for you- but it’s safe to say that I spent quite a bit of time at Adventure 212 that week…

Feeling inspired to move yet?
Good.
Because I want you to be inspired when I tell you about my current stressor with the government shut down. I’m sure most of you know someone who isn’t working because of the shut down. Runners who train in national parks in big cities (I’m looking at you, DC) are SOL. My Olivia act winner, the Soba family, told me that some children with experimental cancer treatments aren’t receiving it during this shut down. (Remember this cutie?)

20131003-123349.jpg
Yeah, that really sucks.
Do you know what else sucks?
People who make their living as fishing guides losing access to their lakes and streams because they’re shut down. They don’t have unlimited days to reschedule.
The Wild Trout Symposium, which meets every three years with top scientists, fisheries managers, biologists, and anglers… had to be cancelled this year. Yes, let’s waste all that talent, and all the fabulous ideas that would have come out of that conference.
How about all the stream work nationwide that is halted, either due to holding back government funds, or newly restricted access? The field season is almost over, dear congressional buddies. This stuff can’t wait a year. Those locally contracted workers will go find work that is more “stable and consistent.” Growl, my claws are coming out.
Government websites are shut down, restricting access to important data about water, soil, etc… and don’t even get me started on the financial impact this has on all the communities that border national parks.
There is telemetry equipment used to track the movement of lake trout in Yellowstone that needs to be removed. Good luck sneaking in there.
And families with vacations ruined.
There isn’t anyone in this country that is unaffected by this shutdown. Please, Congress, get your shit together.
Since I can’t leave you on a note like that here’s some happy cows to brighten your day.

Thanks for reading. Be awesome, friends. Do something amazing. ❀

A summer of grilling, families, running, paddling, and reading…

Right in the heart of grilling season, the folks over at Ski’s Meat Market called me up for some promotional photos. They haven’t made them to their website yet, but are featured in ads and fliers.

I’ll be going back for a shoot with the cheese case next! πŸ™‚
The Laudons, who I met through Trout Unlimited, celebrated their 50th anniversary this summer. They had us come over for family photos of the whole crew who flew in for the occasion. What a beautiful family!

20131002-101453.jpg
Congratulations, Jim and Marilyn! πŸ™‚
George (my beer-drinking-cycling-running friend) and I ran a little race over in the geographical center of Wisconsin- the Pittsville Heart and Sole race. It’s always a weeknight close to my absolute favorite holiday,, the 4th of July. Last year, it was so hot that I almost drowned in my own sweat, but this year was a pleasant five miles. All proceeds go to support this small town fire department. What’s not to love!

20131002-101935.jpg

20131002-102022.jpg
On the actual 4th, the Beggs family invited us over to their lake house for photos with their extended family. In a word? Granddaughters.

20131002-102318.jpg

20131002-102323.jpg
And as always, it wouldn’t be summer in Wisconsin without hearing the Mark Little Band on the chain while drinking Jameson.

20131002-102521.jpg
Love you guys. Love dancing in a sundress, in the heat of the summer, to your music.
I usually give Lifest it’s own post, but I am not going to post a single photo from my camera this year. I was “promoted” to photo team supervisor this year, so I basically felt like a nervous mom…
“The pyrotechnics are starting, where is everyone?”
“Stay away from the flames!”
“Where are your earplugs?!”
“Are you drinking water? HAVE YOU PEED TODAY?”
I snagged one image off my phone for you guys to get a feel for where I was most of the time…

20131002-102949.jpg
On the Saturday of Lifest, they host a 5K. You know I had to get in on that action. I even dragged B along for the ride.

…and, even though I’m sure you all think I won, I finished in the middle of the pack, and was greeted by the infamous Bill and Darrell!

20131002-103322.jpg
A few days of shooting, a lot of friends, some great music and fellowship… And of course, selfies of me with my neck strap.

Until next year… avoid sensor dust, my ninjagraphers.
I’d barely been home from Lifest for 24 hours before I found myself up at Cynthia’s charming bookstore in Wausau for a photo shoot with River District Theatre’s latest featured performer.

20131002-104403.jpg
I’m happy to report she is feeling better and healing well. Speaking of healing…
I ran some single track trails with my Oklahoma friend, Brandon. 10 miles, two skinned knees.

Congratulations, Mr. and. Mrs. McCarron!
One of the things I love about shooting weddings is being a part of this brand new family unit as it’s being created. Heidi and Maxx called me up to ask if I would be a part of their tradition with their “picture-in-a-picture” shoot. Basically, on their first anniversary, they had a picture taken of them holding their wedding photo. Then they framed that new image, and had me take a photo of them on their second anniversary, holding their first anniversary photo. So cool!

20131002-105519.jpg
I couldn’t resist taking this beautiful couple to a perfectly dreamy spot.

20131002-105550.jpg
Keep up the love, you two!
My best friend, Amy, was a star in a murder mystery dinner theatre. Brian and I headed up to see her perform, and eat steak, of course!

20131002-105757.jpg
We practically wore the same dress!
Happy fifth birthday to our sweet nephew, Reid. He was present at our wedding, but probably couldn’t see or hear anything, since he was still inside my sister-in-law! πŸ™‚ It’s amazing how time flies.

20131002-105933.jpg
I’ll leave you with a few yoga photos- I am in the middle of doing a new series of group fitness photos for Adventure 212, and this is the class that I attend… I almost put down my camera and jumped in!

Friends, love, and collaborations.

Hey, y’all. I’ve had too much fun in the last couple weeks. I’ve tried to squeeze in all of my favorite things. Here’s a recap, heavy on the photos. πŸ™‚
I went for a nasty, slushy, slippery run with George.

20130224-202649.jpg
Twinsies.

20130224-202717.jpg
I had an amazing lunch with Nancy and Rickopedia. Two wonderfully kind people, two intelligently training athletes. Whenever I catch up with them, I leave 1) smiling, and 2) smarter. Or at least with a good running head screwed on my shoulders.

20130224-202848.jpg
Rainbow trout pedicure… yes, I invented it.

20130224-202924.jpg
Lunch with Jake, an uplifting, funny, caring, drummer. He says, “Hi!”

20130224-203026.jpg
Lunch with Bill. I have spring fever, and he’s rooting for cold weather.

20130224-203218.jpg
Happy Valentine’s Day to me! Brian made my day by grilling out for dinner and bringing my flowers and my favorite kinds of dark chocolate.

20130224-203333.jpg
I did a photo shoot at Bistro 212 for their Valentine’s Dinner. Love the owners, love the chef, love the food. Here’s a few of my favorites.

20130224-203622.jpg

20130224-203645.jpg

20130224-203710.jpg
I even dolled up for the occasion. Well, that… And it was date night. B and I headed over to Waupaca to hear our favorite Peach play.

20130224-203800.jpg

20130224-203811.jpg

20130224-203822.jpg
We met with Jim and Megan to finalize photo plans for their 2014 wedding. I’ve known Megan since junior high, so it was wonderful to reconnect over something as lovely as a wedding πŸ™‚

20130224-204012.jpg
I got my car back, too. πŸ™‚ no picture, just pure happiness over here. Two weeks without it really reminded me of how blessed I am to have a vehicle of my own.
One more shoot over at 212, with some of their trainers and a TRX demo.

20130224-204140.jpg

20130224-204157.jpg

20130224-204219.jpg
A few training runs with Brian, getting him ready for next weekend’s Bock run… But I forgot to take many photos. Picture a red-faced, happy couple. πŸ™‚ here’s one that B took. πŸ™‚

20130224-204600.jpg
I went to Katrina Shankland’s public office hours to ask questions and learn more about the mining bill currently in our state.

20130224-204521.jpg
I went up to Wausau to meet my friend, Melissa. She works for the Girl Scouts, and I’m working on a top-secret super-awesome collaboration between GSA and Trout Unlimited.

20130224-204749.jpg
A TU general meeting, with a presentation from Wyatt and Matt about fishing the tributaries to the Great Lakes…

20130224-204827.jpg
We got a new mattress! Since it was being delivered while B was at work, we moved our old mattress and boxspring into the living room Thursday night, so I could haul it outside by myself. It was strange sleeping on my bed, but in the living room. I loved sleeping next to my marimba.

20130224-205024.jpg
We celebrated National Margarita day by making shrimp tacos with fresh corn tortillas and strawberry margaritas. Delicious!

20130224-205115.jpg

20130224-205130.jpg

20130224-205137.jpg
Saturday brought lunker structure building with TU. Yes, they let me use the big nailer. I may have not been the most efficient, but they let me do it anyway. What a group. πŸ™‚

20130224-205300.jpg

20130224-205352.jpg

20130224-205408.jpg

20130224-205500.jpg

20130224-205514.jpg

20130224-205526.jpg
I think I got an albino kiwi. Is that a thing? Or maybe it is some kind of crazy hybrid…

20130224-205614.jpg
One last thing. πŸ™‚ thanks for hanging in here!
I went to a wonderful concert over at Scaraboccio Art Museum today: Faure and John Cage, sung by Susan Bender. It was wonderful- one of those concerts that reminds me how blessed I am to be able to appreciate and understand truly good music.

20130224-205758.jpg
I’m loving my life. That’s all I can say right now.

Fishing on my mind.

Hey, friends! It’s been a great week up here. I was able to get in a few great snowy runs, instead of being on the treadmill.

It was warm enough for 3/4 length pants one day. Days like that make my spring fever much worse!
One of the perks of this cold weather is the ice fishing. I went out with my friend, Matt, and caught some of my biggest fish yet. Those pike just smile so much and have such amazing teeth.

I can operate that auger all by myself. In fact, I came home smelling like fish and gasoline. Brian’s a lucky guy! πŸ™‚
Earlier this week, the Fly Fishing Film tour came through town. Well, came through DePere. I didn’t have a ticket (they sold out quickly!), but Matt had to work, so he gave me his. A bunch of guys from our chapter of TU headed over for the show. To be honest, it was one of those times that I was glad to be one of the few women- there was no line for the restroom! πŸ™‚ Winter events like that make me excited for fly fishing this spring.
My new glasses came in this week, too. I like to call this look nerdy-chic.

20130210-172646.jpg
Yesterday, our TU chapter hosted a fly-tying workshop. We even had a few girls come out!

20130210-172838.jpg

20130210-172853.jpg

20130210-172859.jpg
Way to go, ladies. I hope they find some hungry bass with those pink flies πŸ™‚
Brian’s been spending every spare moment working on my car. It’s still giving us a load of trouble! I spent my morning in yoga pants, with my head in here…

20130210-173013.jpg
I don’t know how he works on this all the time. I guess it’s safe to say I’m not a gear head.
Please send prayers and positive energy our way so I can have my car back soon! πŸ™‚

Fishermen, dancers, runners, and musicians.

I usually keep myself pretty busy, but I’m doing a great job of running myself ragged lately! πŸ™‚
Last you heard, I was heading over to O’so for their special release. Ooh, it was worth it!

20130203-160029.jpg

20130203-160040.jpg

20130203-160054.jpg
We also stopped by at Central Waters’ anniversary party. Last weekend was filled with good beer and good company. We even ran into Sarah!

20130203-160218.jpg
We had some wintery weather here, which made playing in the snow and ice a lot of fun.

20130203-160324.jpg
The snow froze into ice on the end of my ponytail, and whenever I turned my head to look before crossing the street, I was whipped with that icy hair!

20130203-160412.jpg
I finished up my run in time to head up to Wausau to take my gramps to lunch with an old friend.

20130203-160707.jpg
Gary Borger is well-known in the fly fishing world, and he’s a fishing friend of my gramps’. I was reading one of Gary’s books, and he told a few stories about fishing with Grandpa a long time ago! How cool.

20130203-160852.jpg
I was lucky enough that Gramps sent me home with one of his orchids.

20130203-160935.jpg
It’s brightening my kitchen counter in a bud vase.

20130203-160954.jpg
The middle of my week and weekend were dominated with photo shoots. I got the chance to meet up with a few running friends of mine who are being featured in Hoopla for their work on the Point Bock Run.

20130203-161056.jpg
The race sold out in record time this year, and Brian and I are lucky to have registered in time! πŸ™‚
I also had a photo shoot at Waupaca’s Ale House for River Cities Jazz. I know a lot of the musicians in that group, and it was wonderful to hear them play again.

20130203-161218.jpg

20130203-161228.jpg

20130203-161233.jpg

20130203-161239.jpg

20130203-161244.jpg
It started snowing during the gig, so it was a slippery drive home. We’ve had our share of winter weather this week, for sure!
On Saturday morning, I was able to take in a rehearsal of the Point Dance Ensemble. I’ve known their director, Pam, since I was in college, and it’s always a pleasure to see what projects she’s working on.

20130203-161451.jpg

20130203-161455.jpg

20130203-161502.jpg
I logged a few miles (indoors, sadly) and got ready to head north for the Wisconsin Trout Unlimited State Council Banquet. I sold tickets, as usual, and enjoyed the company of our state’s fishing community.

20130203-161617.jpg

20130203-161624.jpg
The live music this year was provided by John Greiner and Mat Buchman. It was a joy to hear them play once again.

20130203-161704.jpg

20130203-161719.jpg
There was a new award this year, called the Unsung Hero award, and each chapter had the opportunity to nominate one of their members. We were so pleased to be able to nominate Norb!!

20130203-161843.jpg

20130203-161851.jpg

20130203-161900.jpg
I took photos of lots of the prizes, but I was lucky enough to win one. Here’s my haul…

20130203-161958.jpg
Now I guess I have to find someone to tell me if I should hang this bamboo rod on the wall, or have it worked on and fish with it!
Brian was able to fix my car and is currently on his way home from Green Bay after working on it since Friday night. I’m so excited to get my car back πŸ˜€
Hope you had a good weekend! Happy Superbowl Commercial Sunday! Go, Pack, GO!

Finished with antibiotics, Cat and Brett, family, tying flies, Talia and JJ, and lots of traveling.

I’m proud to say I have officially finished my 10 days on antibiotics. Now, the probiotics begin πŸ™‚
Brian and I had influenza, and mine paired up with a sinus infection to keep me pretty miserable and out-of-it for almost three weeks.
I’m almost disappointed to report that I’ve run a total of 6.25 miles this year. On a positive note, I finished off last year with a total of 670.4. That means $67.04 will come from out of our pocket in memory of Rachael. 2012 was a heck of year for my Miles for Melanoma schedule- Bock run, Oshkosh 1/2, Crazylegs, Lacrosse 5K, Madison Marathon, Grandma’s Marathon, Heart and Sole 5 miler, Lifest 5K, Fox Cities 1/2, Clam Chowdah Challenge, Noodleini 15K, and the Frostbite. Amen to that, and we miss you, Rachael.
One of my running resolutions for 2013 was is to run a higher weekly average- mostly meaning that I’d continue to run seriously between training for races. I will be happy to get going on that resolution as soon as I’m feeling 100%. In the meantime, I’ve been cross training and trying to keep in good spirits.

Since I’ve been “gone” for the better part of the month, here’s a little recap, dominated by photos πŸ™‚
We hosted a fun cocktail party, complete with a surprise guest from London, my beloved junior high crush, Jon Marx πŸ™‚ I didn’t think he could get any cuter, but he did… He now has an accent. Oh, dear.

Christmas preparations, in a nutshell.

First and foremost- please hug your loved ones. After the national tragedy of the loss of those beautiful elementary school children, I’ve been reminded to tell those special people in my life that I love them. Like this handsome face!

We’ve been busy getting ready for Christmas in our home.

I love our Charlie Brown tree! I have almost all of our gifts wrapped and ready, under the tree. I wrote out all of our Christmas cards, too!

We spent some time working on our homemade gifts for the family, as well- home brewed beer! We bottled at Joe’s house on Saturday.

So far, I have all of my Christmas print orders fulfilled, and everything framed and matted, waiting to be happily given as gifts πŸ™‚
This may be the most prepared I’ve ever been for Christmas, as long as I can remember. I’ve been getting spiritually ready, too…
Our church has been discussing The Advent Conspiracy for the last few weeks. If you’re looking for a deeper meaning of Christmas, it’s not too late. Check it out!
I’ve had a few short, fun runs this week- I’ve mostly been cross-training and doing some exercises to strengthen my hips. My physical therapist checked me out upon my return from Boston, and my muscles aren’t quite in balance. Bring on the resistance bands and ArcTrainer!
