A Chicago trip + Amy’s bluegrassy visit

My Madison TU friend, Amy, was up in Wausau for work, so we met up here in Point for dinner and an impromptu bluegrass concert. The Fox Theatre needs a lot of work to be reopened, so we went to their fundraiser featuring some local bluegrass folks. It was held in the fine arts center on campus, where I spent thousands of hours. I love that place! We danced a ton and drank local beer. Best weeknight surprise yet!

Thanks for coming, Amy! It was great to catch up with you. 🙂
Lydia and I braved the fresh snow for a great run in Waupaca.

I came home, warmed up, and packed my bags for a couple days in Chicago. The running there was much warmer… There were still leaves blowing around!

My aunt, Maureen, and I went to a turkey raffle with her friends. It was a hoot!

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/2fd/21149155/files/2015/01/img_4805.jpg
We stopped for Chicago dogs at Gene & Jude’s. No ketchup allowed.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/2fd/21149155/files/2015/01/img_4806.jpg
There were a couple guys eating on their tailgate who had a bottle of contraband ketchup that they shared for our fries. These folks don’t mess around! 🙂 I was so garlicky that it was coming out my pores while running the next day.
We came back to Maureen’s, and I was just finishing up work on my last wedding gallery of the season. I was almost ready to hunker down for the night, but my cousin Max, his beautiful girlfriend, Ashley, and their friend, Joe, came over. They convinced me to go out. I rarely regret going out, so Maureen loaned me a sweater dress and we rallied. We finished the night at a whiskey bar (my favorite!) and the girls were deemed shuffleboard champions after an obviously long winning streak.

On Sunday, we celebrated cousin Michael’s birthday, Blackhawks style, and I got to see my aunts and uncles, including my great aunt Eileen. She’s 91 and sharp as a tack!

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/2fd/21149155/files/2015/01/img_4819.jpg
I stopped to visit my dad on the way home, and started the week of Thanksgiving preparation!
As always, thanks for reading, friends.

I shot a rifle + our country trip for Lily’s baptism + Tiffany’s moving

I’ve known this pretty woman since first grade.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/2fd/21149155/files/2015/01/img_4759.jpg
We went to elementary school together in the Gifted and Talented program at Riverside, and survived junior high school together, and thrived (though we made bad fashion choices) in Songspinners together at DCE High School. We even lived in dorms next to each other in college at UW-SP, and she helped me get my job at Starbucks. She met a super cute boy while serving coffee, and in a fairytale-esque story, they fell in love and got married. They just recently got a place in Carlsbad, CA, so they are moving far from home to the sunny West coast. I love it. They had a going away party in Appleton, so Brian and I headed over. We even found my friend (and birthday twin!), Ryan.

Congratulations, Clarks! We’re excited for you 🙂
We paired that trip with the sweet baptism of our niece, Lily, and stayed at my mother-in-law’s country house. For these purposes, I define “country” as being surrounded by corn fields on three sides. 🙂
Abbie and I went for a run while Brian sighted in his new rifle.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/2fd/21149155/files/2015/01/img_4770-0.jpg
Brian was hard at work…

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/2fd/21149155/files/2015/01/img_4771.jpg
I took a shower, stretched out with Abbie, and came out to check on Brian. He’d left two bullets for me. I’ve never shot a rifle before, so he showed me all the parts. I liked the lever action, I felt like I was in a cowboy movie! He gave me ear protection, I lined everything up, and sloooooowwwwwwwly squeezed the trigger. The bullet fired. I screamed. It was loud! I hit the very edge of the target.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/2fd/21149155/files/2015/01/img_4774.jpg
I didn’t want to do it again, but Brian convinced me to.
I lined it up. Shot the gun. Muffled my scream.
The middle is pretty good, right?

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/2fd/21149155/files/2015/01/img_4772.jpg
I think I look good with a gun.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/2fd/21149155/files/2015/01/img_4773.jpg
Too bad I have pretty much no interest in killing an animal, though I’m really rethinking the food that I choose and why. This article that my friend, Kyle, shared with me is a good read- The Meat Eater Revolution.
I spent the rest of the day curled up on my mother-in-law’s couch, working on photos. It was a pretty relaxing and productive afternoon, and we cooked a beautiful dinner for the boys.
Sunday morning was the baptism. Lily is too sweet, and we just love her.

Disco Cures Cancer 2014 + Becky and Trav

I made it home from my Minnesota/Iowa trip on Friday afternoon, charged all my batteries and set up my camera gear, then threw on a shift dress, lots of makeup, big hair, and headed up to Disco Cures Cancer in Wausau with my dance partner, Dale. We met up with some of our dance students, and we had an awesome time!

I didn’t stay out too late, since I had a big day on Saturday- Becky and Travis’ wedding! Dancing shook out the last of my sore marathon legs, and I slept wonderfully.
Saturday morning, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed…

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/2fd/21149155/files/2014/12/img_4451.jpg
Now, I know that I should narrow these photos down, but I just can’t. Becky and Trav are just too cute, and these photos are so genuine… So please, grab a big cup of coffee or glass of wine and hunker down. Enjoy!

Recovery: am I supposed to be taking it easy?

In traditional Heidi style, I was way overbooked. The day after the marathon was filled with a physical therapy appointment (to check me out and test out my stress fractured foot), an oil change, and a pedicure appointment with Carmel. 🙂 My sore little toes loved it!

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/f69/80584210/files/2014/12/img_4312.jpg
At least I wore compression socks!
I drank smoothies…

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/f69/80584210/files/2014/12/img_4310.jpg
…and smelled the roses.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/f69/80584210/files/2014/12/img_4309.jpg
I even found time to do a brook trout manicure before my trip to Minnesota…

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/f69/80584210/files/2014/12/img_4316.jpg
…and I snuck in a photo shoot at the next local brewery- North Abbey Brewing. The space was recently purchased, so they’re in the middle of demolition and starting to move equipment in. I can’t wait for them to build their dream so I can see (and taste!) the finished product!

I spent my day and a half at home being a busy bee, then loaded up the car to go visit the TU Western Restoration staff at their retreat in Minnesota. It was pretty cool for me to visit the driftless area in another state. I love learning through travel! We had some beautiful weather, took a couple field trips, and I ran on the trails near our cabin.

I loved this trip. It was wonderful to meet some new people and see some old friends! 🙂 after the retreat, I drove a half hour south with my friend, Mike, to catch my first Iowa fish. Trout season was closed in Wisconsin and Minnesota, but Iowa was just a stone’s throw away.

Chicago Marathon 2014: a race recap

Are you ready to share in my crazy adventure?
We made it to my aunt Maureen’s beautiful Chicago home at 3:00 in the morning, and tried to go to sleep. I did end up getting about three hours of sleep, then I had to get up and get ready to run.
I set out my bib ahead of time, and at Robert’s suggestion, put my name on it.

IMG_4263.JPG
That was awesome. It resulted in hundreds of strangers cheering for me by name.
I was proud that I’d kept everything organized, so race morning was a breeze. It took me about fifteen minutes to get dressed, and we headed out, with a quick stop at Starbucks for a hot cup of coffee. I drank that, and fueled with one of my favorite treats- Rice Krispie treats made with chex instead. Extra bonus if there is sprinkles… And since I made these, they were covered in rainbow sprinkle magic.

We’d anticipated some traffic, but tried to make a plan for a good spot for Brian to drop me off. I was chilly, so I wanted to stay in the warm car as long as possible. As we neared the place to drop me off, the map looked a little disheartening.

IMG_4265.JPG
After waiting in the car as long as I felt comfortable (I didn’t want to miss the start!), I got out and started walking. It was a little confusing, as runners were literally walking every direction. Normally, I can just follow everyone else. I relied on my GPS, and eventually I found these angels!

IMG_4266.JPG
They directed me through to security, where I was scanned with the magic wand.

IMG_4267.JPG
I started out near this guy, who was the pacer for the 4:30 group, and he was running his 100th marathon! How cool. 🙂 Way to go, Jerry!

IMG_4268.JPG
Brian wins the award for most awesome support team at every race, but he came to my rescue this morning by picking up an emergency blanket for me to use to keep warm while waiting for the race to start, and surprising me with it when I got out of the car!

IMG_4270.JPG
While I waited for the race to start, with a few thousand of my closest friends, this was the view in front…

IMG_4269.JPG
…and behind me.

IMG_4271.JPG
I met this super cute girl who was running her first marathon. How cool! I did my best to encourage her, and I offered to share my emergency stash of Skittles, if she needed them.

IMG_4272.JPG
After about a half hour, I finally crossed the start line!

IMG_4274.JPG
I tried to take pictures as often as I could, but to be totally honest, I was just enjoying the course! I loved running along the Magnificent Mile. When I was growing up, I watched Oprah religiously, and that’s the only reason I knew what the Magnificent Mile was. 🙂 As I ran, I cried a lot… almost every time someone called my name! Putting my name on my bib was a great idea. I high fived a ton of spectators, and thanked every volunteer and policeman.
Wrigleyville was awesome- I’ve run through that neighborhood frequently- almost every time I visit my Chicago family.
Before I knew it, I found myself in Boystown.

IMG_4275.JPG

IMG_4277.JPG
Brian popped up to cheer me on, and caught me mid-stride! I was SO excited to see him. ❤

IMG_1743.JPG

IMG_1747.JPG
I can’t remember where these Taiko drummers were…

IMG_4278.JPG
I loved all the music in the different neighborhoods.
I made it to the halfway point, still wearing my signature smile!

IMG_4281.JPG
In most of the half and full marathons that I’ve run, there is one guy who runs the whole thing carrying a full size American flag. This race was no exception!

IMG_4279.JPG
I stuck with that guy for a while, as the crowds were all chanting, “USA! USA!”
Somewhere around mile 20, we went through Pilsen, a big Latino community. The crowds were huge, and there was a lot of fun music playing. I danced my way through that neighborhood!

IMG_4284.JPG
About this time, I noticed my right arm was stinging pretty terribly. I thought I’d managed to cover my entire body in Body Glide to prevent chafing, but I’d forgotten the inside of my right arm, by my tricep. After, oh… 40,000 steps, and 40,000 times that I’d rubbed my arm in the seam of my shirt, my arm was screaming for help. Luckily, just in time for the festivities of Chinatown (and keeping with the red is lucky theme)…

IMG_4285.JPG
DOCTORS! I ran up to them, and said, “I need help.” They were so awesome. I was still smiling, so they knew I wasn’t seriously hurt, but I couldn’t see the bottom of my arm and they were the ones with the magical Vasoline, so they helped me and rubbed it on my arm. Good as new! Thanks, guys. 🙂 They were a lifesaver!
There were a few corners with cameras and big screens, so we could see ourselves coming around the corner.

IMG_4280.JPG
Once I got closer to the finish and entered the Prairie District, I started crying all over again.

IMG_4287-3.JPG
I started my princess wave to the crowd about a mile from the finish, and Brian had snuck his way into the spectator crowd around mile 26!

IMG_1744.JPG
If you look closely, you can see me, in my orange skirt, just to the left of that sign, waving! 🙂

IMG_1746.JPG
The security was really ramped up after the bombings in Boston, so general spectators weren’t allowed at the start and finish lines. We had spectators until about 26.1, though, which is where I stopped for my final race selfie… 🙂

IMG_4288-1.JPG
…before running the through the finish chute.

IMG_4289.JPG
I cried. A lot. Of course!
A few yards past the finish, our first stop was these kind people who gave me my medal.

IMG_4291.JPG
They were so sweet, and they offered to take my picture!

IMG_4311.JPG
Next stop? Bananarama.

IMG_4297-2.JPG
Mountains of bananas, with a castle of banana boxes built behind the tables. I can’t even imagine how many bananas they brought in!
Third (and most important) stop: beer.

IMG_4298.JPG
I had been crying for quite some time, so she gave me two beers. I told her that I wasn’t hurt, I was happy… but she insisted I take two, anyway. 🙂
I hobbled over to the finish area, and I had planned to make my way directly to the massage tent. Big races often have a massage tent with massage students, and it is like a little slice of very painful heaven. I was sort of surprised at how far we had to talk after the finish line to see our families, and the icing on top of the cake was the SET OF STAIRS that we had to walk down. It was only about 8 steps, but we all stared at each other as if this was some kind of cruel mirage. I didn’t take a picture, I was too busy holding my beer, banana, and trying not to topple over while waddling down. I went straight to the massage tent, and waited in line for a few minutes, when Brian found me! He surprised me with roses, and I was so excited. 🙂 I gave him my beer while I spent fifteen minutes being stretched and massaged. I walked out of that tent a new woman!

IMG_1745.JPG

IMG_1749.JPG
We walked a few blocks to the L…

IMG_1748.JPG
…those stairs. Ouch.

IMG_4299.JPG
Brian, in his infinite wisdom, parked right by an L stop in Wrigleyville, and next to a Starbucks. 🙂 Cold runner + hot coffee = VERY HAPPY HEIDI!

IMG_4301.JPG
When we got back to Maureen’s house, I took the most amazing hot shower, changed into cozy clothes, and enjoyed some serious Chicago pizza with my cousins. Oh… and champagne. Lots of champagne.

IMG_4302.JPG

IMG_4308.JPG

IMG_4303-0.JPG

It was an incredible race. I’ve never smiled so much during a marathon! 🙂
One of the things that made this race experience unique for me was the spectators. At most races, there are normal spectators, who half-heartedly clap while very busily looking for their friend/spouse/child who is running. Here, in Chicago, the spectators were people who live here. People who came out to cheer just because they can. 🙂 The neighborhoods all seemed to have their own identifying flair and they welcomed us all with open arms! Of course, individual runners had their own little cheering squads, and since there were so many countries represented along the athletes, the spectators were speaking and holding signs in different languages!
I ended up placing 27,563rd, coming in at 4:54:49. It was definitely not my fastest, but my happiest race, and running without headphones was a great challenge.
Thank you all so much for supporting me and cheering for me from afar!

My crazy busy Chicago Marathon weekend!

A few weeks before the race, I started finalizing my plans for the marathon. Where was I staying? What was I eating? What was I wearing before, during, and after the race? Part of that planning process is planning when to go to the expo to pick up my bib. Chicago Marathon is the biggest race I’ve run, with 45,000 marathoners.
To make a long story short, this race has been on my bucket list, but October has been really trendy for weddings the last few years. When we hadn’t booked a wedding for the weekend of the race, I decided to keep the weekend open, and I entered the lottery. I was one of the lucky folks who made it in on my first try. 🙂 Shortly after I found out I made it into the race, our friends Lindsey and Derek came to us and asked us to capture their big day… scheduled for the day before the marathon. I couldn’t say no. Sure, this flies in the face of all race advice… the kind of stuff that says 1) rest, 2) put your feet up, literally, 3) hydrate, 4) up your carbohydrate intake, etc….
It didn’t matter. I couldn’t wait to work with these guys!!
I knew I wasn’t going to be easy on my body by shooting a full coverage wedding the day before the race, then getting in the car, driving riding four and a half hours to Chicago, arriving at 3 am, snagging a few hours sleep, then running a full… and just when you would think that was the worst part, I realized I couldn’t go to the expo on Saturday to pick up my bib. In the past, when I couldn’t make the expo (ex: it was in Massachussets, and I was still flying in, or I was shooting a wedding, so I couldn’t pop in), the race directors would either 1) mail me my bib, 2) allow me to send someone in my place to pick it up, with a photocopy of my license, or 3) allow me to pick up the bib on race morning. I called the Chicago Marathon folks to see what my options were, and they said that none of those would work. I asked if I could donate my bib to another runner who didn’t make the lottery, and they said no. I asked if I could sell it to someone, and they said no. Unfortunately for me, I was SOL. Of course, I could drive the four hours from home down to Chicago to pick it up on Friday, then drive back home to shoot on Saturday… So that is what I did.
On Thursday night, my friend Henry and his family (including two super cute little girls!) opened their home to me, so I drove 3/4 of the way on Thursday. They pumped me full of pasta and giggles, and I am thankful!

IMG_4245.JPG
The expo was grand, and majestic, and superbly awesome. Being an emotional runner, I cried just walking into the place.

I didn’t spend too much time walking around, because I had to hurry home to get to a photo shoot with Kameron. The Friday afternoon traffic through both Chicago and Milwaukee was pretty bad, but I made it home in just over five hours, and headed over to this shoot. Kameron is a musician and composer, and he was featured in Hoopla this month.

After my shoot, I went home, ate some sweet potatoes, and packed up my bags: camera gear for the wedding, comfy clothes for the late-night drive to Chicago, race gear, post-race clothes, all my shower and recovery stuff… Our living room was a disaster.
We woke up early and headed up to Wausau to capture Lindsey and Derek’s big day. It was such a fun day, and the time just flew by. Take a peek at why I couldn’t turn them down- a gorgeous, kind, loving, authentic couple. Their love jumps out of all these images, and you can just tell how much they care about their friends and family. ❤

Lindsey even gave me a couple pieces of wedding cake to carb load in the car, and they told a bunch of their guests about the race, so a ton of strangers wished me luck at the end of the night! What a cool couple, and we’re so happy we got to work with them. Congratulations, friends!!
Heidi’s status? Apprehensive but happy.

IMG_1740.JPG
We left around 10, headed home, unloaded wedding gear, loaded up race gear, cuddled with Abbie for luck, then hit the open road. Brian drove, and I tried to sleep, but it was a little tricky. Stay tuned for the results of this crazy extravaganza. 🙂

Henry and Christina, and my last taper week

Hi, friends! I spent my last taper work keeping busy with all sorts of things, including a trip to Green Bay to work with Henry and Christina and capture their engagement portraits. We took advantage of a beautiful fall day along Baird Creek.

I love Henry’s bow tie. Too cute! Congratulations, friends. We’re looking forward to working with you again next year!
I stopped at my “local” fly shop, Tight Lines, and had my new fly line put on my birthday present to myself, my new seven weight reel.

IMG_4224.JPG

IMG_4220.JPG
I can’t wait to put that baby to good use!
I also went to dinner with my friend, Aaron. 🙂 it’s hard to get him to come out- combining grad school with someone who works in politics a month before an election, and I was lucky to snag an invite!

IMG_4225.JPG
I started working on a secret photo project with some beautiful products…

IMG_1687.JPG

IMG_1688.JPG
Did some very cliche photo work “out of the office” at Starbucks…

IMG_4227.JPG
Ate some of my pink applesauce…

IMG_4230.JPG
And went on my last run before the race with my Abbie pup.

IMG_4236.JPG

IMG_4244.JPG
It was all good preparation for my ridiculous weekend ahead… Stevens Point to Milwaukee to Chicago to Stevens Point to Wausau to Chicago to home.
That story is up next! 🙂

Noah’s Ark: Happy Birthday, Andy!

Happy 30th birthday, Andy!

IMG_0968.JPG

IMG_0967.JPG
Amanda, Andy, Brian and I spent the day celebrating at Noah’s Ark. It was amazing. Of course, I didn’t bring a camera, nor my phone, so I have no documentation, but I screamed so loud while riding Scorpion’s Tail that my throat hurts. 🙂
Brian and I went to Moosejaw for dinner…

IMG_3882.JPG

IMG_3881.JPG
…then walked around downtown. I got some cinnamon bears (my favorite!), and we got Abbie some delicious kind of puppy treat. I hurried home to give it to her.

IMG_4192.JPG
So cute. I’d lick my lips, too, if someone gave me a treat the length of my torso. 🙂
Random, but awesome… In my ten years of living in Stevens Point and loving Green Tea, I never noticed the languages on the receipt.

IMG_3886.JPG
I ran some errands on my bike, bought some flowers at the farmer’s market, then ran some more.

IMG_3893.JPG
Carmel is back! 🙂 Wyoming was amazing, but we’re all happy she’s back.
I celebrated Katrina’s birthday with more Great Northern Distilling and some friends in the conservation politics world, like Jen. It was awesome to see her! I always learn a lot when I talk with my friends who work for League of Conservation Voters.
Cute photo of the post, brought to you by Annie’s mac and cheese. Photobomb courtesy of Abbie.

Driftless adventures

Our first stop once we got back to Wisconsin was at Goose Island park.

IMG_1457.JPG
We put in, and headed out for a great paddle on the beautiful Mississippi River 🙂
We stayed pretty sheltered, since the park is full of beautiful little water mazes, and we spent a couple hours exploring.

IMG_1453.JPG

IMG_1450.JPG

IMG_1455.JPG

IMG_1456.JPG

IMG_1454.JPG
It was a fun day to be out- hot, humid, and a fair amount of current, but very little chop. After we loaded up, we dried off, hydrated, and headed down to Viroqua via a beautiful country drive. 30 minutes of solid Wisconsin. ❤
A late lunch at the co-op, and 15 more minutes in the car led to one of my favorite spots, Camp Creek.

IMG_1458.JPG
We only had a couple hours to play down there, but I caught a few fish.

IMG_1460.JPG
I also took my very first fish selfie.

IMG_1459.JPG
I peeled off those waders, sat by the car, and ate chocolate cake while drinking an IPA. Perfection.
We packed up and drove the three hours to home, with just enough energy to unload the car from the home-Amherst-Milwaukee-Winona-LaCrosse-Viroqua-home trip, and collapsed into bed.
My Monday morning involved getting my first crown. I didn’t realize that young people needed crowns sometimes, so I felt pretty old when they told me I needed one. In order to lighten the mood, I wore a crown to my crown appointment.

IMG_3816.JPG

IMG_3817.JPG
Yes, I love my crazy life.
As always, thanks for reading, friends!
See you soon!

My mentor, the record store, tacos, ice cream, and a fun TU trip to Milwaukee… and Mr. and Mrs. Phares!

I had my weekly meeting with Bill, my photo mentor. 🙂 We often go to Emy J’s, and if I have time, we go visit Randy at Radio Kaos.

IMG_3802.JPG

IMG_3801.JPG

IMG_3800.JPG
I love visiting actual record stores. There is something special about it, and Randy is awesome. I usually ride my bike for my errands, and this was no exception. I often take a little detour just so I can see one of my favorite smiley faces in the tar.

IMG_3805.JPG
In fact, when I was running this week, I found a new one…

IMG_4048.JPG
Too cute.
Friday afternoon, I headed back over to Central Waters to catch Tortuga Express, a food truck to be featured in Hoopla. If you’re not hungry now, you will be!

Brian and I ate those delicious tacos for dinner, and swung by King Cone for dessert. I knew about their delicious homemade ice cream from a photo shoot that I’d done a few months ago, and I wanted Brian to taste it for himself!

IMG_3814.JPG
We took our ice cream to go, and headed down to Milwaukee. We stayed with my TU friend, Henry, since we had our first family work day planned for Saturday morning!
It was incredibly adorable. We encouraged parents to come to the work day and bring along their kids- we had a coloring table with trout pictures, an entomology station, a fish shocking station, and a chance for the kids to help us put in spawning gravel. We had the DNR guys come on out to help, and the kids loved playing with the bugs! They got right in the stream and helped us use the kick nets. The kids seemed to love it, and I think the parents also learned a bit. 🙂

We grilled out for lunch, and Brian and I headed out quickly to get to Stacey and Ron’s Minnesota wedding. A few hours of driving, a stop for iced coffee, and we made it just in time for dinner and dancing!

IMG_1448.JPG
We met this beautiful couple through the small group at our church. We love these guys! 🙂 Robert was the officiant, and the rest of our small group (minus Pam) came to celebrate, too!

Our handsome small group men are what keeps the ladies coming back for more theology and bible study! Haha. 🙂
