Cara and Kyle, and my SUP!

Cara and Kyle are an absolutely adorable couple. They have been in several weddings that we’ve been lucky enough to shoot, so we’ve worked with them before, and their love for each other just shines through in the photos from their wedding. They had a warm, Appleton, WI wedding, and we stopped over on Lawrence’s campus for some of the photos.
True love + a summer day + a classic car? Timeless.

Congratulations, friends! 🙂 We had a wonderful time shooting and dancing at your wedding all night long.
I know I’ve mentioned this before, but this is the summer of the reel mower. I’ve been mowing our lawn this whole summer with our reel mower, and I love using it. It has taught me a lot of lessons, including that it’s important to slow down and pay attention to the little things… Like this guy!

I am gearing up for a new Heidi adventure- stand up paddleboarding (SUP). I took a SUP yoga class last summer, and I just loved it. This year, I said that if TU renewed my contract, I wanted to buy a paddleboard. Of course, I married an Oberstadt, so if something can be built, I can’t just buy it. Thus, a kit to build a wooden SUP arrived on my porch.

20140726-225055-82255382.jpg
I’m a really lucky girl, I know it! Brian has been hard at work on the board.

20140801-071753-26273263.jpg
I even got to help, I got to mix the wood flour with the epoxy and apply it using a pastry bag type device. You tell me: is this wood flour, or whole wheat? 😉

20140801-071827-26307200.jpg
I’m off to find another adventure. Thanks for reading, friends! 🙂

Jill and Breck, Father’s Day, and a night in Marinette county

Love. I love love.

Those of you who have met me know that I cry at every wedding I shoot. My friends usually make fun of me!
I cry harder at weddings when I know the couple, as with Jill and Breck. There was a several month period a couple years ago when Breck and Brian worked together, and they looked like twins, and even I mistook Breck for Brian from behind. 🙂 These two had a dream wedding in their hometown, Waupaca, Wisconsin. Take a peek!

Congratulations, Coopers! Thank you so much for choosing us to capture your wedding day. We had a blast with you!
PS the homebrew was awesome, Breck! Best. Wedding. Favors. Ever.
We love Waupaca, especially the cute little downtown area. We stopped over there and Brian finally got me the book I’ve been dreaming of…

20140726-103431-38071723.jpg
We also took my father-in-law, Greg, to Freckled Frogg for a Father’s Day lunch. Happy Father’s Day, Greg… Thank you for raising three incredible men.

Brian and I had a free Saturday, which rarely happens, so we went camping! I love water, as I’m sure you’ve noticed with all my fly fishing and kayaking, so I was excited to visit some of the waterfalls up in Marinette County. We only spent one night, but it was a great time.

We were totally exhausted when we arrived home on Saturday night, but I had enough time to wash my laundry and pack for my next adventure… Details to come. 🙂

NFAC photos, Talia and JJ, and summer favorites

I hopped over to the UWSP Fine Arts Center to do a photo shoot with the Music Department for their 2015 promotions. It was a humid day, and the bugs were crazy, but we had a great time!

I swapped out Brian as my paddling partner for an afternoon and went out with a professor of mine from UWSP- Susan 🙂 We had a great time- it’s fun to teach something to my teachers.

20140726-091128-33088203.jpg
As always, I was playing outside. Running, skating, riding my bike, and taking Abbie as often as possible.

Congratulations, Talia and JJ!
I’m off to keep trucking on photo editing and play in my garden. Garden updates to come! Thanks for reading, friends. 🙂

Relax? What’s that?

I got home from Pennsylvania just in time to celebrate Mother’s Day. Brian and I invited our moms over for a brunch- we had a waffle bar!
My mom is truly an amazing woman. She was a single mom for most of my life, and made some amazing sacrifices so I had every opportunity to develop into the woman than I am. I love you, Mom!

…and feeding watermelon to Abbie on hot days.

20140725-095300-35580440.jpg
I ran over to Green Bay to host an event sponsored by Green Bay TU that we called Women, Water, and Wine. It was an event for women to come and learn about the things that TU does in their community and hook them up with the local chapter. Tim Landwehr over at Tight Lines graciously donated his shop space for us. We had wine and cheese and it was a great time!

Thanksgiving, Black Friday, White Christmas

The day before Thanksgiving was the sweet courthouse wedding of Stephanie and Justin. I rarely have the chance to shoot a small, casual wedding, and I jumped at the chance! The officiant is a friend of the family, and everyone was so comfortable… Resulting in natural, relaxed smiles. After the ceremony, we hopped over to the 400 block in Wausau and popped in to Malarkey’s Pub for a quick drink!

Congratulations, Justin and Steph!
We hosted our annual Thanksgiving dinner with my mom, Gram and Grampie, and Jean and Mark.

It was pretty low-key this year, but I made my pies. It’s a tradition!

And of course, the annual post-dinner photo of me and Grampie on the couch 🙂

20140212-104202.jpg
Since Grampie can’t hear, we usually just sit there and not talk, but I brought down a dry erase board and we got to share a few laughs. He usually asks me about fly fishing… And this occasion didn’t disappoint! He wanted to know if I fish in waders or just dresses 🙂 here’s the honest answer…

20140212-104502.jpg
We sent everyone on their way, full and happy, and Amy came over for pie slice #2 and finalizing our Black Friday shopping game plan. It was successful…

We returned home in the wee hours of the morning, and I took a short nap to prepare for opening night of White Christmas. I was playing two roles- tap dancer, and pit orchestra musician. I ran between the two throughout the show. 🙂 Here’s a busy show weekend in photos…

Perpetually behind…

I’m behind, as always. I keep thinking that my life will slow down at some point and allow me to catch up.
I am starting to realize that in my line of work, with my personality, I will never again have a completely finished “to do” list.
Sigh… I still continue to make lists. My trusty Moleskins are full of scratched off lines of work, and dreams, and brainstorms, and doodles. Addresses and phone numbers are scribbled everywhere, and notes from everything to good fishing spots to packing lists for travel are stuck in between.
Here are a few more of my favorite things to share with you from last month.
Musical Thursdays at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art museum.

Congratulations, guys! My heart just warms with joy when I look at the love you have for each other.
I went to my first hearing of any kind at our state capitol in Madison. Trout Unlimited has a bill that will allow us to get license plates made that have TU on them, and a portion of the proceeds from purchasing these special plates comes back to TU. It was a very interesting experience- TU had about 45 people show up in support of the bill.

Amanda’s brother and sister-in-law were in town, so we all went out and lit up downtown! 🙂

I’m always amazed that I have any energy left after shooting a wedding, but if I’ve learned anything from the loss of TK and Rachael, it’s that friends are to be cherished. I never miss a chance to catch up!

Another whirlwind Milwaukee trip…

Milwaukee. A rainy, warm weekend. Erika and Chad. Wedding preparations in the historic Third Ward, a beautifully personalized ceremony at Lake Park Lutheran, and a regal reception at 1451 Renaissance Place. Enjoy!

We wrapped up the evening with the men and their cigars. I think it’s a sign that I did a good job when the groom offers to share his with me. 🙂 Thanks, Chad, and congratulations, friends!
We headed home Sunday morning, but only after a quick Starbucks stop, and a detour to honor our Olivia Act award winner, the Soba family… specifically, Alexis Soba.

20131017-200625.jpg
Alexis was a healthy, average 9-year old “girly girl,” or so her family thought. Last July, Alexis had three episodes with severe headaches and vomiting. The third time they went in to the doctor, the CT scan revealed that Alexis had a brain tumor, and her family’s worst nightmare began. Alexis was admitted to Children’s Hospital and had a full resection of the tumor… Leading to a diagnosis of Glioblastoma, brain cancer. She went through six weeks of radiation, chemo, countless platelet and blood transfusions… And she is now on the road to recovery.
We felt so blessed to be able to award her family a portrait session and document this beautiful stage in her recovery. We’re all rooting for you, Alexis!

Living the dream: babysitting, MKE Art Museum wedding, families, wood carving, food, and a girls’ weekend…

Sometimes I feel like I am really living the dream.
Babysitting for my friends’ totally sweet little babe is one of those times. Halle, you’re the cutest!

20131004-163351.jpg
We went for a walk and I saw this birch tree that creeped me the heck out. I usually run on this path, and I’m obviously so fast that I never saw this until I was on a leisurely walk.

20131004-163523.jpg
Mother Nature, you’re hilarious.
I can’t get enough of her cute face.

20131004-163639.jpg
After babysitting, B and I headed over to Lambeau courtesy of my sole sister, Nancy! B brought Devon to keep him company. First preseason game, we like to start the season as early as possible 🙂

I’m no longer surprised at anything that I see at Lambeau. Looking forward to a great Packer season!
A little work was done in my office to help me be more productive…

The weekend of August 17th, we headed down to Milwaukee to capture the absolutely gorgeous Milwaukee Art Museum wedding of Jen and Josh. The guys started their morning with golf, and as usual, the ladies started with manicures and hairstyles 🙂

We also loved Randy’s floral designs, as always. Simply stunning.
We slept soundly on Saturday night, then headed over to the work with the wildly adorable Koltz family on Sunday morning.

I closed out the month of August with a fantastic girls’ weekend up at my best friend, Nikki’s cabin. I’ve known this beautiful woman for a loooong time…

20131004-172143.jpg
We spent time on the pontoon, cruising around the lake, a hilly country run, bonfires, hot tubbing, a trip to the Amish store, tubing, good food, and lots of laughing.

Love, hops, the Twin Cities, a race, fitness, and something REALLY important.

So much is going on in my mind lately. I’m reeling!
I’ll start with some love… Katie and Royal had a beautiful late July wedding, complete with a line-up of classic cars 🙂

Katie’s hair was one of the most stunning bridal styles I’ve ever seen, and the parade of cars brought me back to a classier time, before wedding parties traveled by stretch Hummers.
The first week of August, I attended a banquet held by the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes. It recognized women of courage and character, and when I arrived, the ladies gave me the patch that we designed for Stream Girls.

20131003-115653.jpg
I cried a little tear of joy and pride when I saw this. So much work and planning went into this project, and seeing the final patch brought it all home 🙂
I “hopped” over to Fencerow Bounty, a hops farm up in Northern Wisconsin, near the Eau Claire River water basin, for a photo shoot. David is the farmer, and Mitchel does the brewing.

20131003-120442.jpg
It was a beautifully sunny day, and the guys were getting ready for their harvest party, a time where all their friends come over, eat, drink, be merry, and collect some hops.

I was educated on everything even remotely related to hops… did you know that you can throw a couple hop cones in a cheap beer ahem, Miller Lite and it will improve the taste?
We drank beer, and ate cheese made from the milk produced by the farm’s dairy cows.

These happy, friendly cows are on a strict diet of greens 🙂

20131003-120920.jpg
Thanks for having me out, guys! See you next year for the harvest party…
I used that cheese and beer to fuel me for my weekend trip to the Twin Cities to visit the Weisses and run. Pack up the dog and the husband…

20131003-121055.jpg

20131003-121113.jpg
We arrived Friday night, and Curtis and Mo greeted us at their beautiful new home. I took it pretty easy, since I was getting up pretty early on Saturday morning to run the Minnesota Half Marathon. It was sort of a spur-of-the moment race, since I rarely get a Saturday off, and I can’t pass up an opportunity to run a race.
Saturday morning arrived all warm and wonderful, and I headed to St. Paul for the start.

20131003-121346.jpg
Good morning, sleepy girl.

20131003-121427.jpg
This race was very unique in that it also had an inline skate half at the same time. I loved seeing those guys on the double out-and-back course.

20131003-121533.jpg
I made a new friend around mile four when I laughed at his shirt…

20131003-121613.jpg
So true. America, put down the drugs, and get off your ass. This guy actually had a small knee procedure a few months before the race, so he probably should have been resting, but we all know that runners have a few screws loose can be a little ridiculous.

20131003-121751.jpg

20131003-121817.jpg
It was a beautiful day for a race, though this course was pretty hilly. I wasn’t prepared for it at all! I was a very smart runner and thought, hey, if I add a minute or two per mile, I’ll finish this race feeling great, still be able to help my friends move, and won’t walk like a peg-legged toddler. I took it easy, at least when I could. I wanted to sprint down those hills!

20131003-122010.jpg
The uphills? Not so much.

20131003-122046.jpg
I spent the last three miles chatting with the 2:20 pacer who had no one running with him! The 2:30 pacer had on a sparkly skirt, I’m sure that’s why everyone else held back 😉 I strolled my way across that finish like I’d just walked back from the kitchen with a cold beer.

20131003-122209.jpg
Back to Curtis and Mo’s new home for a shower and breakfast, then a hard day of moving. I’ll skip right to the fun part- the housewarming ice cream cake 🙂

20131003-122326.jpg
I love seeing my Delta Omicron sisters and brothers. We’re a tight knit group. Thanks for the fabulous weekend, friends ❤
I returned home with a couple new wine racks from IKEA, and hung them next to my very first start-to-finish photoshop project. Yay!

20131003-122518.jpg
It’s kind of ironic, since I wasn’t old enough to drink wine when I did that project. 🙂
I’m flying through these fitness photos for you- but it’s safe to say that I spent quite a bit of time at Adventure 212 that week…

Feeling inspired to move yet?
Good.
Because I want you to be inspired when I tell you about my current stressor with the government shut down. I’m sure most of you know someone who isn’t working because of the shut down. Runners who train in national parks in big cities (I’m looking at you, DC) are SOL. My Olivia act winner, the Soba family, told me that some children with experimental cancer treatments aren’t receiving it during this shut down. (Remember this cutie?)

20131003-123349.jpg
Yeah, that really sucks.
Do you know what else sucks?
People who make their living as fishing guides losing access to their lakes and streams because they’re shut down. They don’t have unlimited days to reschedule.
The Wild Trout Symposium, which meets every three years with top scientists, fisheries managers, biologists, and anglers… had to be cancelled this year. Yes, let’s waste all that talent, and all the fabulous ideas that would have come out of that conference.
How about all the stream work nationwide that is halted, either due to holding back government funds, or newly restricted access? The field season is almost over, dear congressional buddies. This stuff can’t wait a year. Those locally contracted workers will go find work that is more “stable and consistent.” Growl, my claws are coming out.
Government websites are shut down, restricting access to important data about water, soil, etc… and don’t even get me started on the financial impact this has on all the communities that border national parks.
There is telemetry equipment used to track the movement of lake trout in Yellowstone that needs to be removed. Good luck sneaking in there.
And families with vacations ruined.
There isn’t anyone in this country that is unaffected by this shutdown. Please, Congress, get your shit together.
Since I can’t leave you on a note like that here’s some happy cows to brighten your day.

20131003-124428.jpg
Thanks for reading. Be awesome, friends. Do something amazing. ❤
