Fall, a bead class, and lots of love.

We’ve been capturing a lot of love lately… both from families and weddings.
Take a peek at this cute family. πŸ™‚

We really love autumn, and we try to highlight it with as many outdoor sessions as possible!
A while ago, my dance student, Marisha, gave me a gift certificate for a class at Blue Bead. I love beading, so this was so fun!

IMG_4179.JPG
I made a triple wrap bracelet that turned out beautifully. I’m so proud! I won’t post a photo because a few of my friends will be receiving these as Christmas gifts. πŸ™‚
Brian surprised me by upgrading my RAM. I came home and found this!

IMG_4193.JPG
I’m a lucky girl. πŸ™‚ the RAM came just in time for us to run up to Wausau to shoot the reception of Allie and Toby. These two had their wedding in Grand Marais, MN, and had a reception “at home” for their friends and family. Enjoy!

We came home on Friday night, after celebrating with those two, and plugged in our batteries, kicked up our feet, and rested for twelve hours before setting out to capture Sam and Spencer’s fall wedding. That’s up next!

My mom is engaged!

In some of the most exciting news of the season, I’m happy to announce that my momma is engaged. πŸ™‚
She’ll be marrying Bill Olson next June, and we couldn’t be more excited! I’ll be hanging out with them soon and taking some pictures, and I can’t wait to share them!
Speaking of engagement portraits, I was pretty excited to hang out with Lindsey and Derek a couple weeks ago. It was storming and the skies looked ominous, but we made the best of it, and the sun even came out at the end of our session! Take a peek at these cuties.

We can’t wait to shoot their wedding. How beautiful are they? πŸ™‚
Next up is the Klesmith family. We were lucky enough to shoot their engagement portraits and their wedding, and now here we are… Shooting their family portraits! Brace yourself, little Owen is too cute to handle.

The Klesmiths won a portrait package that we donated to a cancer benefit locally, so this shoot was extra special, as we were able to help our community. It wasn’t just a family photo shoot, it was also a special announcement…

Congratulations, Hannah and Mike! We’re so excited for you.
I’m blogging from the waiting room at Auto Select (Matt and Josh at the desk are awesome!) while I get new tires, but I’ll be back in my office soon, working on photos!
Thanks for reading, friends.

Lifest 2014

After our busy Fourth of July weekend, we kept right on chugging with our busy schedule.
I actually spent Monday- Wednesday filling in as the receptionist at my physical therapy office- Point Forward Physical Therapy. I made a great office girl!
I even had time for a few runs, including a Green Circle loop with Abbie.

20140804-223141-81101812.jpg
I packed up my gear, my pup, and my husband, and we headed over to shoot Lifest, a music festival in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
I don’t usually share too many photos from the event, but I take a lot of photos of people hanging out, camping, and generally being awesome. The evening concert crowds are usually around 20,000 people, and lots of people stay and camp for the week. I am a photo team supervisor for an awesome group of 14 photographers and videographers. Our team is called the Ninjagraphers.
The Beirl family and friends were there:

20140804-223610-81370909.jpg

20140804-223610-81370632.jpg
And Kenzie did some incredible spray paint art…

20140804-223652-81412572.jpg
Chris, my twin “our intern” was working, too!

20140804-223738-81458161.jpg
…and Jordy…

20140804-223756-81476581.jpg
…and a goat. Well, a whole petting zoo…

20140804-223820-81500021.jpg
And this. Father of the year? πŸ™‚

20140804-223843-81523287.jpg
John, my physical therapist, brought his oldest boys for Toby Mac.

20140804-223927-81567819.jpg
There were lots of concerts, lots of speakers, lots of signs, and lots of folding chairs. πŸ™‚

…and last, but not least, Wes, from my favorite late night comedy folks, Happy Fun Time.

20140804-224139-81699420.jpg
Lifest hosts a 5K run on Saturday morning, and I ran it with a stranger! I met her during the first mile and we chatted and prayed our way through the run. Pretty awesome.

20140804-224253-81773862.jpg
Jean brought me lots of healthy snacks, and the Fawley family took great care of me (and Brian, too!), as always.
I will leave you with some smiley balsamic vinegar, on the bottom of my salad plate.

20140804-224359-81839443.jpg
We came home from Lifest on Sunday afternoon, exhausted, and left for another adventure on Monday…

Wyoming.

Stay tuned for that story! Thanks for reading, friends.

Happy 65th Anniversary, Grammie and Grampie!

My grandparents are incredible. I know that I’m biased, but they are amazing. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year, so our family all got together and had a party. πŸ™‚
We started with a mass said in their honor, and then we moved back to their house (and the greenhouse) for the party.

How to appropriately heal from a stress fracture…

Fall is typically my favorite season for running. The cool weather is easier to tolerate, there’s lots of races, and beautiful scenery. I was able to log some beautiful miles while tapering for Madison Marathon.

20140123-103355.jpg

20140123-103440.jpg
Running with friends always makes the miles fly by. It’s easy to talk myself out of running if I am not feeling it, but I will never stand someone up for a planned run. Thanks for the miles, Mike!

20140123-103550.jpg
I had lunch dates with some of my favorite people… Nancy and Rickopedia…

20140123-103652.jpg
…and talked shop with Bill. πŸ™‚

20140123-103722.jpg
I had a shoot over at the School of Performing Arts… little kids with tiny violins are the cutest.

20140123-103805.jpg

20140123-103811.jpg

20140123-103816.jpg

20140123-103821.jpg
I love shoots that are related to music. The owners of this music school are colleagues of mine from my college days.
If you’re a new reader, you might be starting to get the idea that I have widely varying interests and activities. You are so right! To fill up some of my “free time,” I auditioned for and got a spot in the musical White Christmas, so I had some tap dance rehearsals. This was a really fun group of people to work with, and it was great to show Brian that yes, I actually know how to tap dance.
Really.
I’ll post pictures from the show soon! πŸ™‚
That busy schedule distracted me from the predictable taper crazies, and before I knew it, it was time to race. You can read my recap here, including Santa hydrating me at mile 23 and some of my favorite signs from the race course.
I finished the race in the morning, ate a ton of frozen yogurt, slept in the car on the way home, and headed straight to teach ballroom. I had tap dance rehearsal on Monday and Tuesday, and I was still feeling pretty sore, especially in my left foot. On Wednesday, I took Abbie for a walk in my house slippers, since my foot was still hurting. I was hoping my body just needed a good shakeout run and a stretch, so on Thursday morning, I laced up my shoes and took Abbie out to the river. As soon as I tied the bow on my left shoe, there was some serious pain. I was hoping it wasn’t anything too bad, and left anyway. Abbie was so happy to get out of the house… she is a typically active Jack Russell, and she doesn’t care if I’m resting post-marathon or not. She needs her exercise! πŸ™‚

20140123-104803.jpg

20140123-104829.jpg
To my dismay, I only made it out about a mile before I realized that something was seriously wrong with my foot. Two miles logged for the day, and worry creeped into my normally optimistic brain. I took my shoe off, but the pain remained, and seemed to resonate through my ankle, foot, and calf.
I called my doctor, hoping for a cancellation so I could get in, but there wasn’t anything available. I did what any insane runner would do- I went to urgent care. The pain wasn’t urgent, but my mental state was.

20140123-105346.jpg
They did an X-ray, but educated me that they usually can’t tell a stress fracture immediately on an X-ray, that it takes a couple weeks to show up. They did recommend that I see my regular doctor, and she recommended that I see an orthopedic specialist. And she gave me a special kind of shoe that didn’t hurt to be on my foot.

20140123-105315.jpg
The orthopedic doctor appointment wasn’t for a few days, and I was ordered to rest. So I crocheted a scarf. πŸ™‚

20140123-105449.jpg

20140123-105516.jpg
When I finally made it in to see the specialist, he pushed and prodded all the spots that hurt me. He thought that I had a stress fracture in one of the “chunky” bones in my ankle, and some irritated and inflamed nerves in my foot. He said that he could order a bone scan to be sure, but that his treatment recommendations would be the same, so I opted to save the money, and headed straight to physical therapy. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, do not run. And wear this big walking boot all the time.

20140123-105826.jpg
Please enjoy this montage of my foot situation for the past 8 weeks.

20140123-105954.jpg

20140123-110005.jpg

20140123-110017.jpg

20140123-110035.jpg
There was a small lapse in judgement, where I decided to still tap dance in the show. Turns out, tap dancing will prolong the healing of a stress fracture. It’s okay, I was wearing some of my favorite compression socks while doing it…

20140123-110133.jpg

20140123-110217.jpg

20140123-110235.jpg

20140123-110255.jpg
I went in for my seventh tally mark…

20140123-110329.jpg

20140123-110334.jpg
…and basically tried to rest. It’s hard to be such a busy, active girl with this boot, but I tried to make the most of it. πŸ™‚
I hung out with friends and made MΓΆbius strips.

20140123-110819.jpg
Went to coffee with Stef, and celebrated the liberation of my curly bangs…

20140123-111032.jpg

20140123-111048.jpg
Visited my mom and grammie…

20140123-111159.jpg
Had drinks with Nikki…

Witnessed the engagement of two of our good friends, Amanda and Andy!!!!

20140123-111346.jpg

20140123-111359.jpg
Had my mind blown about a Trout Museum that wasn’t…

20140123-111454.jpg
Went shopping with the Benishek ladies and my momma for hunter window weekend…

20140123-111957.jpg
Bought a hat with ears…

20140123-112048.jpg
…and taught some adorable little girls how to make scarves, too!

20140123-112126.jpg
If I’ve learned anything through this process, it’s that I need to be more patient. Healing takes time!
Up next? Thanksgiving, Black Friday shopping, a bunch of photo shoots, and photos from White Christmas. Thanks, friends πŸ™‚

Newsboys. Visiting Michigan. Running!

That wonderful, warm Florida weather made for quite an adjustment to Wisconsin fall. Luckily, I had a shoot with Lem and Tracy over in Green Bay… Newsboys, and their tour entourage.
20140121-105303.jpg20140121-105316.jpg20140121-105320.jpg20140121-105327.jpg20140121-105334.jpg20140121-105338.jpg20140121-105351.jpg20140121-105356.jpg20140121-105410.jpg20140121-105414.jpg20140121-105426.jpg20140121-105432.jpg
In concert photography, I never forget about the sound guy. They can make or break a show…
20140121-105507.jpg20140121-105512.jpg
Aww, Duncan. Great drummer, and often makes me giggle. Funny guy!
I don’t shoot a lot of concerts, and every time I do, I fall in love with the saturated colors.
I got home a little late from Green Bay, and fell sound asleep. All that travel was wearing me out! Of course, that didn’t stop me from waking up early, repacking my suitcase, and heading to Michigan with Brian for the weekend. We went to visit my aunt, Maureen, and her family at their country home in Bloomingdale.
20140121-110117.jpg
Can you tell we’re related? πŸ™‚
It was a beautiful weekend, and I was able to get in a few miles on the Kal-Haven trail. It was beautiful!!

The view from the porch. It’s a perfect spot for my post-run morning coffee.

20140121-110624.jpg
My bookworms… B and my amazing great aunt Eileen.

20140121-110709.jpg
It was an amazingly relaxing weekend filled with family, running, eating good food, and playing with a puppy. Who could ask for more? The seven hour drive home concluded just in time for me to get to dance lessons.

Stay tuned for the extremely exciting story of how a busy girl copes with a stress fracture…

My new BFF, Aurora…

A couple months ago, my friend Chad (a meteorologist) gave me a heads-up that the northern lights would be visible here. It was a cool night, and I wasn’t exactly sure I wanted to leave the comfort of my home, but I’m so glad I did. In fact, Brian and I went out to look, and I didn’t take my camera. I was going to try and take it in with the lenses of my eyes, not of my gear…
…but alas, I returned home, left Brian to his saxophone, and headed out, tripod in hand.
20131227-112825.jpg
I wanted to go to the interstate. I had this vision… Something like “Northern Lights meets Southbound Lights.”
20131227-112902.jpg
I only got in a little trouble.
20131227-112918.jpg
What a kind officer- he saw me standing on the bridge and was worried about me πŸ™‚ I reassured him… I’m fine!
I actually did have a cold, but one visit to Lor’s for a shoot of their delicious Vietnamese food, and I felt healed by the tea and the spices.
20131227-113032.jpg20131227-113037.jpg
A week later, and I was over in the thriving metropolis of Waupaca, WI. Little Fat Gretchen’s is an adorable little cafe, specializing in pies and really, all things delicious.
20131227-113139.jpg20131227-113146.jpg
Yes, I definitely ate this roasted beet panini.

I’d highly recommend stopping in for a visit! Seriously, though… have you ever been to a place with an “Eat” sign that wasn’t delicious? I didn’t think so. πŸ˜€
It was the peak of fall colors, so I was squeezing in family photos left and right! Here’s a few of my faves from the Meachen extended family’s shoot. The grandpa is a fly fisherman… as if I could love this sweet family any more than I already do.

Grandpas are precious. Here’s a phone photo of me with mine. I love this man.

That’s all for now, friends. Catch you later…

We wrapped up the evening with the men and their cigars. I think it’s a sign that I did a good job when the groom offers to share his with me. πŸ™‚ Thanks, Chad, and congratulations, friends!
We headed home Sunday morning, but only after a quick Starbucks stop, and a detour to honor our Olivia Act award winner, the Soba family… specifically, Alexis Soba.

20131017-200625.jpg
Alexis was a healthy, average 9-year old “girly girl,” or so her family thought. Last July, Alexis had three episodes with severe headaches and vomiting. The third time they went in to the doctor, the CT scan revealed that Alexis had a brain tumor, and her family’s worst nightmare began. Alexis was admitted to Children’s Hospital and had a full resection of the tumor… Leading to a diagnosis of Glioblastoma, brain cancer. She went through six weeks of radiation, chemo, countless platelet and blood transfusions… And she is now on the road to recovery.
We felt so blessed to be able to award her family a portrait session and document this beautiful stage in her recovery. We’re all rooting for you, Alexis!

Now that I’m crying all over again, I’m off to find some Kleenex.
More to come soon. Love you all.

Finished with antibiotics, Cat and Brett, family, tying flies, Talia and JJ, and lots of traveling.

I’m proud to say I have officially finished my 10 days on antibiotics. Now, the probiotics begin πŸ™‚
Brian and I had influenza, and mine paired up with a sinus infection to keep me pretty miserable and out-of-it for almost three weeks.
I’m almost disappointed to report that I’ve run a total of 6.25 miles this year. On a positive note, I finished off last year with a total of 670.4. That means $67.04 will come from out of our pocket in memory of Rachael. 2012 was a heck of year for my Miles for Melanoma schedule- Bock run, Oshkosh 1/2, Crazylegs, Lacrosse 5K, Madison Marathon, Grandma’s Marathon, Heart and Sole 5 miler, Lifest 5K, Fox Cities 1/2, Clam Chowdah Challenge, Noodleini 15K, and the Frostbite. Amen to that, and we miss you, Rachael.
One of my running resolutions for 2013 was is to run a higher weekly average- mostly meaning that I’d continue to run seriously between training for races. I will be happy to get going on that resolution as soon as I’m feeling 100%. In the meantime, I’ve been cross training and trying to keep in good spirits.

Since I’ve been “gone” for the better part of the month, here’s a little recap, dominated by photos πŸ™‚
We hosted a fun cocktail party, complete with a surprise guest from London, my beloved junior high crush, Jon Marx πŸ™‚ I didn’t think he could get any cuter, but he did… He now has an accent. Oh, dear.
