Being sick: Vimeo, Jill and Breck, meeting with Katrina

Hey, friends. I’m sick. Kind of a sniffling, whining, tea-drinking, curly monster.
In between shooting, watching the Packers destroy the rudest team ever, and teaching dance last night, I sat under a big blanket and watched vimeo videos. Mostly about water. And it’s been on my mind nonstop.
So I’ll start with two of my secret favorite places. Both have trout in them. And I’m sure that some of my TU faithful friends would recognize these places, but I’ll never tell.
The first dreamy spot…

20131007-120941.jpg
This place will probably disappear if Saratoga gets their cafo. If it doesn’t disappear, it will be forever changed. I’ll keep you all posted on the status of that project, or you can find it yourself at www.stoptherichfieldcafo.org.
The second spot isn’t really in danger of any kind, but it’s a perfect example of why a well-manicured, sparkly, sundress-loving girl will put on rubber pants and stand in cold water. I go to these places and take in as much beauty as I possibly can. Enjoy.

20131007-121338.jpg
And always know, if you want to come, I have a spare pair of waders and a map to get us there.
On to more beauty… Engagement pictures from the countryside. Ladies and gentlemen, Breck and Jill.

It was hot and humid for this shoot, so we wrapped it up in quite possibly the best way…

20131007-121731.jpg
I can’t wait to work with these guys! There was a time when Brian and Breck worked together and looked so much alike that people were constantly confusing them, including me! I gave Breck a hug from behind once, thinking it was Brian. Whoops. 🙂
When I came home from that shoot, I had a long awaited package at my doorstep. New skate wheels! It was way past overdue.

20131007-122052.jpg
If I could bring a Kleenex box, cough drops, and tea, I’d go skating this afternoon. I’m missing this beautiful fall day 😦
Speaking of beautiful days, Mat and I had perfect weather for our field trip last month. We took our state representative, Katrina Shankland, out to see some of the stream work that our TU chapter has done on the Tomorrow River.

It was a really fun time- I love sharing my knowledge about “our” section of this beautiful area, and Katrina is a wonderful person. It makes me feel good to know she’s representing me at the Capitol!

Have a wonderful day, friends.
I’m off to make some more tea. ::cough::

That was some kind of hiatus.

Hey, fans and friends. Sorry about that ridiculous break that I like to call a disorganized summer. Actually, I focused on spending more quality time with B and spent more time on the stream and playing outside. I can’t really apologize for that.
I left off promising to share some favorites from Hannah and Todd’s beautiful central Wisconsin wedding on June 22nd. ❤

Todd and Brian have been friends for quite some time- I believe they met in middle school, and they played in a rock band together when I first met Brian! I met Todd when he first came to college- we were in percussion studio together. It was so wonderful to spend this day with our friends.
Sadly, about a month after their wedding, a tornado destroyed much of their church. I’m so glad I captured her dress hanging in front of those beautiful windows- that entire wall collapsed in the storm.
Even though it rained on their wedding day, we were able to spend some time playing outside and truly celebrated this new beginning with Mr. and Mrs. Truesdale! 🙂
Another fantastic June project of mine is something I developed this past winter, that I’ve briefly mentioned in the past. When our Wisconsin State Council of Trout Unlimited asked me to take on the role of chair for their brand-new Women’s Initiatives committee, I agreed, even though I had no idea how to start. Among the many ideas that I had while brainstorming, I was thinking of how I could plant the seed in the minds of girls, so they would grow up informed and connected to the resource. The biggest source of girls in our country? Girl Scouts! There are 3.2 million Girl Scouts in our country, and almost a million of those are adult volunteers. That sounded like a perfect place to start, so I called up my long-time pom-squad girlfriend from junior high, Melissa, since she works for the Girl Scouts.
I started asking questions about water badges, and I contacted TU national’s staff to see what kind of youth resources that were available for me. To make a long story short, the TU staff (Bryan, Franklin, Rochelle) and I developed a curriculum for a three day event, and Stream Girls was born. We took the girls out to a stream for a guided stream walk, entomology, fly tying, casting, and fishing. I have big plans for the growth of this program, as it is a perfect opportunity to create a new generation of informed, educated female citizens… And they’re darn adorable. See for yourself.

One memorable trip at a time!

Hi, friends!
I apologize for the delay in this post, but it turns out that if you play hooky from work for a week and a half, you come home to mounds of catch-up work!
A few weeks ago, I drive down to Milwaukee to check out the venues of my two MKE wedding couples: Erika and Chad, and Jen and Josh.

20130529-142600.jpg

20130529-142607.jpg
I also stopped by at the Southeastern Wisconsin Trout Unlimited meeting to visit my friends.

20130529-142750.jpg

20130529-142812.jpg
I stayed near the MKE airport, and left my car there for the park and fly. Eleven day trip with shooting, running, and fishing? My suitcase weighed 48 pounds. 🙂
My first evening in DC, I worked with Graham Breedlove to do some promotional photos in Georgetown. Take a peek at a few of my favorites!

20130529-143210.jpg

20130529-143220.jpg
We went to dinner at a place called Tackle Box, and finished up with some Georgetown Cupcake. Yum!

20130529-143332.jpg

20130529-143342.jpg
Thanks for the fun, Graham (and family!) I stayed at their beautiful home in Arlington, then picked up my rental car for day number two of fun- driving to Maryland to see Megan and Bobby!

20130529-143528.jpg
We walked all around Frederick taking in the sights…

20130529-143656.jpg

20130529-143709.jpg
…drinking coffee…

20130529-143738.jpg

20130529-143749.jpg
…eating good food…

20130529-143824.jpg
…and enjoying our friendship!

20130529-143852.jpg
Both my friends had to work on Friday, so I went to Baltimore to explore Inner Harbor.

20130529-144002.jpg

20130529-144010.jpg

20130529-144025.jpg
I was walking by the water, enjoying the sights and the ocean-y air, and guess who ran past me?

20130529-144116.jpg
Matt! What an awesome surprise. He was in Baltimore for a conference, and just happened to be out running while I was strolling. How cool!
It was more humid out there in Maryland. I was curly.

20130529-144242.jpg

20130529-144258.jpg
On Saturday, M & B took me to Capitol Hill to visit the famous The Sweet Lobby. If you know me in person, or have been reading for a while, you know that I LOVE fancy cupcakes. This place was amazing.

20130529-144424.jpg

20130529-144435.jpg

20130529-144456.jpg
We took the scenic route home…

20130529-144520.jpg

20130529-144531.jpg
…then headed to the expo to pick up our race gear. The first (and main!) reason that I took this trip was to run with Megan on her very first half marathon! I chose a fun option called the Nut Job. It is a series of two races, twelve hours apart. A quick, hilly 5K on Saturday night, and a long hilly half marathon on Sunday morning.
Saturday’s 5K was basically 1.5 miles downhill, then the turn around, and 1.5 miles back up that darn hill. It made me wish I had trained on some hills. Whoops. Those Maryland people take their hills seriously! Turns out, West Virginians do, too. More on that later.
Before the 5K:

20130529-150526.jpg
During the 5K:

20130529-150550.jpg
And after the 5K.

20130529-150614.jpg
It was much warmer weather than I had been used to, but sweating felt good. 🙂
Also noteworthy: they provided us with men’s nuts post-race. Ha. My time was 29:18. In my mind, that was a great warmup run for the next day’s half.

20130529-150709.jpg
I took the world’s fastest shower, then we ran over to Bobby’s sister’s house for dinner with Bobby’s family. Of course, I was so distracted by the most delicious paleo dinner ever, that I didn’t take any photos of the family or the food. Wonderful burgers, sweet potato fries, sautéed summer squash, and all sorts of other delicious stuff. I did, however, snap a photo of this gem: salted caramel.

20130529-150929.jpg
We didn’t stay too late, and headed back for a full evening of resting and relaxing. Basically, I fell asleep as soon as we arrived back at M & B’s apartment. 🙂
Sunday morning arrived with excitement! One of my favorite things about running with “new” runners is that I love sharing in the excitement of their first race, or new PDR, or first medal! My pre-race breakfast was pretty standard- Greek yogurt and berries.

20130529-151150.jpg
Bobby was an excellent chauffeur for the morning- he got a parking spot very close to the start/finish, so we could all stay together. There was a hot air balloon near the start- what a cool way to begin a race morning 🙂

20130529-151310.jpg

20130529-151320.jpg

20130529-151335.jpg
The course was beautiful with some hills and gorgeous scenery! I even recognized some areas from my days exploring downtown!

20130529-151500.jpg

20130529-151516.jpg

20130529-151527.jpg
This guy was holding a sign- “Offical Race Liar.”

20130529-151601.jpg
He was probably around mile 7 or 8, on a long uphill. Here are some of the things that came out of his megaphone…
-“It’s all downhill from here!”
-“You’re almost done!”
-“Finally! Someone who looks great in spandex!”
Hilarious. That guy was great.

20130529-151929.jpg

20130529-152352.jpg
THAT’S a giant sign.
They had military men and women giving us our medals at the end. How cool!

20130529-152451.jpg
I came in relaxed with a time of 2:13:12, then looped back to cheer for Megan. While I was waiting for her to come through the last half mile, I saw an incredibly inspirational man in a wheelchair. He was struggling to make it up the gravel incline to the track. He didn’t want help from anyone, so all the runners around him started cheering and encouraging even louder than normal. When he finally made it up the incline, I cried happy tears for him.
Megan came through the chute not long after my wheelchair guy, and I shouted my little buns off. And cried some more. And I’m crying writing this. Gosh, runners are inspirational!! Love you, Megan.

20130529-152627.jpg

20130529-152638.jpg

20130529-152650.jpg

20130529-152706.jpg
We headed back to M & B’s place for brunch with their families. I took a shower and got changed for mass, then we all ate. Of course, I forgot to take photos of this family. Jeez. I was distracted by the dinosaur eggs they were feeding me! Don’t know what they are? Check it out.
We went to mass at a church that is 250 years old! Well, not the building, but the group of people that have been going. The church is beautiful!

20130529-153107.jpg
And we followed up mass with Rita’s. Being a Midwestern girl, I didn’t know what this chain is all about. Turns out, it’s about mixing delicious fresh Italian ice with creamy custard. Yum!

20130529-153214.jpg

20130529-153225.jpg
After that awesome day, I packed up my stuff and got ready to head to West Virginia.
One trip at a time, folks! Stay tuned for fishing in WV, working up in Pembine, and a wedding in Arizona. 🙂

Friends, love, and collaborations.

Hey, y’all. I’ve had too much fun in the last couple weeks. I’ve tried to squeeze in all of my favorite things. Here’s a recap, heavy on the photos. 🙂
I went for a nasty, slushy, slippery run with George.

20130224-202649.jpg
Twinsies.

20130224-202717.jpg
I had an amazing lunch with Nancy and Rickopedia. Two wonderfully kind people, two intelligently training athletes. Whenever I catch up with them, I leave 1) smiling, and 2) smarter. Or at least with a good running head screwed on my shoulders.

20130224-202848.jpg
Rainbow trout pedicure… yes, I invented it.

20130224-202924.jpg

Happy Valentine’s Day to me! Brian made my day by grilling out for dinner and bringing my flowers and my favorite kinds of dark chocolate.

I did a photo shoot at Bistro 212 for their Valentine’s Dinner. Love the owners, love the chef, love the food. Here’s a few of my favorites.

I got my car back, too. 🙂 no picture, just pure happiness over here. Two weeks without it really reminded me of how blessed I am to have a vehicle of my own.
One more shoot over at 212, with some of their trainers and a TRX demo.

I went to Katrina Shankland’s public office hours to ask questions and learn more about the mining bill currently in our state.

I went up to Wausau to meet my friend, Melissa. She works for the Girl Scouts, and I’m working on a top-secret super-awesome collaboration between GSA and Trout Unlimited.

We got a new mattress! Since it was being delivered while B was at work, we moved our old mattress and boxspring into the living room Thursday night, so I could haul it outside by myself. It was strange sleeping on my bed, but in the living room. I loved sleeping next to my marimba.

I went to a wonderful concert over at Scaraboccio Art Museum today: Faure and John Cage, sung by Susan Bender. It was wonderful- one of those concerts that reminds me how blessed I am to be able to appreciate and understand truly good music.

Fishing on my mind.

Hey, friends! It’s been a great week up here. I was able to get in a few great snowy runs, instead of being on the treadmill.

It was warm enough for 3/4 length pants one day. Days like that make my spring fever much worse!
One of the perks of this cold weather is the ice fishing. I went out with my friend, Matt, and caught some of my biggest fish yet. Those pike just smile so much and have such amazing teeth.

I can operate that auger all by myself. In fact, I came home smelling like fish and gasoline. Brian’s a lucky guy! 🙂
Earlier this week, the Fly Fishing Film tour came through town. Well, came through DePere. I didn’t have a ticket (they sold out quickly!), but Matt had to work, so he gave me his. A bunch of guys from our chapter of TU headed over for the show. To be honest, it was one of those times that I was glad to be one of the few women- there was no line for the restroom! 🙂 Winter events like that make me excited for fly fishing this spring.
My new glasses came in this week, too. I like to call this look nerdy-chic.

20130210-172646.jpg
Yesterday, our TU chapter hosted a fly-tying workshop. We even had a few girls come out!

20130210-172859.jpg
Way to go, ladies. I hope they find some hungry bass with those pink flies 🙂
Brian’s been spending every spare moment working on my car. It’s still giving us a load of trouble! I spent my morning in yoga pants, with my head in here…

20130210-173013.jpg
I don’t know how he works on this all the time. I guess it’s safe to say I’m not a gear head.
Please send prayers and positive energy our way so I can have my car back soon! 🙂

Bad news first, or good news?

Hey, friends.
It’s been a heck of a long week over here.
My water pump and thermostat went out in my Stratus, so we’re down to one car until we can come up with a grand to have it repaired 😦 If you see me cruising around in Brian’s rusty blue Subaru with a dent in the front from a small deer collision, please give me a wave and send some positive vibes our way 🙂 Also, if you’re in Point and in need of a car shop, go to Auto Select. I love the one on Hwy 10- they are so nice and provide really good service.
Did you know that a car can overheat, even when it’s -4 degrees outside?

20130125-154242.jpg
I also had a dentist appointment that didn’t go quite as planned- there was a problem with how my body was processing the numbing shots, so it was a very painful filling. I was supposed to have two cavities filled, but I postponed the second one until next month. Ouch!

20130125-154333.jpg
Our back door is frozen shut, so we have to carry Abbie out the front door to take her out.

20130125-154415.jpg
And last but not least in my list of depressing news, yesterday was the one year anniversary of losing Rachael. I’ve been truly amazed at how much God can heal a broken heart in a year’s time…

20130125-154714.jpg
I certainly miss her smile and positive attitude. We were kindred spirits, like that.
In positive news, I used my cast iron skillet (thanks, Jean!) for the first time to make cornbread!

20130125-154745.jpg
I’ve also been able to get our humidity in the house up to a comfortable level, leading to some crazy curls…

20130125-154858.jpg
I had the Safelite guy come out and take care of the chip in my windshield. Yay!

20130125-155002.jpg

20130125-155010.jpg
Our guest speaker for our Trout Unlimited meeting this month was James Card. He spoke last night about his guiding experience in South Korea and he showed us amazing pictures of the different types of fish! My favorite was this fish called a cherry trout, with cute little stripes!

20130125-155312.jpg
I got my hands on the sheet music for Rhythm Song, and I’m relearning it. It’s like reuniting with an old friend. I tore my hands open already on those mallets. Good memories!

20130125-160545.jpg
I zipped over to Adventure 212 this morning for a photo shoot with their new chef in the bistro. Delicious food and good company- I had a great time!

20130125-155422.jpg

20130125-155427.jpg
Yeah, I ate that cupcake. Coconut. Delicious.
Brian and I are just getting ready to head over to O’so for their special bottled release of Bourbon Barrel Night Train. I’m in heaven. Catch you later!

Finished with antibiotics, Cat and Brett, family, tying flies, Talia and JJ, and lots of traveling.

I’m proud to say I have officially finished my 10 days on antibiotics. Now, the probiotics begin 🙂
Brian and I had influenza, and mine paired up with a sinus infection to keep me pretty miserable and out-of-it for almost three weeks.
I’m almost disappointed to report that I’ve run a total of 6.25 miles this year. On a positive note, I finished off last year with a total of 670.4. That means $67.04 will come from out of our pocket in memory of Rachael. 2012 was a heck of year for my Miles for Melanoma schedule- Bock run, Oshkosh 1/2, Crazylegs, Lacrosse 5K, Madison Marathon, Grandma’s Marathon, Heart and Sole 5 miler, Lifest 5K, Fox Cities 1/2, Clam Chowdah Challenge, Noodleini 15K, and the Frostbite. Amen to that, and we miss you, Rachael.
One of my running resolutions for 2013 was is to run a higher weekly average- mostly meaning that I’d continue to run seriously between training for races. I will be happy to get going on that resolution as soon as I’m feeling 100%. In the meantime, I’ve been cross training and trying to keep in good spirits.

Since I’ve been “gone” for the better part of the month, here’s a little recap, dominated by photos 🙂
We hosted a fun cocktail party, complete with a surprise guest from London, my beloved junior high crush, Jon Marx 🙂 I didn’t think he could get any cuter, but he did… He now has an accent. Oh, dear.

Hello, strangers.

Hello, strangers!
I apologize for temporarily being MIA. Here in central Wisconsin, the fall colors have been at their peak, which means I am in the busiest photo season of the year!
Since I left you last time, Brian and I enjoyed a sushi date night.

We ate octopus for the first time! It was very chewy. All that rice was like carb-loading for Ashlee and Nick’s Plover wedding.

Sunday was a wonderful day to meet our new neighbor.

Beautiful coloring, but I won’t be inviting her to a block party anytime soon.
Monday morning brought a pumpkin/kale smoothie and some fun photos of my friend, Randy. He owns Radio Kaos… You know I’m a fan.

Tuesday was full of photo editing and the engagement portraits of Erika and Chad. Their wedding will be in Milwaukee, and they live in Appleton, but they took the day off to come visit us here in Stevens Point. We took them to Schmeekle Reserve, played around on campus, walked downtown, then finished up at O’so Brewing Company.

20121009-113450.jpg
On Wednesday, I had a really fun shoot at a spa event over at Adventure 212. I haven’t edited those photos yet- but here’s an iPhone photo of the double use of some of our lighting.

20121009-113600.jpg
On Thursday, I worked in our second bedroom and took several big storage containers to our storage unit. That is time-consuming work! I also went to my monthly TU board meeting and made mental notes for winter fishing projects. I’m going to do some revamping of our chapter website and tie more flies of my own. 🙂
Friday was a long run day. It was a very windy day, and it was a tough 20 mile run.
I encountered fresh tar…

Their ceremony was at St. Anne’s in Wausau, with photos at Leigh Yawkey and the 400 block. Their gorgeous reception was at Jefferson Street Inn, with some of the most beautiful floral work I’ve ever seen from Randy at Evolutions in Design. Simply incredible. I volunteered with Karen at Girl Scout camp, so I’ve known this beautiful bride for 15 years! Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Hansen!
We left their reception and headed straight to the end of the reception of our friends, Mary and Joe. Remember these guys? I did their engagement portraits earlier this year…

What a good looking group. Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Nowinski!
We got home around 1:30 and peeled ourselves out of bed Sunday morning to shoot morning light engagement photos of Jen and Josh up in Wausau. They are a gorgeous couple and we’re looking forward to their beautiful wedding at the Milwaukee Art Museum.

I tried to catch up on photo work and housework yesterday before heading out with my friend and fellow TU board member, Matt. He took me out to all the work sites of our chapter’s stream restoration projects. I am planning on doing some work with our projects, showing before-during-after shots as the projects move along, and I wanted to get some photos before winter sets in. Here’s a few of my favorites.

Our stream projects are taking wide, shallow, warm sections of the stream that have been washed out by erosion and other causes and narrowing them. Trout cannot live or breed in warm water, so they need narrow, cold water with places to hide. We don’t create habitat where it doesn’t belong, but we try to repair and restore the areas that have been damaged.
I’m off to finish the wedding of Rachel and Alex and dig into my gaggle of engagement images. I can’t wait for Brian to come home so we can go for a rainy day run followed by a warm bowl of homemade chili. 🙂

…and so much more. I am suffering from a post- marathon cold, so I’ve been drinking a lot of tea, sitting in the sauna, and eating a lot of garlic. Sorry, Brian!
On Thursday, we headed out east of town with a few of my TU friends to check out the stream restoration projects that our chapter has in the works on the Tomorrow River. Our future president brought his little girl along for her first kayak ride. 🙂

After that, we headed over to a little lake for some fishing. 🙂

After that long day, Brian crashed pretty hard. My cold was bothering me, so we were both happy to be home.

I logged a few slow miles this week, and one of the highlights was finding a little duck couple in my neighbor’s yard. 🙂

Our weekend was filled with quite a bit of excitement. It started Friday night, with a Zumbathon. This was quite a fun gig! Check out the content of the dance party…

I came home from that photo shoot and worked on packing my equipment for the Northwoods. We woke up Saturday morning, packed up the car, and headed to where the freeway ends.

We had the incredible opportunity to shoot Kyt and Nick’s wedding up near the Michigan border. I’ve known Kyt for almost two decades, and it was wonderful to spend the day with her and see our friends all in one place!

Their ceremony took place on a dock floating in the middle of the lake. 🙂

…and they jumped in as the finale!

Many congratulations to Kyt and Nick! It was wonderful to see your family again, and of course- our friends from Riverside Elementary, DCE Jr and Sr High, and UWSP. 🙂
Brian and I drove south to Minocqua to spend the night, and we enjoyed our Sunday together. I went for a run on the Hiawatha trail.

Historical and beautiful- it was the perfect way to shake out on a vacation-y morning.

After a quick shower and stop for coffee, we walked around downtown and stopped at a craft show at Torpe park. We bought candy at Dan’s…

…gummy candy is my favorite! I especially love those “fruit” slices.
We went to lunch at an awesome BBQ joint.

It’s one block off the main drag, and worth every penny. The food was good, the people were good, and the ambiance was awesome. I love anything served to me on butcher paper 🙂

After that awesome meal, we headed out for a couple hours of paddling/fishing/swimming.

Balancing on top of a kayak like mine is harder than it looks- right side up OR upside down!

We got on the road just in time to catch some of the “returning home” traffic. We were in a hurry to get back for Mary and Joe’s engagement portraits! Brian and I went to college with Mary. She’s our DO sister! Congratulations, friends. 😀 I tried to capture a little of Joe’s personality in my shots. Can you tell?

After a full day of fresh air, we crashed hard. I only woke up in the night to scratch my 863684894789354636793 mosquito bites. I must have had high blood sugar after all those gummy candies. Whoops.
I’ll have to fill you in on today later. 🙂 I had a lot of photo editing, cleaning and unpacking, router shopping, and some adorable family portraits. Whew! I’m off to bed.
