Jill and Breck, Father’s Day, and a night in Marinette county

Love. I love love.

Those of you who have met me know that I cry at every wedding I shoot. My friends usually make fun of me!
I cry harder at weddings when I know the couple, as with Jill and Breck. There was a several month period a couple years ago when Breck and Brian worked together, and they looked like twins, and even I mistook Breck for Brian from behind. 🙂 These two had a dream wedding in their hometown, Waupaca, Wisconsin. Take a peek!

Congratulations, Coopers! Thank you so much for choosing us to capture your wedding day. We had a blast with you!
PS the homebrew was awesome, Breck! Best. Wedding. Favors. Ever.
We love Waupaca, especially the cute little downtown area. We stopped over there and Brian finally got me the book I’ve been dreaming of…

We also took my father-in-law, Greg, to Freckled Frogg for a Father’s Day lunch. Happy Father’s Day, Greg… Thank you for raising three incredible men.

Brian and I had a free Saturday, which rarely happens, so we went camping! I love water, as I’m sure you’ve noticed with all my fly fishing and kayaking, so I was excited to visit some of the waterfalls up in Marinette County. We only spent one night, but it was a great time.

We were totally exhausted when we arrived home on Saturday night, but I had enough time to wash my laundry and pack for my next adventure… Details to come. 🙂

Heidi and the Very Busy Weekend

I started my crazy weekend by heading down to the driftless area of Wisconsin- specifically Viroqua, for a Wisconsin TU State Council meeting. All of these meetings are scheduled in a way that makes fishing in fabulous places a reality. I was able to get a few casts in on the Kickapoo with Doug on Friday evening…

20140725-191552-69352320.jpg
I participated in an exciting meeting with my favorite WITU guys…

Bill Heart spoiled me with some maple syrup…

20140725-191739-69459839.jpg
And Aaron and I went out to Camp Creek and fished after the meeting. Yes, I out fished him 😉

This fishing trip was actually the first time that I ever lost track of time out on the stream. I’ve surely come a long way. 🙂 I sped out of the driftless and popped in at Ashley’s bachelorette party in the Wisconsin Dells. I couldn’t stay long, since I had to run home and make pasta salad for 60 people for my sister-in-law, Megan, as we were hosting a big baby shower for her the next day. I came home, and Brian had already cooked all my pasta, so I only needed to assemble.
Oh… and pack for the Green Bay half marathon that I foolishly signed up for Sunday morning between that meeting and the baby shower.
I slept a few hours, and Brian loaded me in the car with all my race gear and baby shower stuff, plus shower accessories and a change of clothes. I met up with Carmel, and we ran the race together.

20140727-104905-38945283.jpg
It was perfect weather- we were a little chilly at the start, but we warmed up once we got moving.
This is what you missed for 12.5 miles…

It was an awesome race with fantastic company, and I cruised across the finish line at 2:11:47. Brian was waiting very near the finish line with the car running, and we sped off to New London, so I could shower at my mother-in-love’s house. I went from sweaty to ready in no time, and we headed off to the party. It was beautifully planned by the sisters and mothers and aunts of the momma-to-be, and Megan was just glowing.

As always, thanks for reading, friends.

Relax? What’s that?

I got home from Pennsylvania just in time to celebrate Mother’s Day. Brian and I invited our moms over for a brunch- we had a waffle bar!
My mom is truly an amazing woman. She was a single mom for most of my life, and made some amazing sacrifices so I had every opportunity to develop into the woman than I am. I love you, Mom!

I ran over to Green Bay to host an event sponsored by Green Bay TU that we called Women, Water, and Wine. It was an event for women to come and learn about the things that TU does in their community and hook them up with the local chapter. Tim Landwehr over at Tight Lines graciously donated his shop space for us. We had wine and cheese and it was a great time!

Travel…

I’m starting to feel a little travel weary. It’s hard to be on the road so much!
I had a trip to State College, Pennsylvania for the TU Mid-Atlantic regional meeting. My trip got off to a rocky start- as I was carrying my suitcase out to the limo my car, I opened the door over my toe, cracking the nail and bleeding all over. My poor polka dot pedicure! 😦

20140725-090902-32942495.jpg
Luckily, I got everything cleaned up and made it to the airport in time, and I had good reading material for the flight.

20140725-091001-33001954.jpg
I learned a couple things about Pennsylvania that I didn’t notice on my trip in February, and one of those things is that fries come on every salad. How crazy! It pretty much takes all my self control to order the salad when I want a burger, and I have almost no self control to take the fries off my salad when it arrives all delicious and fried. 🙂

20140725-091158-33118263.jpg
My first run out there was a couple miles uphill, then turning around and trying not to fall as I flew down the hill.

I loved it. Hills are a great challenge to this Wisconsin Central Sands girl.
The meeting itself was great. There was such a good exchange of ideas, as always! My “Women in TU” meeting had great attendance, and I had the chance to catch up with TU friends and coworkers that I don’t see very often.

I consider myself lucky that I had the opportunity to fish two different spots on Spring Creek. I caught fish both times! I was interested in learning about New Zealand mud snails. Have you ever seen them?

20140725-091855-33535624.jpg
The more that I fish, the more I appreciate the company that I keep while I’m out there. Thank you so much, Mid-Atlantic people, for showing me such a good time!

The flight home was one of my favorites- the airport in State College is small enough that we get to walk out on the concrete and board the plane via those little steps. I feel like a celebrity when I do that. I want to turn around and wave to the crowd like when the President steps out of Air Force One. 🙂

20140725-092816-34096978.jpg
They also served my absolutely favorite Biscoff cookies.

I returned home a happy and tired Heidi!
Thanks for hanging with me. 🙂

Meetings, so many meetings.

Part of my new job with TU involves traveling to regional meetings, meeting our members, and having some really awesome discussions about getting women involved and active in TU. Here’s a few of my favorite memories so far:
Reno.
I bought a new luggage tag, ran into friends in Madison before I flew out, and flew into an airport with cutthroat trout in the tile floor. I ran by myself and also with my friend, Steve Moyer, in terrifying interesting areas, with power poles in the middle of the sidewalk, along the Truckee river, stayed in a big hotel/casino/spa/resort (The Atlantis), drank some weird things at a hipster bar, and gambled for the first time.

I loved an early taste of spring. I ran downtown, did yoga in the grass, ate a Moonpie and drank a Nehi soda, and bought cowboy boots. I listened to a bluegrass band, ate grits, met a ton of great people, and sat in meetings at a really cool venue- The Dillard House.

I learned about stream restoration techniques, talked with members about engaging our women volunteers, fished with my friend, Pete, and his pup, Teak. I hung out with nerdy staff (Brennan!), bonded with some of my favorite Wisconsin TU people, and came home to a crazy snowstorm.

I stayed at the Garland Resort, ran on golf courses, met some incredible female leaders (and men, too!) within TU, hung out with my WITU guys, and got closer with our TU staff. I went to a fly fishing historical museum, and found some Weber reels made here, in Stevens Point! I caught my first Michigan fish, and was welcomed home to Wisconsin with a view of the Capitol from the plane and a hot cup of coffee.

Idaho

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to head over to Idaho for some photo work in December. It was a mountain-y, amazing experience. 🙂 I love that a big part of my job involves playing outside.
Check it out.

I wore that bear hat when I was on the Bear River, and I liked it so much I kept it on most of the trip!
One of the cities that I stayed in was a little place called Lava Hot Springs. There were little private hot tubs, both indoor and outdoor, that were filled with continually flowing water from the hot springs in the river. It was pretty cool to sit in them!

I was lucky enough to have my friend, Chris, take me out to (the?) Henry’s Fork and help me catch some fish!
I caught a couple different kinds, the above Rainbow Trout (on my new Tenkara rod), and a really special (and purple!) Bonneville Cutthroat Trout (on the Bear). I was so excited when I caught that fish that I fell in the water. 🙂 I can’t explain the feeling that comes when I can figure out where the fish are, use the right fly, and cast to the fish in a way that allows me, just for a second, to take in the beauty of a native fish that belongs in that water. A kind of fish that has been there for longer than any of us have been here. It’s just special. Plus, that fish was purple. With orange. ❤

20140330-194804.jpg
One of my favorite parts about traveling is learning. Every city is different, each state is special. It is amazing how all these waters can simultaneously be the same and unique. Healing, for sure… those hot springs, quite literally. Special thanks to Chris for shooting a few of me in my element, and putting me on a few fish. 🙂
It was a sweet trip, only slightly tarnished by a major shutdown of the SLC airport due to a crazy snowstorm, and an extra day and a half stuck alone in a hotel room topped off by flying standby home with my foot in that walking boot…
but I made it home in time to snuggle with B, bake my Christmas cookies, and finish all my shopping.
Sometimes I wonder why I’m blessed with some of these amazing opportunities… But I just give thanks, and enjoy, and share the results with you!
Have a good one, friends. Up next? Reno and Georgia. 🙂

Newsboys. Visiting Michigan. Running!

That wonderful, warm Florida weather made for quite an adjustment to Wisconsin fall. Luckily, I had a shoot with Lem and Tracy over in Green Bay… Newsboys, and their tour entourage.

In concert photography, I never forget about the sound guy. They can make or break a show…

Aww, Duncan. Great drummer, and often makes me giggle. Funny guy!
I don’t shoot a lot of concerts, and every time I do, I fall in love with the saturated colors.
I got home a little late from Green Bay, and fell sound asleep. All that travel was wearing me out! Of course, that didn’t stop me from waking up early, repacking my suitcase, and heading to Michigan with Brian for the weekend. We went to visit my aunt, Maureen, and her family at their country home in Bloomingdale.

Can you tell we’re related? 🙂
It was a beautiful weekend, and I was able to get in a few miles on the Kal-Haven trail. It was beautiful!!

It was an amazingly relaxing weekend filled with family, running, eating good food, and playing with a puppy. Who could ask for more? The seven hour drive home concluded just in time for me to get to dance lessons.

Stay tuned for the extremely exciting story of how a busy girl copes with a stress fracture…

Captiva and Sanibel, a.k.a. I love my job.

I got home from my northwoods adventures late Saturday night, and headed to the airport early on Sunday. The snow on the car ride home (thanks for being a safe driver, Linn!) made me even more excited to get out to Florida for some work. It was a whirlwind two days of shooting on Captiva and Sanibel Islands. I took photos for several different publications when I was down there, all focused on saltwater fly fishing.
New fly…

Well chewed fly…

That’s a speckled sea trout. I think I’ve seen that fish before… I’m pretty sure he was in the cast of True Blood.

Ladyfish galore. They’re incredibly acrobatic, which makes them fun to watch and even more fun to catch. Hey, I didn’t have to work the whole trip!

Ashland and the Penokee Hills

One of my favorite things about Trout Unlimited is that I get to travel all over our state to visit new places, learn about the local challenges to water quality, and even catch a few cuties (the fish, of course!).
Our fall meeting was up in Ashland, Wisconsin. It was a chilly weekend, and rained a bit on Saturday. It even snowed on the drive home!
We stayed at the Hotel Chequamegon, and it has a beautiful view! It’s too bad that I didn’t have time to hang out and enjoy that view… We had work to do!

20140115-112143.jpg
The meeting was productive, as always, and it was so nice to see all my TU friends. 🙂

20140115-111737.jpg

20140115-111743.jpg
After the meeting, my friend Bill Heart took some of us on a tour of the Penokee Hills, near the mine site. The area is beautiful, and it breaks my heart to imagine those hills basically inverted for a taconite mine. There are beautiful streams running through there!

Bill also took us over to a Native American (Lac Courte Oreilles) camp that had been set up in the area- they used to call it Penokee Harvest camp, but now it is the HELP Project. HELP stands for Harvest Educational Learning Project. It was an amazing experience- we were welcomed right in and they showed us all around. Mel was a particularly helpful tribal member- he gave us the grand tour.

Wild rice!

20140115-112657.jpg
Mel specifically pointed out this rock…

20140115-113242.jpg
At first glance, it looks like any other kind of rock, but up close, you can see little spiderweb-like structures inside.

20140115-113321.jpg
Do you know what that is? Asbestos. That might be exactly what environmentally-concerned citizens need to prevent this mine from going in- breaking up those rocks in the mining process would release asbestos into the air. It’s every bit as dangerous as it sounds, and it’s very difficult to mine in areas with asbestos without endangering the people who live there.
Thanks, Bill… You’ve opened my eyes once again. I love my TU friends.

Beer, fish, cold water, apple pie, and Megan and Jim :)

Hey, friends.
Last month, B and I headed over to Pigeon River Brewing Co with our friends, Mary and Joe. They were featured in the last Hoopla magazine.

20131206-113026.jpg
It’s a small brewery in Marion, Wi, run by a couple guys and their families.

I’m always happy to see small, local businesses growing. Farmers turned brewers? Awesome. They’ve still got the bulk tank out back!
We got back from that midweek trip just in time for me to pack to head down to the Trout Unlimited annual meeting. This year, it was held down in Middleton, so I was able to drive there easily! I was asked to present about Stream Girls.
Chris Wood gave the state of TU address, filling us all in on what’s happened in the past year.

20131206-113651.jpg
My friend, Jon Christiansen, also gave his presentation, as chairman of the board.

20131206-113724.jpg
The Administrator of the EPA, Gina McCarthy, gave a very interesting presentation. I’d never taken photos at an event with Secret Service before!

As always, there was fly tying, and an awards ceremony. 🙂

As if it’s any surprise, I made a lot of new friends and got to visit with some that I hadn’t seen in a while! Have I mentioned that I love the company of fishermen and fisherwomen? I even got to sneak out early for a little run with Franklin.

I am happy to be a part of this organization!
Fall makes me want to bake and cuddle in with sweaters and soup! I picked up some beautiful apples and made a pie. 🙂 there is just something about homemade crust!

A beautiful Sunday morning arrived, perfect for Megan and Jim’s engagement session.

I’ve known Megan since junior high- we played in band together! 🙂

Love these two! Jim just became a marathoner at the Fox Cities marathon in September. 🙂 They fit together so perfectly, and they just made my job easy… Their love for each other shines through in these photos. We can’t wait until your May wedding, friends!
Sunday night was teaching ballroom dance lessons with Dale. I had a cold, so I was kind of crabby. Dale recommended that I supplement with Vitamin B… Vitamin BEAR!

It worked, and I made it through my group lessons. Don’t worry, I gave hand sanitizer to my students and used it myself! 🙂
More to come. Oh, so much more, but I’m heading out to brave the cold for a beautiful winter photo session!
