Madison Marathon 2012, a race recap

#4, in the books.
This race seemed to sneak up on me so quickly! I had my pre-race chiropractor appointment and massage, and that usually makes the race feel real to me. I work with Dr. Wally, who is an incredible chiropractor and athlete, making his treatment really applicable to me. Plus, he’s a friendly guy! Brian sees him, too. I get my massages from Tom at Adventure 212- he has a background in sports massage and he’s really good with working with my temperamental calves and feet. When I left the massage, I entered a crazy dust storm (this was on Thursday).

20120527-173752.jpg
I’d left my windows open while I ran errands in Wausau, and my house was filled with a coating of dirt. Yuck.
Brian had an MRI appointment on Friday for some headaches he’s been having. As I sat in the waiting room, my work on the cover of SCENE was staring at me.

20120527-173902.jpg
I am happy every time I see my photos out in public, and I’ve been seeing them everywhere lately! 🙂
As it turns out, Brian has a brain.

20120527-173952.jpg

20120527-174009.jpg
In fact, he has one sexy cerebellum! The technician was really nice and showed me his scans- I learned a lot! Seeing a brain like that reminded me of how fragile the human body is.
Later that evening, I met up with Dale to teach a lesson for CWN and dance with some of my students. It’s not exactly my idea of a rest day, but it was SO much fun.

20120527-174211.jpg
I don’t dance as much in the summer, because we don’t teach lessons, but I really missed all my dancing friends! 🙂
Saturday morning brought the return of carb loading 101.

20120527-174313.jpg
We gave our pups a pep talk, too. They had a new dogsitter for the weekend, and I wanted them to be on their best behavior.

20120527-174405.jpg
Abbie showed me how good she is by mastering her “down” command. What a cutie!
I spilled coffee on my trusty Moleskine while packing.

20120527-174551.jpg
Now it’s officially broken in, just when I’m about to run out of pages! 🙂
The fan in my car broke on Thursday, so handy-man Brian ran to Radio Shack, bought a part, and installed it in five minutes.

20120527-175612.jpg
Awesome! Air conditioning was a must on this trip, so I’m thankful to have it fixed!
We finished packing and headed down to Madison. It was a fast drive filled with podcasts of my favorite radio show- Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me. We checked into the hotel, did a little shopping, then headed over to the expo.
We met up with our friends there!

20120527-175712.jpg
I was very excited to buy a new 26.2 magnet for the back of my car- I forgot to take my old one off before I went through the car wash last week, and I lost it in the super-high-powered-dryer. Whoops. After my little purchase, we went to Great Dane for drinks. The water glass is mine.

20120527-175902.jpg
Everyone else is more ballsy than I am- I won’t drink before a marathon, especially in hot weather! We headed over to Ashley’s for dinner- everyone had pasta, but I had Chinese takeout. I surely felt like a food snob, but I stick with what works for me when it comes to pre-race food. We headed back to our hotel early, and I hopped in bed with some easy reading…

20120527-180039.jpg
…not. That is one monster of a book. I painted my nails and watched the Brewers lose to the D-backs, pretending to sleep. My alarm went off awfully early this morning.

20120527-180141.jpg
I took my thyroid pill and started getting things ready.

20120527-180222.jpg
I ate my usual pre race food of Greek yogurt, chia, and agave, and I wrote myself a message for later on my forearm.

20120527-180316.jpg
Some of you know that the race directors cancelled the full marathon due to the anticipated heat. They didn’t want people to get sick and overwhelm the medical staff of the city, so they had the full marathoners drop down to the half instead. I didn’t want to give up that easily, so I made a plan to run my 26.2 miles slowly, hydrate, and stop if I felt sick in any way.
Brian drove me over to the Capital to start my unofficial half marathon before the real half started.

20120527-180439.jpg
This one’s for you, Rachael. I started running around 5:30ish and the streets of downtown Madison were pretty much empty.

20120527-180523.jpg
The capital was beautiful that early in the morning- even as a reflection!

20120527-180550.jpg
There were a few other marathoners out there- I saw one woman kicking ass and a couple guys looking pretty casual and relaxed as they got their “warm-up half” in. I basically ran laps up and down State street and all around Capital Square. At one point, I bent over to tie my shoe, and I got my first wolf whistle in a long time. Yeah, I still got it. 😉
I didn’t realize that Madison had such a homeless problem. It was pretty depressing to run past all those folks sleeping on the ground or on church stairs. On a lighter note, I had an awesome water station during those first 10 miles…

20120527-180732.jpg
Brian handed me a water/powerade solution and Gu Chomps, my fuel of choice this morning.
I ran into my friends Amanda and Allie (and their dad, Go Team Schulz!) on State street!

20120527-180816.jpg
The official half started a little after 7, and I joined the crowd. I looked for my friends Ashley and Karl, but couldn’t find them. The first couple miles were pretty uneventful- it starts as a pretty steep downhill, then evens out. I saw Brian at mile 2.5, but he wasn’t looking for me- he was shouting at Karl! As soon as I saw that Karl was just ahead of me, I picked up the pace and ran with Ashley AND Karl for a little bit. I was so happy that we were able to meet up! 🙂
This race’s official charity is the American Cancer Society, so a few runners were running with ACS jerseys. Most of them had ribbons pinned to them, with the names of people we’ve lost to cancer. It was very moving to see those runners also running in memory of someone important to them. Around mile 4, I saw a ribbon on the ground- it must have fallen off of someone during the race. I was only about 10 yards past it when I decided to circle back and pick it up. I would run for a stranger, too- I’m sure Rachael knows I have plenty of heart to share.

20120527-181639.jpg
This one’s for you, Grandma Lewinski. No grandma left behind! I wonder if this will give me good Karma for Grandma’s Marathon in 19 days… 🙂
Around mile five, I started running next to one of the medical staff guys on a bike. We talked about the race so far- everyone was looking good and doing really well. It didn’t end up being as hot as forecasted- it was between 70 and 80 most of the time I was running. He gave me props for starting early- the staff guessed that some of the super dedicated marathoners would do that. I captured a picture to show you just how sane I was feeling at the time.

20120527-183806.jpg
Somewhere in the middle section around miles 6-8, Amanda and Allie found me. I ran with them for a while, and that was a nice surprise. We ran past Steve’s Tattoo, and that got me thinking both about my first tattoo and the subsequent tally marks that I’m earning this month. I’ll post more about those later. I was starting to get pretty tired around mile 10, which was my mile 20. Luckily for me, a beautiful woman sitting on the curb yelled to me, “Excuse me?! Your outfit is fabulous!” I. Loved. That. The only thing better than running marathons is running them and looking adorable while doing it. Well, an Ironman is probably better, but I have to save some goals for my 30s, no?
We had a kind of long stretch out and back on John Nolan along the lake, and I felt like those miles were never going to end. I was able to see Nate and Ashley on that stretch, though. I noticed I was running next to these two strong looking guys, and the thought entered my head that if I fell over, one of them could probably carry me the last couple miles. I laughed at that absurd thought, then they looked at me funny because I was laughing to myself. I had to share my thought process, and they said they weren’t doing so well themselves, but they’d pick me up anyway. Nice to have such running camaraderie. 🙂 The Madison fire department was out with a big fire hose, spraying it into the street for us to run through. It felt amazing! I was starting to get the I’m-near-the-finish burst of energy, but I was concerned because I knew I still had 3.5 miles to go after the finish.
A bunch of our Running for Rachael supporters were near the finish- this is what a happy runner looks like.

20120527-183921.jpg
Once I came through the finishing chute, I tried to continue running, but the square was so packed with people. By the time I broke through the crowd, fatigue was settling into my legs big time. I decided to painstakingly run 1.5 of those miles, then walk the last two with Brian. He walked me in to the “finish” of marathon number four in a smart 5:20:45.

20120527-183136.jpg
My official half marathon time (miles 10-23) was 2:22:26.
I’ve never felt so good after a marathon, and I attribute it to taking this last training run s-l-o-w-l-y and hydrating well before, during, and after.

20120527-183259.jpg
After the race, I took an ice bath, cleaned up, then headed over to a get together with friends.

20120527-183343.jpg

20120527-183355.jpg
Extra special thanks to all the people that came out to support me. Every time I heard you yelling my name or holding a sign for me, you gave me a little boost in my spirit. I couldn’t do this without you. Brian wins the spectator of the year award for hauling around a cooler with extra powerade and cold sponges for me.
I drank a giant root beer float and ate my weight in chex mix, then fell sound asleep for the drive home.

20120527-183557.jpg
I’m a four-time marathoner. Sweet.

Taper week has begun…

I can’t believe Madison Marathon is coming up so quickly. It seems like just yesterday that I set my spring and summer race schedule!
The race looks deliciously hot.

20120522-205002.jpg
I really hope they don’t cancel the race, or worse- close it once it’s already started. Last weekend’s Green Bay Marathon was closed due to the heat. What gives, Wisconsin! We are known for our temperamental weather, I guess… but I’m prepared for the heat. If there’s one thing that I consider myself as a runner, it’s a prepared marathoner. The experience helps. I just need to remember that this isn’t really a marathon, it’s my last long run before Grandma’s marathon- my hand-picked race of the season. I can’t burn myself out in Madison, or I won’t recover in time for Grandma’s. I’ve got my eye on the long distance prize. ::toast my mojito::

20120522-211537.jpg
Here’s to going slow in Madison…
Brian and I have had a busy week so far. I always have photo stuff going on, of course, but we’ve been working on more house projects. Brian installed a new outlet in the kitchen to accommodate my many kitchen appliances. 🙂

20120522-210222.jpg
There it is, strategically placed between my Kitchenaid mixer and my food processor.
I went with Justin on my last run of any real distance before Sunday. A nice, easy, seven miler today. It was beautiful weather for a little scamper through Schmeekle Reserve on the Green Circle.

20120522-210458.jpg
Thanks, Justin! You’re a great running partner. I also discovered that we are, quite literally, shoe twins!

20120522-210541.jpg
That’s matching pairs of red Mizuno Wave Alchemys. I even wear men’s shoes- they’re the same! 🙂
Brian and I stopped for lunch at the Subway on Division. I absolutely love the sub ladies there. Jennifer, Kim, and Sara… Those women make my day. They call me “Mrs. Happy” when I walk in there. PLUS- they make a delicious sandwich! They even remember my favorite order. 🙂

20120522-210926.jpg
We went to a doctor appointment for Brian, then headed over to Lee Ayers to pick up my new watch band.

20120522-211032.jpg
Slick, huh?
We also had the chance to send in my broken fly rod to be repaired/replaced. Extra thanks to my TU guys for giving me a rod with a lifetime warranty! 🙂

20120522-211137.jpg
::cries:: My rod is beautiful. I can’t wait to have it back.
I spent a lot of time working outside tonight. I mowed the lawn and weeded another section of the garden, along with planting a few tomatoes, an eggplant, and a kohlrabi. Brian has been hard at work on building me Bunny Fence 2.0. That’s the frame for my door!

20120522-211401.jpg
I’ve been hard at work getting my feet dirty in the garden.

20120522-211453.jpg
I’m off to go hold some of the frames for Brian and help with the assembly. Have a good night, friends!

Three words: fly. fishing. school.

I had the most amazing weekend!
On Friday afternoon, Brian and I hopped on our bikes to take Abbie out for a run. It was pretty warm outside, but we knew we wouldn’t be around as much this weekend, and we wanted her to get some exercise. We took her for a few miles, but when she started panting pretty hard, I scooped her up and put her in my basket.

20120520-193028.jpg
She’s way too cute. 🙂
After our bike ride, we loaded our boats and headed over to lake Emily for a quick paddle. The weather was beautiful!
20120520-185134.jpg

20120520-185140.jpg
We paddled in, loaded up, and tossed on a second layer just in time to start the main weekend event: Fly Fishing School!!
We started on Friday night with knot tying. I learned the surgeon’s knot and loop, blood knot, cinch and improved cinch knot, and the handshake.

20120520-193141.jpg
After a bunch of time with knots and some great stories, we headed home.
I woke up early on Saturday to go for a run with two strangers. Well, technically, they weren’t total strangers… I met them through my friend, Sarah Cooke. She graduated on Saturday (congratulations, girl!), and her family came to witness and celebrate her accomplishment. Enter the Cooke brothers- Andrew and Morgan. I took them out on the Green Circle for a relaxed 4.5 miler before school. Thanks for the run, guys! It was great to meet up in real life! 🙂

20120520-185820.jpg
I made it home with exactly enough time to shower and head out to day two of fly fishing school. Brian may have shut my brand new rod in the door and broke both pieces. I may have cried on the way to school. I may have made him tell everyone what happened to the rod they gave me.
We learned about the gear…

20120520-185926.jpg
Watched some fancy casting…

20120520-185949.jpg
And learned to cast on our own!

20120520-190009.jpg
I was having a lot of fun 🙂

20120520-190028.jpg
The school is held at the Riverside Bible Camp, along the Tomorrow River in Amherst. It is a BEAUTIFUL location!

20120520-190113.jpg
There was lots of wildlife, too!

20120520-190137.jpg
They cooked us delicious meals (burgers, pasta, pizza, breakfast sandwiches, cinnamon rolls, lots of fruit…), and after dinner, we started fly tying. I forgot to take photos of my flies, but you bet your bottom dollar that mine have fancy pink tails, glittery bodies, and silvery segments. 🙂 I made up my own patterns with colors that I’m sure will grab the little fishes’ attention.

20120520-190521.jpg
After a bonfire and the drive home, Brian and I crashed pretty hard. I peeled myself out of bed this morning, tired but very excited to actually go fishing today!
I ate breakfast at school, then did a half hour of yoga on the footbridge that crosses the river. It was a great practice the morning- I had fresh air blowing in my hair and the sound of running water in my ears. As soon as I rolled up my mat, we started a session that covers what TU does as far as stream restoration.

20120520-191327.jpg
We followed the work project discussion with casting review and a few casting games.

20120520-191451.jpg
I made a cameo in Brian’s sunglasses!

20120520-191514.jpg
After lunch (with WATERMELON!!!), we got everyone together…

20120520-191610.jpg
…then split up into fishing groups. Brian and I went with Wyatt to these secret little ponds, and I caught my first brook trout!

20120520-191658.jpg
I didn’t want to touch him, he was so beautiful with these pink and orange polka dots and a pretty sorbet orange tummy. Don’t worry, I caught two more! They were practically little babies, but I didn’t care. They’re soooooo cute!

20120520-191753.jpg
Wyatt stayed out with Brian and I for a few hours.

20120520-191818.jpg
Special thanks to Wyatt for helping me with everything- from tying on my fly to untangling my line to helping me cast in the wind to correcting my casting form to taking the hook out of the cute fishes’ mouths.

20120520-191922.jpg
We came home, searched for ticks, played with our pups, showered… And now I’m back to normal Heidi life, with a giant salad and Burn Notice.

20120520-192017.jpg
We even stopped at Cellar 70 on the way home and picked up some Two Hearted to celebrate our accomplishments today!

20120520-192108.jpg
Look at the little brookies on that case! 🙂
Brian is already snoring on the couch, so I better get us ready for bed.
Thanks, Frank Hornberg chapter guys- you’re a group of amazing men and I’m so blessed that you’re sharing your knowledge and experience with me!
Watch out, world… I’m a superb fly fisher-woman in the making! 🙂

The best mom ever and enjoying the weather. AND cute kids!

Happy belated Mother’s day, Mom! I love you!

20120518-152048.jpg
My mom and I spent some time together this week- we got pedicures, went to lunch, and did some shopping.

20120518-152208.jpg
Thanks to everyone for weighing in on my last post. It’s hard to keep a clear perspective on issues like that when it’s easy to put up defenses. As a plus, I’m pretty sure that when I’m ready to race, I’ll no longer be “overweight.” A few pounds really can make a difference. Just ask your knees!
For every pound a person loses, they reduce the pressure on their knees by FOUR POUNDS!
I’m starting to taper for Madison Marathon, so I’ve got the taper shakes… A.K.A. I haven’t been running as much, so I’ve got energy through the roof! 🙂
I decided to dust off my old K2s for a few miles.

20120518-152441.jpg
Brian and I took my dirty Stratus through the car wash this week. I’m such a rule breaker… I turned my wipers on, even though the signs say not to. 🙂

20120518-152750.jpg
My friend, Jessie, and I headed over to Amherst for a play date/photo shoot with our barista-friend, Genna- and her new baby, Arlo! Arlo has a big brother, and Jessie has two little girls, so it was a fun time, all around!

20120518-153024.jpg

20120518-153044.jpg

20120518-153051.jpg

20120518-153057.jpg

20120518-153104.jpg
What cuties! 🙂 I have a bad case of baby fever.
After my photo shoot, I went for a run with Justin on the Moses Creek section of the Green Circle. During our run, I found out it was his birthday!

20120518-153400.jpg
Happy birthday, Justin. 🙂 I took him over to O’so to celebrate!
After a delicious spinach salad with Brian, we went for a bike ride. He showed me the work he’s been doing now- they’re getting rid of the crazy frontage road along division, and putting in a stoplight near Kmart. It will be much safer when they’re finished! Brian was working on the electrical for the street lights.

20120518-153647.jpg

20120518-153653.jpg
Really cool stuff. On the way home, we were cruising around the neighborhood and found this awesome road art.

20120518-153825.jpg
Stevens Point road crews get bonus points for that one. It’s not often that my tax dollars make me smile randomly! 🙂
I spent the majority of my morning today working on non-shooting photo work. I made up for all that indoor time by working in the garden. I have so many weeds in there! I planted my mom’s rhubarb (thanks, Mom! It looks happy!), and I have some perennials in there- parsley, chives, and three kinds of mint.

20120518-154008.jpg
I still have a lot of weeding to do, but I’m getting anxious to plant! I love spending time in there, weeding, singing, and harvesting. I think I inherited my Gram’ and Gramps’ green thumb!
It’s time to enjoy some mint lemonade and get things ready for kayaking tonight and fly fishing school this weekend! 🙂

A storage unit, lots of photos, and serious thoughts on BMI accuracy.

Brian and I rented a storage unit. Finally. Our tiny house has been filled to the brim with our treasured possessions, and I am VERY happy to have the extra space. Of course, I forgot to take a photo of said storage unit, but I can proudly say that our items in storage are neatly packed away in labeled Rubbermaid containers. Yay for that! I now have a functioning office, a functioning music room, and a functioning laundry room!
We had a fun weekend. On Friday, we spent our evening shooting the engagement portraits of the adorable Ashlee and Nick. They are planning a local fall wedding, and we’re so excited to be working with them! 🙂 I even got shy Nick to smile in a few of the photos. 🙂 Here’s a few images from that shoot.

On Saturday, we shot the wedding of a gorgeous couple: Bry and Sam. We had so much fun with this couple- their ceremony was at Neuman in Stevens Point, we took outdoor photos at the private Noel residence, and we finished the evening at the Ridges golf course in Wisconsin Rapids.

Sam is a lucky boy- he has six sisters!

20120514-185653.jpg
Thank you for sharing your day with us, Bry and Sam! When things settle down, let’s go on a double date! 🙂
We played in the chapel worship band at Woodlands on Sunday morning. We had a great time working with our friends Doug and Devon, and we met some awesome new people! We hope to do it again sometime soon. 🙂

20120514-185955.jpg
I had a beautiful run this morning.

20120514-190018.jpg
The Green Circle really is beautiful. I’m so blessed to live so close! I took that photo less than a 1/2 mile from my home. Happy Mother’s day, sweet protective geese!

20120514-190128.jpg
I stopped for lunch with my friend, Bill, and returned some equipment of his that I’d borrowed, then headed off to the gym for some core, back, and upper body work. While I was there, I was pondering an issue that has been plaguing me for some time- my body mass index (BMI).
The CDC used to indorse using a BMI chart or calculator, saying it is a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people. I don’t know if they still stand by that stance, as many other reliable sources think that BMI measurements fall short of expectations. In my personal experience, BMI measurements are widely inaccurate because it only takes into account the height and weight of the individual. It doesn’t take into account their fitness levels, or muscle mass, or age, or build, or waist size…
Do you know your BMI? You can calculate it here.
NPR covered this topic really well in a Weekend Edition story entitled Top 10 Reasons Why The BMI Is Bogus. I am particularly interested in how the BMI is used in creating statistics that describe what percentage of Americans are overweight or obese.
Do you have any thoughts on this topic? For what it’s worth…

20120514-191424.jpg…this is what overweight looks like. According to my BMI.

A mood-swing-filled twenty miler.

After our crazy weekend of many friends in our tiny home (just how I like it!), there was one casualty.

20120508-213309.jpg
My blender didn’t survive the margarita madness. We had to go blender shopping on Sunday night so I could make my post-run recovery smoothie on Monday. We ended up with a Ninja system– which was pretty expensive but should last a long time and it does a REALLY good job. I also found a few blogs that show great Ninja recipes, like energy chews and ice cream and all sorts of delicious ideas. 🙂 On the way home from Target, we saw an Almond Tree van on the highway. What are the odds of that? Brian sped up so we could wave at Jon and Kristi.
We made shakes on Sunday night to try out the new machine, and then I hit the hay to rest for Monday’s run.
I started the day with coffee and my usual breakfast of Greek yogurt, fruit, agave, nuts, and chia.

20120508-213822.jpg
I was feeling a little apprehensive about this run, but for no good reason. It was sprinkling a little in the early morning, but by about 10, the weather took a turn for the better, and I headed out around noon. I took a slightly hilly route out just north of town, along the river. My plan was to do two 10 mile out-and-backs, and stop at home in between to fill up my water. Unfortunately, the explorer in me had a different idea, and when I got to my five mile turnaround, I kept going. It was a beautiful route…

20120508-215226.jpg
…a good mix of gravel and pavement…

20120508-215247.jpg
…exposed tree roots…

20120508-215315.jpg
…and little waterfalls! Can you blame me for not wanting to turn around? It wasn’t until the road ended at 7.3 miles that I caved. Of course, I ran out of water about 10 miles in, and I was also being chased by a hornet. As it turns out, when I get dehydrated, I turn into cranky Heidi. I started thinking that maybe I’d just take a few big gulps of the river… And the Wisconsin river up here is pretty gross. I paddle in it all the time, and swim occasionally, but it is definitely not drinkable. With that longer route, I knew I’d have to fill up at home, then head out for a 5.4 out-and-back, and I was so crabby that I knew I wouldn’t go back out if I stopped at home. My only logical option was to skip my house and take my turning-salty-and-starting-to-cramp body to the park for water instead. What happened next was only slightly short of embarrassing.
When I give my black lab unlimited water, she drinks until she pukes. That’s practically what happened at the water fountain. I drank 20 oz of water, then filled up both of my 10 oz bottles for the remaining 5ish miles. I didn’t puke, but my first half mile after that was done with all that water sloshing around in my stomach. Whoops.
I headed on a more traveled route and saw my friend Lee, who hollered at me, and I was encouraged. I also thought about jewelry for a mile or so. 🙂 The last five miles were a lot slower than the first fifteen, but I got the miles in and learned a valuable lesson.

Cinco de Mayo!

Crazy weekend so far at the Oberstadt home.
On Thursday night, I had a TU board meeting and Brian had a union meeting. I’m super excited to go to fly fishing school in two weeks.

20120506-133549.jpg

20120506-133600.jpg
Our board is a bunch of fun guys, and they are teaching me a lot.

20120506-133627.jpg
After I finished up the meeting, I headed over to Guu’s to meet Ashley and Sarah to drop off one of the Running for Rachael shirts. It turned out to be a night of awesome random encounters! Starting with…

20120506-133808.jpg
…my friend, Brendan, who was celebrating the end of his long commutes to finish up his doctoral degree. The girls came soon after. Since the loss of our sisters, we cherish each other and make every effort to see our friends whenever we can!

20120506-134001.jpg
I played a few games of foos with Mikey…

20120506-134037.jpg
…saw Jim doing yo yo tricks…

20120506-134119.jpg
…and wrapped up the night with my sweet husband.

20120506-134344.jpg
Brian had Friday off from work, so we worked in the yard together, and we found the best surprise…

20120506-134437.jpg
Morels! Yum. Friday was a blur of getting ready for the weekend. We drove up to Wausau to drop off May day flowers for my mom and stop at Sam’s Club. We also shot a piano studio recital on Friday night, but I don’t have photo releases for those adorable kids so I can’t provide any proof.
We woke up early on Saturday to head to La Crosse for a 5K. Brian was driving, I was sleeping. This is me, upon waking. 🙂

20120506-135033.jpg
My trusty driver.

20120506-135051.jpg
We had just gotten into La Crosse when my car started sputtering. We looked at the gas gauge, and I had 1/8 tank of gas left, then my car turned off. We coasted into a parking lot, and I got worried. Brian was convinced that my gauge was broken and my car was out of gas…

20120506-135404.jpg
…and he was right. So my gauge must be broken. 😦 I did learn that gas stations often have loaner gas cans. I hated being that couple walking down the street carrying a gas can. How embarrassing! Luckily, it was an easy fix, and our friend, Karl, was able to pick up our bibs for us. We made it to the race with plenty of time to spare. It was an overcast, humid morning, and the race started and finished along the water.

20120506-135657.jpg

20120506-135706.jpg

20120506-142253.jpg
This is everyone before the race.
Brian was beyond ready!

20120506-135730.jpg
I was, too!

20120506-135751.jpg
Jaime walked the race with her brother- and sister-in-law, and their super cute baby, Lucy! Karl started the race with us.

20120506-135841.jpg
We started too far back in the pack- we had to weave through a lot of walkers. Whoops. We had a little fun with that, then settled in to our pace.

20120506-135934.jpg
La Crosse’s police department uses Jeeps!

20120506-140004.jpg
The course was a mix of city streets and paths along the water.

20120506-140056.jpg
We finished with a official time of 30:28 and 30:29. I cheered Brian on ahead of me. 🙂 I’m still debating the time- my Garmin showed our time being a full minute faster than theirs- I wonder if this race messed up our official start time? Anyway, I cried happy tears of pride for my husband.

20120506-140652.jpg

20120506-140708.jpg

20120506-140829.jpg
Lucy was able to walk across the finish line for the first time, and it was adorable.

20120506-140911.jpg
We stopped at Panera bread for lunch. 🙂

20120506-141015.jpg

20120506-141024.jpg
I love you, Jaime! The ride home was beautiful- I love that area of our state. La Crosse is so hilly, and everything was so green with the rain we’ve had lately.

20120506-141123.jpg
We got home from the race and started preparing for my photo shoot and our Cinco de Mayo get together. I left our house just as people were arriving, and I headed over to the Theatre @1800 to shoot the concert of my friend, Danny. I love hearing him play, and our friend Ben flew in from Maryland to play, as well.

It was great to see you, Danny. Thanks for having me capture your concert!

20120506-141551.jpg
It was also SUPER awesome to see Ben.

20120506-141616.jpg
I rushed home to see all our friends. Brian, Devon and Christy, Amanda, Curtis and Mo, Davin and Kari, and Mary and Joe. It was a fun night of margaritas, Cranium, charades, and friends 🙂

Curtis, Mo, and Amanda spent the night 🙂 We made a delicious pancake breakfast since I’m carb loading for tomorrow’s 20 miler.

I have to go for now- the boys were rained out of their golf scramble today, so we’re having an afternoon of friends, too! 🙂

Happy (belated) May day!

Hey, friends. 🙂 I hope that May is treating you all well so far!
After my whirlwind weekend, I spent Monday recovering… Laundry, cleaning the house, and TONS of photo sorting. While I was at the gym on Monday, a man had a heart attack.

20120503-160925.jpg
I’ve since changed my name to Concernicus, since I’m deeply concerned about my own heart health, and I’m concerned that I wasn’t wouldn’t be able to help a stranger in need. I need to re-learn CPR. Seriously. While I know that prayer is powerful, I have a hunch that chest compressions might be more powerful in that situation. I’m taking a class in June.
I came home from the gym pretty shaken up, but I was also SUPER hungry, so I wanted to get started on dinner right away. We had Mexican! Brian had some delicious tacos and I had a taco salad. With a Coronoa, of course! 🙂

20120503-161229.jpg
Tuesday was a miracle of a day- I got my kayak rack readjusted and brought our boats home for the summer. We store them over at our friends’ house during the winter. Thanks, Bill and Beth! This is what a happy Stratus looks like!

20120503-161354.jpg
I didn’t have time to take my boat out for a spin because we had to head to small group. This is our first small group led by Robert, but we love Tapestry, so I thought we’d enjoy it. We’re reading and discussing Things Unseen by Mark Buchanan. So far, I’m intrigued.
I was able to take my boat out yesterday for some BEAUTIFUL time on the Wisconsin River. I love that we live just a few blocks away. I’m also continually reminded of how blessed I am to have the equipment and the strength to paddle. I saw some fish and quite a few birds, although the water was pretty murky looking after all the rain we’ve had lately. The sun was shining and the wind was blowing lightly. It was a perfect afternoon to escape real life and play on the water for a while.

20120503-161828.jpg
I stopped at the Hostel Shoppe afterwards to have a little work done on my bike, and I picked up some delicious buns at the co-op for Brian to make grilled chicken sandwiches for dinner. You know me and my penchant for greens… I had a grilled chicken salad. 🙂
Our neighbor, William, also took me out for my first Harley ride of the season. Aw, yeah. I saw Matt Kirsch while out there… Hey, Matt! That was me with that helmet on, waving like a crazy person. 🙂
We had some crazy storms last night, so I didn’t sleep well. It’s okay, though- dreary weather is God’s way of helping me be more productive indoors. I have a hard time sitting in a dim room editing photos when nature is calling me to run/paddle/cycle/garden. You know what I’m talking about! 🙂
My friend, Justin, came over and we went for a run today. I haven’t seen him since our Pray-Sims days, so it was awesome to catch up! We did a little 6.5 mile loop around the river. My back has been sore for about three weeks now, and it was bothering me a lot on the run today 😦
At least I had some great company to help keep me distracted! I hope my back shapes up and heals before my marathon madness this summer. Thanks, Justin. 🙂

20120503-162535.jpg
I’ve got some more photo work to get done before we have another busy weekend, so I’m off to my dimly lit room. 🙂

CrazyLegs race recap and fun formal events!

I have lots of wonderful news to report. 🙂
I had a wonderfully busy weekend full of friends, running, and shooting like crazy!
Let’s start on Thursday- I went to lunch with my friend and photo mentor, Bill.20120429-204732.jpg
He’s been the guy to talk to when I have any camera-equipment (or kayaking or woodworking) related questions. After lunch, we went to visit our friend, Randy, who owns Radio Kaos.
20120429-205053.jpg That’s us with my newest cd, Lucero’s Women & Work. I’ll post more about the awesomeness that is Randy later. Hint: he’s WAY better than Pandora at helping me find music I’ll like.
On Thursday night, we headed over just north of town for an engagement shoot with Kim and Mark. They’re two awesome bikers who are adorable together and we had a ton of fun!

Later that night, we went out with our friends, and discovered that Guu’s has Bell’s Two-Hearted!!!!
20120429-210149.jpg20120429-210158.jpg
I spent Friday morning cleaning the house, editing photos, and getting ready for Friday and Saturday’s events. I met with Sarah in the afternoon; she interviewed me for her Entrepreneurship class. 20120429-210404.jpg Thanks, Sarah! It was great to catch up with you and I’m glad I could answer your questions for class.
I stopped at the grocery store on the way home to get the ingredients for dinner.20120429-210543.jpg
Reason #17354892735920 that I love warm weather- outdoor grilling!20120429-210620.jpg
We finished dinner just in time to get ready to head over to campus and shoot Soirée Musicale. I love this event- it raises money for scholarships, and it’s near and dear to our hearts since we were once scholarship recipients. 🙂 20120429-210746.jpg20120429-210753.jpg20120429-210759.jpg

After that late night, we went straight to bed. We met Amanda in Plover at 6 am on Saturday to head down to Madison for CrazyLegs.

20120429-211105.jpg
I had a few friends running the race…

20120429-211131.jpg
…and the rest of our supporters manned a table with melanoma information and all sorts of goodies from the Melanoma Research Foundation.
About the race itself: I had a blast. It was a cold, rainy morning, but there was so much excitement with the 25,000 runners that I was pretty distracted. It took 25 minutes to cross the start line, but that gave me a chance to get to know the folks around me.

20120429-211533.jpg

20120429-211546.jpg
Don’t mind the angled picture of the capital, I was trying to walk and shoot while keeping my phone dry 😉
I started out next to a guy named Kevin. I asked him what time our wave was expecting. I know we put in our anticipated finishing time when we register to help the organizers set the waves correctly, but I forgot what I’d planned on. He reminded me that our wave was for the 10:00 mile people. I smiled, because I must have been feeling pretty relaxed when I set that time. Kevin looked at me and said, “Ten minutes, but I bet you’re going to blow that out of the water, huh?” He was reading my mind. Kevin asked if he could run with me, and of course, I said yes. Once the race started, we continued to chat- and I discovered that this was Kevin’s first race! I wanted to help him have a good experience, so I felt him out and we ended up talking about half of the race. I asked him how he got into running, and that’s when he revealed the kicker. He had a stint put in his heart at the end of October. I was so proud of him for running this race- he said running was a part of his cardiovascular rehabilitation. Absolutely awesome! I helped him maintain an even pace, which ended up with us passing lots of people in the last couple miles. We had a lot of fun weaving around the people who’d drastically slowed down- it was like playing a (polite!) game of catch. We came into the finish together, but he let me finish first, even though I was waving him ahead. 🙂

20120429-212320.jpg
Congratulations, Kevin! You are one inspirational stranger!

20120429-212402.jpg
I finished with an official time of 45:42. Since it’s my first 8K, it’s automatically a PR! 🙂

20120429-212425.jpg
We love you, Rachael. Race 3 of 6, done. Oh, and I saw a giant Bucky. 🙂

20120429-212536.jpg
After the race, we went to our friend’s apartment to warm up and visit. Ashley, Amanda, Sarah, and Sarah’s mom were there. 🙂 More friends were coming, but Brian and I had to head back to Stevens Point to clean up and get ready for the Rotary Club’s ball in Wausau. We donated our services to this event to help them raise money for new literacy programs. Reading is fun and SO important!

The band, Fat Brass, was pretty awesome! They played a variety of different styles, and it was a fun night. It’d been a while since Brian put on a tux and I put on a dress at the same time. 🙂

20120429-212950.jpg
Dale was there, too! We got to share a few dances at the end of the night.

20120429-213118.jpg
Talk about an exhausting day!
This morning, I made Brian some delicious homemade muffins. Giant banana-nut-chocolate-chip muffins. 🙂 I also got to babysit for the ADORABLE baby Halle. I took a few pictures- I’ll post them soon.

20120429-213444.jpg
I got to play with her while her beautiful momma was rehearsing with Brian’s sax quartet. We went for a walk. Can you find the baby in the bundle of blankets? 🙂

20120429-213536.jpg
We came home from the walk to hear the quartets’ last tune. I love having live music in my home!

20120429-213617.jpg
Off to go watch some True Blood with my handsome hubby. 🙂

A busy week of photos and recovery!

20120425-204543.jpg
Hi!
How are things over in your world, friends? Things are going well over here. I’m in the middle of a busy week! After the 1/2 marathon on Sunday, I took a day off to rest, and started some recovery runs this week. I’ve been a sore lady! On Tuesday, I ran three miles indoors and did 45 minutes on the elliptical machine. I spent quite a while talking to the Cybex rep at my gym; he was supervising the maintenance staff as they assembled our new piece of equipment- I think it’s called an Arc Trainer. Here’s a blurry photo of the guys assembling it, from my perspective on the elliptical next to them. 🙂

20120425-205102.jpg
I also stopped over at Christian’s Bistro to get a few shots of Michael, the executive sous chef. He is featured in the May SCENE as the subject of the Frugal Foodies column.

20120425-205905.jpg
His knife tattoos used to scare the crap out of me, but then I found out that he’s a cool, nice guy who just happens to have knife tattoos. At least he’s a chef, and not a serial killer. LOL.
Tuesday night, one of my BFFs, Amy, came to town for dinner.

20120425-205156.jpg
Isn’t she the cutest? She showed up in a surprise- she got a new car!

20120425-205251.jpg
What a sweet ride. As we cruised to dinner, I had flashbacks to when she was 16 and I was 15, and she’d drive us to school together in her sweet Contour. 🙂 We went for sushi at Matsu Ya. Gosh, I love that place!

20120425-205507.jpg
Our post-dinner plans included Belts, red wine, and a new-to-us episode of True Blood.

20120425-205615.jpg
I started off today’s errands with a photo shoot over at Adventure 212.

20120425-210053.jpg
I really DO feel like I live there! I was working with two adorable ladies today.

20120425-210141.jpg

20120425-210147.jpg
I got in a quick run and I was able to try out that new equipment. I like that new thing! It was different than anything else I’ve tried, and I felt like I got a good workout in on it. I’m looking forward to using it more! On my way out of the gym, I stopped in at Wally’s (amazing chiropractor) office to catch up with my coworker-turned-coffee-friend-turned-wedding-day-personal-attendant, Jessie. She’s his office assistant on Wednesdays. How cute is she?!

20120425-210457.jpg
I stopped over at Walgreens on the way home to pick up my thyroid medication. I have to go every month- it would be much easier if I could get a 90-day prescription! Every time I go, I think about how I have to take those pills every day for the rest of my life or I’ll die. I looked in the mirror of my car visor at my scar and and thought about how good it looks. I took a picture, and you can hardly even see it. I’m so blessed that I had such a good surgeon who made my scar very small.

20120425-210825.jpg
Luckily, I had an afternoon coffee date with my sole sisters Kim and Nancy.

20120425-211007.jpg
We talked about Nancy’s race in Boston, and my race in Oshkosh, and plans for our future races. I am SO PROUD of Nancy’s strategy to run through the heat- she arrived healthy (though dehydrated) and smiling at the finish line, and many runners were not as “lucky.” One of the lessons that I’ve learned is that one shouldn’t underestimate the marathon. Though I get “better” and certainly more experienced every time, it is still a challenge, no matter how prepared I am. Nancy and Kim are so good at keeping my mind focused on the important things in my running life. It was nice to talk through my plans for the next four races (in seven weeks!) and solidify my pace goals. I was a little down after my placement in Oshkosh, though I gained new perspective since then. First of all, I discovered that my field actually contained 29 brave women. Ninth out of 29? I’ll take that. Second, I saw the amazing Gladys Knight on Jimmy Kimmel last night after she’d been eliminated from Dancing With the Stars. She said something that really resonated with me.

“It wasn’t so much about getting the trophy. It was about standing up and saying, ‘we can live our dreams, if we just give it a shot.'”

You know, I’m living my dreams right now. And that’s pretty darn awesome, isn’t it? I have to remember to focus on the moment- on my own accomplishments- and not get hung up on competition with other folks.
When I got home from our coffee date, Brian and I ran outside to the park for a few “self-portraits.” It was way overdue, and our website needs some new photos of us, stat. The last time I met with a new client, she didn’t recognize me because our photos on the website are so old. That’s just ridiculous, isn’t it?! We’re in the photo business. How hard can a self-portrait be? Here’s the result from tonight’s shoot with minor editing…I left the bags under my eyes so everyone knows what a starving, exhausted artist I am, haha.
