Packer family night, Kim and Mark, and fishing in Viroqua!

I’ve had a great week, filled with lots of photos πŸ™‚
Thursday had a photo shoot with Chef from Christian’s Bistro and Father Fat’s, two popular restaurants in town. He’s featured in one of the Hoopla articles next month.

20120809-113112.jpg

20120809-113119.jpg
I even had the tough job of eating the food he cooked during the shoot. πŸ˜‰ Perks of my job, I think!
Speaking of food, Brian and I found a giant peanut. The giant is on the left, a normal peanut is on the right.

20120809-113304.jpg
I won Randy’s 52 week CD giveaway last week, so I stopped by Radio Kaos to pick out a new album. Old Crow Medicine Show, ftw.

20120809-113358.jpg
Brian’s car needed some work, so he spent most of his free time working on that, and Misty kept him company, laying in the plant-formerly-known-as-grass. We needed rain.

20120809-113607.jpg
Figs are in season in some of the warmer states, and I was happy to get my hands on some this week.

20120809-120225.jpg
Figs + yogurt + granola + coffee = a very happy Heidi.
We had the opportunity to go to the Packer scrimmage that they call “Family Night.” Appropriately, we went with Brian’s family.

20120809-113903.jpg
I got to try on a Superbowl ring, NBD.

20120809-113930.jpg

20120809-113948.jpg
Lambeau is a magical place. We were handing out programs prior to the game, and I met a man on the board of directors (it’s his Super Bowl ring). He let me go up to all the different levels and check out the view- even the brand-new rooftop!

That last one is the view from our actual seats. Our nephews were playing a new game: Hide From Aunt Heidi’s Cameraphone. πŸ™‚

20120809-114415.jpg
Those two are brothers, and so are these three…

20120809-114439.jpg
After the “game” was over, there were fireworks!

20120809-114522.jpg

20120809-114534.jpg
On the way out, we saw Brian’s cousin, Miles. Seriously- there are Oberstadts everywhere! We’re slowly taking over the world and spreading our influence…. πŸ™‚

20120809-114629.jpg
We headed out ASAP to try and beat the crowds…

20120809-114657.jpg
…so we’d be home to get a good night of sleep before a busy Saturday at Kim and Mark’s wedding.
Men and women certainly start their wedding day differently!

20120809-114815.jpg

20120809-114823.jpg
Kim had TWO fabulous pairs of shoes. They were gorgeous.

20120809-114858.jpg
I went to school and danced on the Pom squad with Kim’s daughter, Nicki, so please excuse the shameless photos of her adorable little family. Nicki’s daughters were the flower girls. πŸ™‚

I was so tired after all that fun on Saturday that I had a heck of a time getting up on Sunday to go fishing. My friend, Forrest, took me and his other friend, Dave, down to Viroqua to fish for some trout. I basically spent the whole day with two guides- I’m such a lucky girl! I caught four brown trout, including my biggest one- 12″! Here’s a few photos from my day on the stream.

Hoopla’s launch, Chelsea and Jacob, old friends, grandparents, and fresh vegetables!

I’ve had a busy last few days. That kind of busy where I’m so happy that business is booming, but I’d love to go spend a few quality hours in my garden. Maybe next week πŸ™‚
It started Thursday evening with the launch party for Hoopla. Hoopla is the new Central Wisconsin magazine that I shoot for. We had the party over at O’so Brewing, and I got the chance to meet the rest of the staff and writers.

20120801-201801.jpg
That’s my editor, Heather, and I πŸ™‚

20120801-201849.jpg
There’s a bunch of us!

20120801-201906.jpg
There was also some pretty delicious cake.
The vegetables in my garden have finally been approaching ripeness. Tomatoes, peas, beans, cucumbers, banana peppers, and jalapeΓ±os.

20120731-182945.jpg
I love walking out there to harvest food for our meals.
Here’s a funny and unrelated topic… I was telling Brian that I really need to clean out my purse because there’s a bunch of things that don’t belong in there…

20120731-183040.jpg
…mayflies, included. Haha.
Saturday brought the beautiful wedding of Chelsea and Jacob. I’ll never forget the beautiful engagement photos we took of this couple in Seattle last fall.
Their wedding was in Mosinee, and it was a gorgeous outdoor ceremony, surrounded by green woods and beautiful flowers from Randy at Evolutions In Design. I love their flowers- always stunning.

Jacob is a fly fishing guide, so parts of the wedding were fishing-themed- including the boutonnieres!

The ring bearer even carried up the rings in a little tackle box. Sooooo cute.

Congratulations, Chelsea and Jacob! We had a wonderful time with you on your gorgeous wedding day! πŸ™‚
Sunday brought brewing beer with our friends, Joe and Mary. Joe writes a fabulous column in Hoopla called “Brew Supply” that covers home brewing, brewery reviews, and the politics of brewing. We would have loved hanging out over there anyway, but we got to call it “work” this time.

A lot of the brewing process really involves waiting, a.k.a. drinking beer and playing games.

20120801-203431.jpg

20120801-203437.jpg
Even the beer is happy! πŸ˜€

20120801-203512.jpg
I’ve been watching the Olympics every chance I get, so it’s been some late nights at our house. It makes that 8 am alarm clock seem so early. Self-employment problems, I know. πŸ™‚
I had a car repair appointment on Monday morning, so I had to get my run in “early.” I like to call these types of runs “surprise runs,” since I’m already a mile in by the time I wake up and it’s like, “SURPRISE, we’re running!” I don’t do many of those early runs anymore, but they always remind me of the many miles I logged with my sole sisters, Kim and Nancy. Those ladies had me out running at 5 or 6 am!
Speaking of running- one of the many things that I love about living where I do is that I can run or bike almost anywhere. I love using the term running errands in a literal sense.

20120731-184119.jpg
I found a special message on my pharmacy run yesterday.

20120731-184410.jpg
Shameless photo of delicious food:

20120731-184149.jpg
I’ve had almost the same breakfast every day this week- eggs, avocado, fresh chives, and chopped spinach.
Yesterday was packed with three of my favorite ladies- shopping with my mom, coffee with Amy, and dinner and drinks with Nikki. Too many amazing women in such a short time period. Love you, ladies!

20120801-203622.jpg

20120801-203627.jpg

20120801-203634.jpg
After all that fun time, I stopped home to visit my grandparents. I love those two people soooo much! Grampie put on his “ears” (hearing assistance) so we could have a conversation. Since his hearing is so poor, we haven’t had a real conversation in a couple years, but we talked all about fishing and he told me some great stories.

20120801-204023.jpg
Grammie asked me about fishing, too. She said when I was little, I refused to eat fish because of their “cute little eyes and sad little faces.” Once my grandparents took me fishing up north, I stopped eating my favorite food- Schwan’s fish nuggets. I guess I have always had a soft spot in my heart for fish. πŸ™‚

20120801-204138.jpg
I worked for the Almond Tree up in Mercer today. It was a rainy day up there, and I got stung by a hornet!

20120801-204246.jpg
I even found a heart-shaped nut.

20120801-204319.jpg
We met up with Kim and Mark to go over the details for their wedding this weekend… We can’t wait!!!
I’m off to enjoy more Olympics with my handsome man. See y’all soon! πŸ™‚

My week as a ninjagrapher!

Brian and I spent the last five days shooting at Lifest as a part of the ninjagraphers. Ninjagraphers are the photographers and videographers contracted through Life! Promotions to capture their events. I have a ton of photos and stories to share- but I’m going to start at the beginning of my week.
I had to do a headshot self-portrait to use in the publication of Hoopla, which will be coming out in two weeks.

20120716-120516.jpg
I’m very excited for this new publication, although we’ll have to wait until the second issue to see my work on the cover- this month’s cover story comes from out-of-state.
I started jury duty on Wednesday. I was unhappy that the timing had to coincide with Lifest, because that’s one of my favorite events to shoot all year. I got up early to commute the whopping 1.5 miles to the courthouse…

20120716-120744.jpg
…then waited patiently in the hallway…

20120716-120805.jpg
…then turned off my phone. I had to sit through a few hours of jury selection, random number drawings, and lots of questions. I wasn’t selected, though, and I was able to make a break for it (legally!) and get packed for Lifest.

20120716-120935.jpg
We packed up the cameras, overnight gear, and puppies…

20120716-121033.jpg
…and headed to Oshkosh.
As a reminder, all photos on this blog are (c) Heidi Oberstadt, and the Lifest photos are (c) Life! Promotions.
Our work at Lifest is always an amazing time. It’s hard to explain the bond between our team- it’s a group of photographers, videographers, and editors who capture, sort, edit, upload, and build videos of the event. We’re a well-oiled volunteering machine.

20120716-121450.jpg
That’s one of Lem’s (our team leader) portraits of the team. We spend the week logging lots of miles walking around, climbing, laying in the dirt, riding on a golf cart…

20120716-121624.jpg
…and trying desperately to stay hydrated. We work in a TINY trailer next to the grandstand…

20120716-121750.jpg
…and try to work as quickly and efficiently as possible. There are two married teams on the ninjagraphers, and the rest of the team has friends and families that graciously let us steal them away and work them to exhaustion during the festival. πŸ™‚

20120716-121923.jpg
We do have an incredible opportunity to shoot some world-class artists (like Switchfoot and Newsboys), but we have an even more wonderful chance to catch the joy, excitement, and faith of all those in attendance. We also get to meet a lot of awesome people! This year, we met a band from Kentucky called Too Many Drummers. Those guys are classically trained musicians, so we sat and geeked out about things like marimba, accordion, and the joys of teaching music and sharing it with others. We caught their second show, and we caught some great facial expressions, too!

20120716-124839.jpg

20120716-124847.jpg

20120716-124854.jpg
I caught our friends, Bill and Darrell. They were ninjagraphers a few years ago, and we had a blast! I see them once a year, and they always make me smile.

20120716-125004.jpg
I end up feeling so special at Lifest. Our job can be exhausting and stressful, but it is an amazing opportunity. I work with wonderful people, and after five years on the team, I have gotten to “know the ropes.” I get to wear a fancy lanyard with a fancy all-access pass and fancy backstage access.

20120716-122939.jpg
It gets me to places like this:

20120716-130907.jpg
Despite that, I still get really nervous being up on stage. I’m afraid I’m going to get in someone’s way or distract from the show. That’s part of why we’re “ninjas,” we try to be sneaky and not intrude. I’m not very good at that. When I come in a room, people almost always see me. I even wear black in the heat, but I’m not exactly flying under the radar. I’d have to stop smiling and glowing from the inside, and that’s not going to happen anytime soon. πŸ™‚
Fort Fawley is my favorite place to hang out during the week.

20120716-124127.jpg
Andy has an incredible food ministry going on over there- they feed us (delicious home-cooked REAL food!) and make sure we’re hydrated. In fact, they cook the best meals at Lifest!

20120716-124431.jpg
They don’t even make me pull any meal shifts. πŸ™‚

20120716-124034.jpg
I can’t divulge their location- it’s top secret. πŸ™‚ I did take Too Many Drummers over there for breakfast on Saturday, though.

20120716-123902.jpg

20120716-123939.jpg
They had plenty of watermelon to feed my addiction.

20120716-125126.jpg
Thanks for everything, Fawley family! You are wonderful.
This is what it looks like from my point of view. I shot this view forwards…

20120716-130513.jpg
…then turned around and shot this view, behind me!

20120716-130544.jpg
Tracy and I are the only girls allowed on the stage to shoot. It’s an honor but comes with a lot of responsibility. Responsibility to shoot a self-portrait in an awesome place, anyway!

20120716-130646.jpg
I always try to sneak around and find new places to shoot from. These are two of my favorite shots of Duncan- the drummer from Newsboys.

20120716-130730.jpg

20120716-130744.jpg
Lifest had their second annual 5K race this year.

20120716-123259.jpg
Brian ran it with me, and we had a great time!

20120716-122617.jpg
I think he liked it, but I don’t know if he’ll be running marathons anytime soon.

20120716-122653.jpg
Lem and Nick gave our sweaty ninja bodies a ride back to the campsite to get changed and ready to shoot for the day.

20120716-123408.jpg
It’s good to know people. πŸ™‚ Sometimes, the ninjas all get together and be nerdy camera-y tech-y people together. Like this…

20120716-123520.jpg
Here’s a few of my favorite shots from the week.

20120716-123723.jpg

20120716-123735.jpg

20120716-123744.jpg
Those are Switchfoot. Just as exciting was the performance of the Black Star drumline from Madison.

20120716-125705.jpg

20120716-125712.jpg
Those little drummer kids absolutely stole my heart.

20120716-124226.jpg
We stayed at my mother-in-law’s home for the week, and we had a full house with us, our pups, and Brian’s aunt and cousins- Jill, Mackenzie, and Allie. Brian’s aunt Jackie came for one of the concerts, too. πŸ™‚

20120716-125628.jpg

20120716-124636.jpg

20120716-124651.jpg

20120716-124705.jpg

20120716-124715.jpg
I talked with Tiffany Thompson…

20120716-125232.jpg
…saw a fancy motorcycle show…

20120716-125305.jpg

20120716-125314.jpg
…heard Bob Lenz speak (Lifest is his party, really)…

20120716-125351.jpg
…shot Family Force 5…

20120716-125418.jpg
…was amazed at the crowd for Steven Curtis Chapman…

20120716-125507.jpg
…and enjoyed an outdoor Catholic mass.

20120716-125532.jpg

20120716-125538.jpg

20120716-125544.jpg
Lifest is always an incredible experience. It’s so exciting to be a part of something so big, and we love being able to make people happy. We get to give away private meet-and-greet invitations and prizes, and we get to put their photos up on the jumbotron. After another successful year, we were exhausted.
Our pups had a wonderful time running in the woods at Jean’s house, so they had a great week, too.

20120716-131652.jpg

20120716-131659.jpg
We were all ready to go home, though.

20120716-131721.jpg
We came home to a warm house with a warm forecast for Monday, so we installed our new air conditioner in the office.

20120716-124324.jpg
It’s now a comfortable 73 degrees in here!
Just when I thought my week couldn’t get any better, I found out that my billboard for Lee Ayers is up. It’s the first time that a photo of mine has been on a billboard!

20120716-131951.jpg
My mom saw this photo and said, “When I told you the sky was the limit, I didn’t think your photos would be in the sky!” How cute.
This is a new milestone for me. Woo hoo! I’m off to celebrate.

A Wisconsin heat wave

Hey there, friends! I hope that those of you in this heat wave are staying cool and hydrated. I haven’t been turning on the stove much this week- lots of salads in our home! πŸ™‚
20120709-202102.jpg20120709-202109.jpg20120709-202114.jpg
It’s the best time of the year for salad ingredients around here. πŸ™‚ Tonight’s salad had fresh yellow beans, chives and basil!
On Tuesday night, I ran a race called the Heart and Sole race, in Pittsville, WI. The proceeds from that race went to support their firemen. I love small town races! πŸ™‚ I told my friend, George, about the race, and we ran the five mile race together (almost). When we got to registration and bib pickup around 6:30, it was a balmy 94 degrees.

20120709-202738.jpg

20120709-202841.jpg
They had a trumpeter play the national anthem, which was a nice change from the usual vocalists. Can you see him playing over on the left?

20120709-203011.jpg
I wore my Mizunos and pink socks.

20120709-211805.jpg
It was a very Heidi-esque outfit. Running skirt, of course… And loads of sweat. This race was hot. In my mental plan, I was thinking I’d stick to 9:15s for the course. Around mile 2, I passed this guy.

20120709-203715.jpg
He added new meaning to a small-town, down-home, farming-country race. Yikes.
It’s almost like I didn’t take into account the severity of the heat- I was nailing that pace for the first three miles, but then I got sick to my stomach. A few dry heaves later, it was apparent that I had nothing left in my stomach to puke up, and I heeded some sound advice: “Suck it up, buttercup.” it’s not like I was running to win, there was no prize money for me at the finish, and I wanted to enjoy some of the homemade granola and beer! I rolled in at a casual 51:40. The sweat was running down my legs, it was nasty. I kicked a few little kids out of the sprinkler and stood there with the cold water spraying on me to cool down.

20120709-203618.jpg
I finished with a smile on my face, and George and I headed home.

20120709-203842.jpg
Brian and I ran down to the river to do a little night swimming to cool off.
On the fourth, I woke up late and spent the morning with my pups and Brian.

20120709-203943.jpg
Misty has been on an ice cube diet this week, to help keep herself cool. I love that old dog.
We did a lot of work up in the office, despite it being 95 degrees up there! We’re preparing it for an air conditioner- it should arrive tomorrow. It’s getting hard on me to do all my editing and photo work down in the living room. I can’t separate work and home, when it’s literally a shared space. I’m so happy that we got that work done quickly, so we could head to the beach!

20120709-204415.jpg
Hello, Sunset Lake! It was packed, but nice and cool.

20120709-204449.jpg

20120709-204459.jpg
When we got home, we decided to take Abbie out for a run. I hadn’t taken her out for exercise at all this week due to the heat, and we were all going crazy on day three of no Abbie-cersize. We took our cruiser bikes to Belts, and stopped every mile or so to give Abbie a break and some water. She even got her own ice cream…

20120709-204643.jpg
…and she got a ride, if we thought she was getting too hot.

20120709-204719.jpg

20120709-204751.jpg
Thursday brought a trip out where tractors are a mode of transportation… Lakeview Berry Farm!

20120709-212059.jpg
They’re featured in an article in the August (inaugural!) issue of Hoopla, coming out soon. Until then, here’s a preview. Let’s go berry picking!

Those blueberries are huge! πŸ™‚
Friday was the start of packing and traveling for our camping weekend! For the most part, clients of ours aren’t getting married on holiday weekends, so we get to spend those weekends doing whatever we want. We headed up to the Minocqua area to camp at Clear Lake. We encountered some hail on the way up.

20120709-205826.jpg
And a serious rainstorm.

20120709-205857.jpg
Since it was storming with lightning when we arrived at the campground, we couldn’t unpack the tent or cook dinner. Since I’m such a gourmet chef, I opened the box of wheat thins, pulled out a block of cheese from the cooler, and cracked open a couple wheat beers.

20120709-210132.jpg
We know how to keep it classy. This weekend was full of swimming, skinny dipping in broad daylight, paddling, missing our pups, fishing, lots of sleeping, reading, trail running, hammock-ing, and cooking over an open fire. We also got to meet up with Jen and Josh (and Jen’s parents) in a feat of amazing scheduling on two vacations (Thanks for meeting up with us, guys! We’re SO excited for your MKE wedding!). Here’s the weekend in photos…

We’re home safe and sound- and it took me a day to wash all the dishes, do all the laundry, and catch up on some photo work while recovering from the weekend. I hope you’re all doing well!

From Robyn and Rodney to Kari and Davin, and everything in-between.

Hi, friends:
I’m back and boy, am I in business! I’ll start with last weekend’s beautiful wedding of our Chicago couple, Robyn and Rodney.

20120702-185525.jpg

20120702-185534.jpg
Robyn wore incredible purple shoes!

20120702-185558.jpg
They had their flowers done by Inspired by Nature, LLC, and Fawn did a beautiful job.

20120702-185733.jpg
Rodney was overcome at the sight of his beautiful bride. πŸ™‚

20120702-185804.jpg

20120702-185815.jpg

20120702-185825.jpg
We stopped at her parents’ home for some photos…

20120702-185851.jpg

20120702-185901.jpg
…then headed to downtown Wausau!

20120702-185932.jpg

20120702-185938.jpg

20120702-185946.jpg
Their reception was at the Wausau Country Club, and the scenery was beautiful.

20120702-190027.jpg

20120702-190033.jpg

20120702-190041.jpg

20120702-190051.jpg
I’ve known Robyn since junior high school- we graduated together. A few of the girls from the class of 2003 were there!

20120702-190136.jpg

20120702-190153.jpg

20120702-190200.jpg
Thanks for including us in your day, R & R. You two had a beautiful wedding and a fabulous party!
We wore ourselves out at the wedding, but turned right around on Sunday and headed to the Fremont area for the Oberstadt Family Reunion, complete with plant checkers…

20120702-190405.jpg
…picnic tables (and good food!)…

20120702-190433.jpg
…and official business. Think “does everyone approve the minutes” kind of official.

20120702-190514.jpg
I officially took over as next year’s president. I have to plan the whole shindig! The ceremonious passing of the binder:

20120702-190605.jpg

20120702-190623.jpg
No Oberstadt party would be complete without farm cats!

20120702-190719.jpg

20120702-190727.jpg
I miss my I-subscribe-to-Cat-Fancy-and-volunteer-at-cat-show days.
I started off the week with a bunch of flowering chives in the garden. I put them in a jar with white vinegar, and it turned into delicious chive vinegar.
Before:

20120702-191025.jpg

20120702-191035.jpg
After:

20120702-191105.jpg
I went for my first real post-marathon run. A hot little 3.25er around my neighborhood. I noticed they’re doing a lot of work on the old Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia “house” next to the co-op. We had a lot of good times at a particular toga party in that house! There used to be a marimba on the second floor πŸ™‚

20120702-191341.jpg
No aches + no pains = happy Heidi!

20120702-191422.jpg
I spent a lot of time painting and cleaning this week. I love that we’re in the stages of home remodeling where I can have fun! I fixed up the old mirror that came with the house.

20120702-191544.jpg

20120702-191552.jpg
We also got the kitchen all painted and trim installed. Almost all of it, anyway. Yay!

20120702-191636.jpg
I picked a bunch of black raspberries and made cookies for small group, too. It was so hot, but I turned on the oven anyway.

20120702-191720.jpg
I rehearsed with Dale (hello, empty ballroom!)…

20120702-191755.jpg
…made a lot of salads and iced tea…

20120702-191825.jpg
…went on a pretty long bike ride (Kimmy, I was thinking about you a bunch!!)…

20120702-191901.jpg
…baked fresh black raspberry tarts…

20120702-191936.jpg
…and painted my fingernails for the fourth of July.

20120702-192006.jpg
My inlaws, Greg and Jayne, came in to town on Friday to celebrate a late Father’s Day. I made a delicious dinner and served those tarts. We went down to Riverfront Rendezvous to hear Here Come the Mummies. I had a ton of fun! πŸ™‚
I finished that week of fun just in time to prep for Kari and Davin’s Waupaca wedding. We met these two in college, and they are an absolutely perfect couple.

20120702-192113.jpg

20120702-192131.jpg

20120702-192143.jpg
They had a little problem with the aisle runner, but that happens all the time! It got a good laugh out of everyone.

20120702-192232.jpg

20120702-192240.jpg
The bride and groom are both musicians, and they had lots of musical friends and family there to help with the ceremony!

20120702-192313.jpg

20120702-192319.jpg

20120702-192325.jpg
It was a beautiful church on a beautiful day with a hot getaway car!

20120702-192350.jpg

20120702-192407.jpg
Their reception was at Smiley’s in Plover. What a beautiful floral backdrop for these outdoor photos!

20120702-192502.jpg
Their cake was so good that I ate two pieces. πŸ˜€

20120702-192604.jpg
Congratulations, Kari and Davin! πŸ™‚ We’re truly happy for you and wish you a lifetime of love.

20120702-192643.jpg
We spent Sunday at the lake for our annual 4th of July celebration, it was just a few days early.

20120702-192728.jpg
Mission lake is our spot, and I was accompanied by these two bathing beauties.

20120702-192757.jpg

20120702-192805.jpg
The key to a good lake trip lies in what’s packed in the car. A cooler, fun noodles, and lawn chairs? Perfect.

20120702-192909.jpg
After a long day of swimming, reading, swimming, napping, swimming, and laying around, we headed up to my mom’s house for dinner.

20120702-193006.jpg
I love seeing family and friends, and I really love spending time with my Grammy and Grampie. Grampie loves ribs, and so does his twin, Sam (the Newfie).

20120702-193111.jpg
They’re like two peas in a pod. I skipped the ribs but had all sorts of delicious stuff! My mom made a green salad and my favorite fruit salad.

20120702-193153.jpg
I made my seventh annual flag cake…

20120702-193215.jpg
…but it turned into upside down cake on my plate. Whoops.

20120702-193251.jpg
Have I mentioned that I adore my Grampie? He wins the award for most precious person ever. <;;3

20120702-193341.jpg
We raced home from dinner to hop in our yaks- I love watching fireworks from the water. I apologize in advance for how poorly this photo represents the experience, but I love fireworks too much to tinker with the camera at a time like this:

20120702-193448.jpg
I started my day with cracking open my last bag of coffee. I haven’t had to buy coffee in six years! I guess I do miss Starbucks. This is the good stuff!

20120702-193554.jpg
It’s so hot in our home today that I have been tempering my photo work with bike rides to clear my head and get some air.

20120702-193644.jpg
See you later, friends…

Recovery week means new tally marks!

I hated to break up the romance between the two sea yaks, but it was time. They’re going to attempt a long-distance relationship from Bill’s garage to our shed. Goodbye, Margarita.

20120622-171437.jpg
I got my fourth and fifth tally marks this week, for Madison Marathon and Grandma’s Marathon.

20120622-171723.jpg
I swear, inner foot tattoos hurt more than marathons themselves.

20120622-171804.jpg
I’ve been on an avocado kick this week- I’ve gone through an avocado a day. We’ve been eating lots of Mexican salads.

20120622-171938.jpg
It’s been so warm this week! Our little window air conditioner can hardly keep up. The real measure of how warm it is in our home is the state of my coconut oil. This week, it’s been mostly melted.

20120622-172111.jpg
Welcome to my temporary office.

20120622-172129.jpg
I’m staying on the first floor to escape the heat. I’ve had a few photo shoots this week but mostly I’ve been stuck inside doing administrative work. Oh, the joys of owning my own business! πŸ˜€ I’m really, truly blessed. I’m not complaining. In fact, here are a few photos from a shoot I did for a fishing guide service here in town. I love fishing-related photo shoots.

20120622-173305.jpg

20120622-173313.jpg
Yeah, this was my “office” view last night. I have nothing to complain about.

20120622-173345.jpg
The official start of summer was this week. I did a few sun salutations with my sore body in honor of the occasion. I also picked my first basil leaves for the year.

20120622-173448.jpg
Having my own garden is really wonderful. Special thanks to my Grammy, Grampie, and Mom for passing on the green thumb. I made delicious salads for dinner with ingredients fresh from the garden. Well, the Boca burgers are fresh from the freezer… πŸ™‚

20120622-173619.jpg
I’m off to finish getting ready for our wedding tomorrow- the lovely Robyn and Rodney.

20120622-174107.jpg

20120622-174112.jpg
I can’t wait for tomorrow! It will be a beautiful wedding, I just know it.

Strawberries, weddings, and bugs.

Hi, friends. πŸ™‚
Taper week is once again upon us.
This weekend was a busy one! On Friday, I met with a new client to discuss details about a photo gig. I’ll post more once I have everything set in stone- but here’s a preview of my new subjects…

20120612-144413.jpg
Brian and I wanted to celebrate my newest gig opportunity, so we went to Matsu Ya. I love sushi!

20120612-144504.jpg
We headed out to New London Friday night. Since our Saturday wedding was in the Fox Cities, we took the pups to my mother-in-law’s to run to their heart’s content! Abbie has recently taken up sleeping on our shoes. Brian’s nasty work boots and my well-worn Chacos?

20120612-144727.jpg
Brian woke up early with me and we went for a little run on Saturday morning. My hamstrings have been incredibly painfully tight for the last few days. I was hoping a short run and good stretch would help.

(For the record, it only helped a little bit. I’m currently trying not to panic.)

On the way to the salon, my car rolled across the big 140,000.

20120612-144814.jpg
I made my last car payment this month, too… So that probably means my car is going to start falling apart. :-/
We had a wonderfully warm and sunny day for Katie and Ryan’s wedding. πŸ™‚ Here’s a quick recap of the day through our lenses…

20120612-145021.jpg
Congratulations, Katie and Ryan! We had so much fun with you!
Sunday brought an amazing day. We went to Appleton to go to church at Appleton Alliance with Jean, then we ran some errands. I got some pink and lime green maribou! I’ve got some flies that are just waiting to be tied with that pretty stuff. I also picked up a book for small group- Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. After errands, we went strawberry picking! I haven’t been berry picking in 10 years or so. The last time I went, my mom and I made a storyboard from berry picking through cleaning and making strawberry jam. I kept thinking about how fun it was! We went to a place near Appleton that Brian’s family has been going for years- and I found Todd!

20120612-145616.jpg
I didn’t know he worked there. What an awesome surprise! His fiancΓ©e, Hannah, works there, too. πŸ™‚ Here is our berry picking extravaganza…

“Strawberry fields forever…”

20120612-145840.jpg
Thanks, Cuff Farms… We were the last people out picking for the afternoon. πŸ™‚
Packing up the car was quite an extravaganza- with all of our photo gear, overnight bags, and the dogs… Our trunk was packed to the gills!

20120612-150006.jpg
We also discovered that we must have been driving through some pretty buggy areas- my rack is covered!!

20120612-150036.jpg
Monday brought unpacking, photo editing (SO MANY PHOTOS!), and processing some of those berries. I made my first ever batch of strawberry jam by myself!

20120612-150128.jpg
I wasn’t sure if it would turn out because I didn’t use as much sugar as the recipe calls for- but it’s perfect. Seriously delicious! πŸ™‚ I’m so proud. I didn’t know that when you can anything, the jars make little popping sounds when they seal! How cute. πŸ™‚
I’m off to finish some photos before Brian comes home. I’m planning on logging a few miles tonight in the cooler weather. πŸ™‚

Miles this year: 333.5

P.S. Here’s something to think about.

How many photos can I shoot in one week?

I have had a wonderful reverse taper week. It was filled with relaxing workouts…

20120604-210011.jpg
…a graduation party for a friend (Congratulations, Jenna!!!)…

20120604-210044.jpg
…and so much more. I am suffering from a post- marathon cold, so I’ve been drinking a lot of tea, sitting in the sauna, and eating a lot of garlic. Sorry, Brian!
On Thursday, we headed out east of town with a few of my TU friends to check out the stream restoration projects that our chapter has in the works on the Tomorrow River. Our future president brought his little girl along for her first kayak ride. πŸ™‚

20120604-210346.jpg

20120604-210406.jpg

20120604-210421.jpg
After that, we headed over to a little lake for some fishing. πŸ™‚

20120604-210552.jpg

After that long day, Brian crashed pretty hard. My cold was bothering me, so we were both happy to be home.

20120604-210635.jpg
I logged a few slow miles this week, and one of the highlights was finding a little duck couple in my neighbor’s yard. πŸ™‚

20120604-210940.jpg
Our weekend was filled with quite a bit of excitement. It started Friday night, with a Zumbathon. This was quite a fun gig! Check out the content of the dance party…

I came home from that photo shoot and worked on packing my equipment for the Northwoods. We woke up Saturday morning, packed up the car, and headed to where the freeway ends.

20120604-211633.jpg
We had the incredible opportunity to shoot Kyt and Nick’s wedding up near the Michigan border. I’ve known Kyt for almost two decades, and it was wonderful to spend the day with her and see our friends all in one place!

Many congratulations to Kyt and Nick! It was wonderful to see your family again, and of course- our friends from Riverside Elementary, DCE Jr and Sr High, and UWSP. πŸ™‚
Brian and I drove south to Minocqua to spend the night, and we enjoyed our Sunday together. I went for a run on the Hiawatha trail.

20120604-212108.jpg
Historical and beautiful- it was the perfect way to shake out on a vacation-y morning.

20120604-212148.jpg

20120604-212157.jpg
After a quick shower and stop for coffee, we walked around downtown and stopped at a craft show at Torpe park. We bought candy at Dan’s…

20120604-212323.jpg
…gummy candy is my favorite! I especially love those “fruit” slices.
We went to lunch at an awesome BBQ joint.

20120604-212411.jpg
It’s one block off the main drag, and worth every penny. The food was good, the people were good, and the ambiance was awesome. I love anything served to me on butcher paper πŸ™‚

20120604-212514.jpg
After that awesome meal, we headed out for a couple hours of paddling/fishing/swimming.

20120604-212601.jpg

20120604-212608.jpg
Look, Mom… I can touch my head to my deck!

Balancing on top of a kayak like mine is harder than it looks- right side up OR upside down!

20120604-212731.jpg

20120604-212737.jpg
We got on the road just in time to catch some of the “returning home” traffic. We were in a hurry to get back for Mary and Joe’s engagement portraits! Brian and I went to college with Mary. She’s our DO sister! Congratulations, friends. πŸ˜€ I tried to capture a little of Joe’s personality in my shots. Can you tell?

20120604-212931.jpg

20120604-212937.jpg

20120604-212942.jpg

20120604-212948.jpg
After a full day of fresh air, we crashed hard. I only woke up in the night to scratch my 863684894789354636793 mosquito bites. I must have had high blood sugar after all those gummy candies. Whoops.
I’ll have to fill you in on today later. πŸ™‚ I had a lot of photo editing, cleaning and unpacking, router shopping, and some adorable family portraits. Whew! I’m off to bed.

Three words: fly. fishing. school.

I had the most amazing weekend!
On Friday afternoon, Brian and I hopped on our bikes to take Abbie out for a run. It was pretty warm outside, but we knew we wouldn’t be around as much this weekend, and we wanted her to get some exercise. We took her for a few miles, but when she started panting pretty hard, I scooped her up and put her in my basket.

20120520-193028.jpg
She’s way too cute. πŸ™‚
After our bike ride, we loaded our boats and headed over to lake Emily for a quick paddle. The weather was beautiful!
20120520-185134.jpg

20120520-185140.jpg
We paddled in, loaded up, and tossed on a second layer just in time to start the main weekend event: Fly Fishing School!!
We started on Friday night with knot tying. I learned the surgeon’s knot and loop, blood knot, cinch and improved cinch knot, and the handshake.

20120520-193141.jpg
After a bunch of time with knots and some great stories, we headed home.
I woke up early on Saturday to go for a run with two strangers. Well, technically, they weren’t total strangers… I met them through my friend, Sarah Cooke. She graduated on Saturday (congratulations, girl!), and her family came to witness and celebrate her accomplishment. Enter the Cooke brothers- Andrew and Morgan. I took them out on the Green Circle for a relaxed 4.5 miler before school. Thanks for the run, guys! It was great to meet up in real life! πŸ™‚

20120520-185820.jpg
I made it home with exactly enough time to shower and head out to day two of fly fishing school. Brian may have shut my brand new rod in the door and broke both pieces. I may have cried on the way to school. I may have made him tell everyone what happened to the rod they gave me.
We learned about the gear…

20120520-185926.jpg
Watched some fancy casting…

20120520-185949.jpg
And learned to cast on our own!

20120520-190009.jpg
I was having a lot of fun πŸ™‚

The school is held at the Riverside Bible Camp, along the Tomorrow River in Amherst. It is a BEAUTIFUL location!

20120520-190113.jpg
There was lots of wildlife, too!

They cooked us delicious meals (burgers, pasta, pizza, breakfast sandwiches, cinnamon rolls, lots of fruit…), and after dinner, we started fly tying. I forgot to take photos of my flies, but you bet your bottom dollar that mine have fancy pink tails, glittery bodies, and silvery segments. πŸ™‚ I made up my own patterns with colors that I’m sure will grab the little fishes’ attention.

After a bonfire and the drive home, Brian and I crashed pretty hard. I peeled myself out of bed this morning, tired but very excited to actually go fishing today!
I ate breakfast at school, then did a half hour of yoga on the footbridge that crosses the river. It was a great practice the morning- I had fresh air blowing in my hair and the sound of running water in my ears. As soon as I rolled up my mat, we started a session that covers what TU does as far as stream restoration.

We followed the work project discussion with casting review and a few casting games.

20120520-191451.jpg
I made a cameo in Brian’s sunglasses!

After lunch (with WATERMELON!!!), we got everyone together…

20120520-191610.jpg
…then split up into fishing groups. Brian and I went with Wyatt to these secret little ponds, and I caught my first brook trout!

20120520-191658.jpg
I didn’t want to touch him, he was so beautiful with these pink and orange polka dots and a pretty sorbet orange tummy. Don’t worry, I caught two more! They were practically little babies, but I didn’t care. They’re soooooo cute!

20120520-191753.jpg
Wyatt stayed out with Brian and I for a few hours.

20120520-191818.jpg
Special thanks to Wyatt for helping me with everything- from tying on my fly to untangling my line to helping me cast in the wind to correcting my casting form to taking the hook out of the cute fishes’ mouths.

20120520-191922.jpg
We came home, searched for ticks, played with our pups, showered… And now I’m back to normal Heidi life, with a giant salad and Burn Notice.

20120520-192017.jpg
We even stopped at Cellar 70 on the way home and picked up some Two Hearted to celebrate our accomplishments today!

20120520-192108.jpg
Look at the little brookies on that case! πŸ™‚
Brian is already snoring on the couch, so I better get us ready for bed.
Thanks, Frank Hornberg chapter guys- you’re a group of amazing men and I’m so blessed that you’re sharing your knowledge and experience with me!
Watch out, world… I’m a superb fly fisher-woman in the making! πŸ™‚

The best mom ever and enjoying the weather. AND cute kids!

Happy belated Mother’s day, Mom! I love you!

20120518-152048.jpg
My mom and I spent some time together this week- we got pedicures, went to lunch, and did some shopping.

20120518-152208.jpg
Thanks to everyone for weighing in on my last post. It’s hard to keep a clear perspective on issues like that when it’s easy to put up defenses. As a plus, I’m pretty sure that when I’m ready to race, I’ll no longer be “overweight.” A few pounds really can make a difference. Just ask your knees!
For every pound a person loses, they reduce the pressure on their knees by FOUR POUNDS!
I’m starting to taper for Madison Marathon, so I’ve got the taper shakes… A.K.A. I haven’t been running as much, so I’ve got energy through the roof! πŸ™‚
I decided to dust off my old K2s for a few miles.

20120518-152441.jpg
Brian and I took my dirty Stratus through the car wash this week. I’m such a rule breaker… I turned my wipers on, even though the signs say not to. πŸ™‚

20120518-152750.jpg
My friend, Jessie, and I headed over to Amherst for a play date/photo shoot with our barista-friend, Genna- and her new baby, Arlo! Arlo has a big brother, and Jessie has two little girls, so it was a fun time, all around!

What cuties! πŸ™‚ I have a bad case of baby fever.
After my photo shoot, I went for a run with Justin on the Moses Creek section of the Green Circle. During our run, I found out it was his birthday!

20120518-153400.jpg
Happy birthday, Justin. πŸ™‚ I took him over to O’so to celebrate!
After a delicious spinach salad with Brian, we went for a bike ride. He showed me the work he’s been doing now- they’re getting rid of the crazy frontage road along division, and putting in a stoplight near Kmart. It will be much safer when they’re finished! Brian was working on the electrical for the street lights.

Really cool stuff. On the way home, we were cruising around the neighborhood and found this awesome road art.

20120518-153825.jpg
Stevens Point road crews get bonus points for that one. It’s not often that my tax dollars make me smile randomly! πŸ™‚
I spent the majority of my morning today working on non-shooting photo work. I made up for all that indoor time by working in the garden. I have so many weeds in there! I planted my mom’s rhubarb (thanks, Mom! It looks happy!), and I have some perennials in there- parsley, chives, and three kinds of mint.

20120518-154008.jpg
I still have a lot of weeding to do, but I’m getting anxious to plant! I love spending time in there, weeding, singing, and harvesting. I think I inherited my Gram’ and Gramps’ green thumb!
It’s time to enjoy some mint lemonade and get things ready for kayaking tonight and fly fishing school this weekend! πŸ™‚
